  1. I've just read the thread about team members relogging caches under new names. Round these parts we seem to have several cachers who have dual identities. I know the background to one of those which is fine (no names mentioned) but it does seem odd when you know one person is logging the same find under 2 names at the same time. Is this common? Is it just me who thinks it's weird?
  2. Try Plane Sailing (GCWM7J). On Haldon Moor, but you get good views of Dartmoor from there so hopefully this will do the trick! MJ
  3. I hope the guy at Birmingham City Council we're trying to get approval from for some new caches linked to a forthcoming event doesn't read this thread
  4. Thanks ZL. I've been looking for a decent financial adviser to invest my fortune ever since!
  5. Fantastic site! I have a whole series of caches dedicated to unfortunate street names and will be including this link on the listing pages sometime soon. As a couple of the names picked up from the site from my postcode are street names (notably Butthole Lane!), I'm surprised some of the ones in my set aren't on there too viz - Pestilence Dogpool Poverty Coldbath Grimpits World's End and ... the mystery bonus [no can tell]
  6. On several of my caches, the hint is deliberately cryptic (and normally described as such). One went "For Pete's sake! What's in a name?". Many finders said they hadn't any idea what the hint was about, even after I explained it to them! I don't think it's that difficult, but there again I do crosswords. That hide was trashed so there's now a new hide and (cryptic) hint
  7. Good - but how? (Sorry if this is a bit dim!)
  8. I have an idea for a cache which would involve me needing to know the cache's waypoint reference before I create the cache. I don't need the waypoint to contain particular letters / numbers; I just need to know what they are before I start! Can this be done? MJ
  9. Option 1 is exactly what I did, including pasting in the text of the original log. All sorted out amicably.
  10. As cache owner I know I can delete a log (never have) but can I delete a photo attached to a log leaving the log itself alone? I'm not sure that I can. On the log in question, the log itself is fine but the photo is near enough a give away spoiler (I've asked for no spoilers!). I thnik the photo was added later but I have 10 people watching this cache so would prefer to remove it before they notice; I'd like the cache to be enjoyed /suffered as I intended! I've asked for the photo to be removed but it's quite possible the cacher involved has not seen that email just yet. Thoughts welcome... MJ
  11. I'd be interested for 7pm on 28th. Like Balders, I wouldn't want to miss it before it goes! MJ
  12. I recently bagged an urban nano FTF by bike looking like this! http://www.foska.com/cgi-bin/emalbum/emAlb...;img=1&tn=1
  13. I was amused to see this headline in today's Metro as I munched my sarnie... Coleman bitten by travel bug Disappointingly, the story was about Fulham FC's form away from home and not some rabid furry thing with a dog tag! Any other examples of this sort of caching headline?
  14. Many weather beaten cachers have failed to find what theMaiden in Distress has lost. It's definitely a "puzzle in the field" type cache but nobody's described it as evil yet as far as I can remember. You've done it ZL, what do you think?!
  15. Yes it does. It can be argued that by putting a disclaimer on your cache page you are acknowledging that there could be a circumstance where there MAY be risk. If you don't think there could be risk, then why put the disclaimer on the page? It's horses for courses. The geocaching.com discliamer (for what it's worth) makes it clear that there generally are risks involved in caching. Some of my caches are low / no risk. Others do involve the risks we all (obviously) accept and probably enjoy as part of our caching day out. But there are nutters out there. I deal with them at work. If I'm the unlucky UK cache setter targetted by a nutter, I might yet be glad of my disclaimer.
  16. This could fast become a law degree exam question. Seems to me that the Groundspeak disclaimer protects Groundspeak and it's at best ambiguous as to whether cache setters are protected. If it worked, why is one of our UK bretheren in a spot of bother? I imagine these sort of cases have been brought in the US. Does anyone know what the outcome of those cases has been? [Another interesting exam question - The Groundspeak disclaimer is designed for (and possibly subject to?) US law. If a UK cacher sues a UK cache setter for loss / injury etc, would US or UK law apply to arguments about the disclaimer?] Anyway, if there's any doubt (and there seems to be), why should cache setters cop it if something goes wrong? I've stuck my disclaimer on all 15 of my caches (including temproarily disabled ones which need some re-engineering). I don't think it can hurt. It'll be interesting to see if anyone mentions it in the logs.
  17. Recent threads have touched on possible legal risks associated with cache placing. Someone has mentioned that there is a general geocaching.com or Groundspeak disclaimer but I'm not sure I know where to find it. In the absence of that, I've drafted my own which would go at the top of all my listing pages: "Before we begin, read this – DISCLAIMER : You do not have to seek this cache. If you seek it, whether or not you find it and whether or not you log your efforts on www.geocaching.com, you agree to do so entirely at your own risk whether physical or otherwise and whether as to yourself, members of your party (particularly minors), third parties or public or private property (your’s or anyone else’s). Sorry about that. Here we go…" Couple of questions: a) Should I? Does it work? c) Would this stop you doing my caches? All thoughts gratefully recieved. MJ
  18. This is my log from Le Barrage, near Bergerac in France of 26 July: "This cache represents a few firsts for me. It's my first cahce outside the UK; the first tiume I've written a log in a foreign language my first cache with East co-ordinates; and the first time I've met a snake at a cache location!!! I enjoyed the walk on a sultry afternoon and found the cache easily. I left The County Air ambulance TB and although my log says I took nothing I actually had to take something out to get the TB to fit in! TFTC . MJ" It wasn't a particularly big snake but as the cache was hidden under roots in a steep bank we were pretty much eye to eye for a few seconds. Then he just slithered off. Mrs MJ freaked when I told her (some things are better left unsaid!)
  19. I was FTF on a suburban Brum micro recently ("Stationary Stash"). I was just replacing the cache when Wisewol came trotting round the corner, GPSr in hand. He is the first and only cacher I've met. We had a chat and he mentioned how he often went FTF-ing in the dead of night with a big torch. About a week later, I had a new set published at midnight. By 3am he had 4 FTFs (and missed a 5th owing to an error by me ). Next day he found the rest and FTF'd the Bonus. All in all a fair trade for pipping him to a micro! What's the crack with these event caches? Who organises them? Has there ever been one in Brum? MJ
  20. Thanks for all your thoughts. The consensus seems to be that this is a pain in the a*se or a bit pointless so I have instead simply uploaded images to the cache pages for anyone who cares to click on them.
  21. How do I get the background image to change on a cache page? With my avatar (left) it was simple enough. I clicked the relevant box, navigated my folders, selected the right one and bingo! there it was. To do this I click in the "background image URL" box and .... ummmm... then what?
  22. I am so gobsmacked that I simply have to explain my dismay! I commute to work by bike. I noticed that a new cache had gone up in Harborne overnight (Grove Park - sorry, haven't worked out how to do those link things yet) and though it was a bit out of my way I decided to have a go and, stone the crows, I got it! Very well hidden it was too! It wasn't til I logged it that I saw that someone else had been there and DNf'd (it wasn't clear who was there first). About 5pm I get an email at work and there's another new cache 1.4 miles from my home co-ords (Stationary Stash). I don't manage to leave until just gone 6.25pm and don't rate my chances knowing the local (no doubt car bound) FTF brigade. Anyway, after enduring the traffic and hammering the pedals where possible, jsut gone 7pm I got it. Gobsmacked I was - 2 FTFs in one day - by bike!! These are only my 2nd and 3rd FTFs so really quite special, and all for just 8 miles extra cycling. The thrid first was meeting another cacher (other than online) for the first time. I was just putting the latter cache back when he came jogging round the corner with GPSr in hand. We had a nice chat and compared notes. All in all a special caching day!
  23. Funny this. I had thought of doing some MM caches at some of the junctions involved myself (and thanked the owner for saving me a job!)). Anyways, I've set about doing this particular MM set by bike. 7 down; 5 to go. Quite fun really. Not that I need much encouragement to go out on my bike. But I enjoy doing this quintessentially petrol headed 4 wheel set under my own steam . As with lots of MM caches, they're all 35mm film can micros. (I did get a micro coin out of one of them though! ). Personally I like micros but as a set of 12 I think this warrants a bonus cache of some sort.
