  1. I've had the automated billing thingy not renew me a couple of times causing membership to lapse for a day or two until I noticed and manually renewed. Alas, no charter membership for me.
  2. I'm looking for a WI cacher for the Brookfield Cache exchange GC4Y12Q and GC48EKJ
  3. I was just wondering if it was worth a trip into the city today to see it.
  4. I just saw 2 twitter posts mentioning one of the Darpa balloons in NYC. One mentioned 342 E 56th St. These are probably false reports, but if I were picking 10 places in the US and wanted maximum potential visibility I'd pick the NYC region. Any one in the city that confirm?
  5. Try tweezers. I often use the tiny tweezers that are in my Swiss army knife.
  6. I live about 30 miles north of NYC, so there are plenty of parks and preserves where full size caches can be hidden near home. The first page of caches near my home has 20 caches within 2 miles: Traditional 11 Puzzle 7 Multi 2 None of these are micros, 6 are listed as small, and 14 as regular (5 of them are mine). Looking at the nearest 100 caches (within 6.6 miles of home): Micro = 6 Small = 18 Regular = 75 Virtual = 1 So there are only 6% micros, but the first one didn't show up until 2006, followed by 3 more in 2007. Number of caches by year hidden. 2000 - 2 2001 - 6 2002 - 4 2003 - 7 2004 - 8 2005 - 14 2006 - 18 2007 - 32 2008 - 9 A few older caches have been archived, but not that many, so we've definitely seen an increase in caches in the last couple of years, with maybe 10% micros cropping up.
  7. I was using Safari, didn't try Firefox. I was able to post my log using the "mobile" interface http://wap.geocaching.com/
  8. I'm finding the same problem. I also get timeout when clicking on cacher names, but the cache pages are displaying fine.
  9. Here's our signature mumu fish http://www.anadromous.net/geotokens/
  10. I decided to scan along the Harlem Line (with which I'm most familiar) and see what potential caches might be reachable from some of the stations. Some of these distances might be too far for a child, but could be of interest to others. I've also made a couple of suggestions where a 1-2 mile cab ride from a train station could access a particularly nice park. ------------------------------------------------- Going north on the Harlem line beginning with Tuckahoe. Tuckahoe Station 1 Depot Square (Main Street at Oak Avenue) Tuckahoe, NY, 10707 GC1CVF0 - Where I Walk Tuckahoe It's approximately 0.3 miles from the station to the start of this nice loop multi walk along the Bronx River Pky. Total distance around the loop is less than a mile. GC19E2J - Sophia This cache is located approximately 0.5 miles north from the start/end point of WIWT mentioned above. Quick cache in a park. GC120QW - Malcolm Wilson Micro This one looks close to Sophia, but they have a river between them. There might be a bridge or other pedestrian way to get there, but it might be tricky. GC18K0Z - Paladin Quest Purple This one is 0.6 miles from station for an urban nano. Might be worthwhile if you need to search for food after caching. ------------------------------------------------- Scarsdale Station 1 Depot Place Scarsdale, NY, 10583 GC1AGQF - Secret History of the Mongols A short walk along the Bronx river Pky, start is near the station. GC19HHG - Paladin Quest Gray An urban nano not far away. ------------------------------------------------- White Plains Station 16 Ferris Avenue White Plains, NY, 10601 GC1AQ3R - Bronx River Trail North #1 A very short distance north of the train station. GC1AQ4W - Bronx River Trail North #2 This is approximately 1 mile further along the trail from BRT #1. It's a pleasant walk on a paved trail - this cache is also near the North White Plains station, so it would be possible to start there, do the walk south to White Plains, pick up as many micros in White Plains as you wanted and then return to the city from White Plains Station without backtracking to North White Plains. Note that the GC158AX - White Plains TB cache that appears to be between BRT#1 & BRT#2 is on the wrong side of the tracks, and access to it would require entering the cemetery from the busy street, Rte 22 (north Broadway). There are several micros easily accessible from the White Plains Station, they're a varied bunch and I've listed them in order of my preference. GC18JCK - Jacob Purdy's Treehouse GC125RX - KOE GC1B2TD - Best Spots in White Plains GC17Q5N - Psych Experiment GC11WK8 - 1 hr Parking GC12BWQ - Skyview These two multis: GC12CM4 - Guns of Navarone GC2EBF - Where's George both start near the train station, but end up about 3 miles away in Silver Lake Park, they are both well worth doing, but require some effort, quite a bit of walking, and the park can be pretty buggy in summer. ----------------------------------------------------------- Pleasantville Station 400 Manville Road & 1 Wheeler Avenue Pleasantville, NY, 10570 No caches are located very near this station, however, the entrance to Graham Hills county park is approx. 1.5 miles west along Rte 117. This large park has at least six caches, the entrance is near GCVPQH - Jigsaw #1 If you like puzzles, the 4 Jigsaw puzzle caches are a great set. Graham hills is a bike park and has winding narrow trails, good tree cover for shade in summer and I enjoy spending time hiking there. Another 0.25 mile further along Rte 117 is the entrance to the Pocantico Hills. GCVCGB - Vexing Puzzle initial coords are parking coords and entrance to the trails can be found there. Depending on how far you wanted to hike, you could pick up 6-7 caches with a 2 mile loop, or another 6 or so caches if you wanted to up the distance. Walking here is mostly along wide gravel carriage trails. Another beautiful tree lined park. Great for a day outing. While the walk from the train station to the entrance wouldn't be enjoyable, I'm sure one could call a cab and then call another one to pick you up when your hiking is complete. ----------------------------------------------------------- Mount Kisco Station 1 Kirby Plaza Mount Kisco GC1AX77 - Computer Code Breaker GCQV81 - Don't Choke Both of these are located in Choate Sanctuary, approximately 1 mile east from the Mt Kisco station. Taxis are available at Mt Kisco to cover the distance along Rte 133 to sanctuary since much of the road is without sidewalks. GCQQBZ - A Chief Intersection A simple cache near a monument not too far from the station (it may currently be disabled). ----------------------------------------------------------- And that's about it, scanning the rest of track to Brewster, there are a couple more isolated caches near Purdy's and Golden's Bridge, but nothing worth making a long train trip for.
  11. Thought this might be of interest to local geocachers. The Saw Mill River Audubon is having an introduction to geocaching program at the Chappaqua (NY) library on May 18. While it's meant to introduce newbies to the hobby, they also would like some experienced cachers on hand to share their experiences. A link to the Audubon website with more details is below. http://www.sawmillriveraudubon.org/PublicPrograms.html#May
  12. We've done two urban challenges, one in San Francisco and the other in San Diego. It's a lot of fun, but much more under pressure racing to find checkpoints than just geocaching. While only two people can be the "official team" you are actually allowed to have as many "ground support" or "groupies" or whatever you want to call your friends that tag along participate with you. For San Diego, we had a bunch of people split the entry fee and did it as a big group. The gory details are available on our web page for anyone interested. http://www.thesalmons.org/john/urbanchallenge/sandiego.html
  13. I could swing by around lunch time, but probably can't make it in the morning or evening. For great views of the Hollywood sign I recommend the Hollywood Reservoir cache (GC4115). Print out the street map of the local area where the streets get twisty-turny, but it's not that hard to get to. DruMorgan also has a cache involving the Stars Walk of Fame. If it's something you'll be doing anyway as a tourist, you can find a bunch of stars that will lead you to an offset cache. Best of luck, and feel free to drop me a line if you want to know about any caches up in the Pasadena area.
  14. I'll pick May 17 because it will be our 20th wedding aniversary as well.
