  1. I recently updated to 4.60 on my 62S. I just noticed now that Photo Viewer had disappeared, and there were (2) Adventures on the main menu. Since Photo Viewer allows me to load geotaggged photos and navigate to them, I went back to 4.50. Comments? Thanks in advance
  2. I was recently updating my software (62S) when I saw under additional optional software a "Time Zone Map". Downloaded it ok, but I can't find it anywhere. Is this merely an "internal" source code used for the usual purposes, or it it something that I can view? If so, how? Thanks in advance!
  3. My starter model was a 60C with an older chipset. The 62S that I have now completely outclasses it as far as lock up time and accuracy. Here's the main thing: Although these models look the same externally, the user interface is different and it may take some time to relearn with the new unit. Also, some things you might habitually do with your 60 you may find harder on the 62. Garmin, apparently, started off with a brand new team to write the software on the 62, and there was zip zero nada thought of carrying over the old features of the 60 series. (After all, it had been some time, maybe the original programmers were dead...) This has, mercifully, been somewhat remedied with software upgrades, but a 60 user should be made aware that the 60 and 62 are different animals that just happen to look the same on the outside. Strong point: You can see your maps, waypoints, custom symbols, etc, right there on the Windows directory structure and cut, paste, delete to your hearts content. Easy to add data! Bottom line: 62S=Best in Class (Learning curve required)
  4. Depends on what unit your daughter has. Garmin DK,OR,62s,78,Etrex 10/20/30, and Montana will take maps in the format you have them on your 62s. Garmin 60CSX, Older Etrex, 76CSX, etc. will only take a single gmapsupp.img file, so if you have multiple files on your 62s you'll need to send them as a single gmapsupp.img in MapSource. As savant9 said trying to send a locked file like CNNANT to the wrong unit can spoil your day. And of course it won't work unless her unit's a Garmin. Also, FWIW, MapSource is a viewer, not a compiler. cgpsmapper and mkgmap are compilers. I see your point--maybe compile is the wrong word. In Mapsource, I select the maps, name the mapset, Mapsource does its "building mapset" routine and sends it to the unit as a gmapsupp.img file, which I later rename. What is the correct term for this? Thanks for the info, guys, and yes her unit is a Garmin.
  5. I have a 62S with a LOT of maps that I compiled with mapsource. Now that they are on the unit, can I copy all of them (in Windows Explorer) and then paste them to the same directory on a different unit? I ask because the 62 is the only GPS I currently own, so I can't verify this myself. I'm wondering if I can transfer some of my maps to my daughter's unit by this method, when we go on vacation. Thanks!
  6. Awesome! This is something I've really missed since I destroyed my 60CSx. Yes I know about the new "filters" but symbol filtering seems so much easier. I concur! I have the location of the nearest ham repeaters on the GPS; just sort by the transmitter symbol and there they all are, showing distance and direction. USEABLE!
  7. Petro-gel for all O-rings all the time. Find it here: http://www.amazon.com/Petrol-Gel-Sanitary-Lubricant-4-oz/dp/B0015ZQ5MQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324242996&sr=8-1
  8. Actually that page is wrong. Partial track archiving has always been broken on Colorados. You need to edit the track off of the GPS and save it back to the unit. The 62S has the same limitation, as far as I can tell. If I turn the GPS on right now, and want to walk this trail in front of me, and then save it when I get to the end, there ain't no way to save a partial track on the unit. Maybe someday, sometime, when I get back to the computer I can tediously find the start point and end point, if I can remember, and waste an hour reconstructing something that should have been there originally... What a pain! What a loss of functionality!
  9. I'm headed out on a trip with the 62S. I usually clear the track log when I start, then download the whole trip to Mapsource when I get home for reference. When I'm "out there", I plan to walk some trails. I want to save these trails as separate tracks, like "Maidenhead Trail", etc. How can I best do this on the unit? Archive everything before I start walking the trail, then save the track when I'm done? Here's the glitch: Track Manager=>Current Track=>Save Portion seems completely nonfunctional. If I try, it prompts me to choose a start point, which is one single point only. Then prompt, choose an end point, which is the SAME single point. What's up? In the past I've copied the whole trip to Mapsource and edited out and saved the trails, but it's a pain. What's the correct finesse? THANK YOU in advance.
  10. Here ya' go: LINK I, too, just got a new picture viewer via 3.60. Great to have people support here to get up to speed fast. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
  11. I'm a satisfied user. Trek and Garmin are a good fit. I use 9/16" webbing as a lanyard and wrap that around the handlebars as extra security, but it's overkill.
  12. If I find a far away port on my 62s, say, Dunedin, NZ, and hit go to; will the course be a rhumb line or a great circle path? If you can answer, what is your reasoning? THANKS!
  13. I changed batteries in the 62S the other day and something really weird happened--on the map screen all roads, topo contours, and pois had disappeared! It took a bit of thought (some may say "staring stupidly off into space") before it came to me. The Marine setting had been changed to "fishing". Selecting "nautical" brought the unit back to what is my usual state. One interesting thing: Loading a profile would not change this setting. The unit was determined to go fishing! I have my profiles backed up on the laptop, but restoring them wouldn't have helped. The Marine setting seems to be global and not saved in a profile. My point here is, if I want to restore the unit to my settings, are there other global values that are not profile dependent? If I have trouble, I would need to load my profile, AND go through a checklist of such values to be sure it was what I wanted. Any ideas? Thanks!
  14. Sure, you can have as many as you want. But each time you add send a map to the unit, rename it. I left gmapsupp.img on the GPS as the original Garmin Basemap that came with the unit. All my other maps are loaded onto my SD card and renamed appropriately.
  15. On the 62S: Track Manager>[Any Saved Track]>Copy Reversed What does this function do and what uses can you put it to? Thanks in advance!
  16. Another consideration: Basecamp requires Microsoft .Net framework 3.5 SP1, about a bloated 220 MB. Basecamp adds another 100 megs (if I remember right). Close to half a gig when you're done. If you're running XP on your older laptop, .net framework WILL lengthen boot time, and the whole smash might take up a huge chunk of what available space is left on your hard drive. Mapsource does the same with far less computer resources. My 2 cents.
  17. I has the same problem downloading archived tracks: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=277750 I'm using version 3.00. I may try to go back to 2.80 and see if the problem disappears. Seems something has changed recently.
  18. I can only assume you're not checking the waypoint box on the import dialog. Tracks/Routes/Waypoints can all be checked or not. I doubt you need BaseCamp, but Copy/Paste should work for waypoints if all else fails. Well, yeah, when I check waypoints I get a dialog box that says there are no waypoints found on this device. I can only assume the operator reports the problem accurately. Yes, I can copy/paste.
  19. Open two sessions of MapSource. Use one for opening, the second for collecting and editing. Copy/Paste the tracks from opening to collecting. When finished, save as either GPX or GDB, both will save as many tracks as you care to have in one file. All the tracks must have unique names. That's the workaround I needed! All OK now, but one minor issue--Mapsource does not see any waypoints on the GPS. I found them in the GPX file on the 62, and loaded them as you described above. Trip is now "in the vault", but it would be nice to know why the waypoints aren't being found by Mapsource. THANKS!
  20. MapSource, of course. Oops! I can find all the tracks in the Archive file, and I've copied them to a new folder on my computer. If I try to open them with MapSource, it will only let me open one GPX file at a time. Kind of useless. What's wrong?
  21. Hello All: I just returned from a long trip out west. Normally I clear the track log before a trip and then save the track and any waypoints as a GPX file when I get home, labeling it "July2011trip.gpx" or some such. This time I find, that because the trip was about 2 weeks, much of the track has been archived. It's all there, I can scroll through the list of archived tracks on the 62s and find it all. The problem: When I connect to Mapquest to download it, Mapquest only sees the current track. I've fiddled with no success. How do I download the archived tracks so I can reconstruct the entire trip? Thanks in advance. NA0G
  22. Thanks guys. Bad procedure on my part: Loaded software 3.00 and didn't check to see if my custom profile had changed. It seems that some settings are not what I remember. In the future, I'll save the profile (another thread) before any updating and make sure it gets reloaded after the software change. NA0G
  23. I use my 62S mostly on the bicycle. I've noticed lately that sometimes when I scroll the map view in to say 800 ft, I'll look down again after a mile or so and the view has popped back out to 1.2 miles. Very unhandy to have to take eyes and hand off the road to push the "in" button again. What am I doing wrong and how can I make the setting stay where I want it? Thanks NA0G
