Temporary Maps available for Garmin?
SandyGarrity replied to Mushtang's topic in GPS technology and devices
We have some really great maps in the UK please see http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/ that can be used with any GPS and be a lot cheaper than the software and give you a permant momento of your visit to London. -
What would you buy and why?
SandyGarrity replied to carolnbarney's topic in GPS technology and devices
The first question you need to ask is WHY do I need this? Once you have that one sorted out then you can start your quest. As a Mountain Navigator the GARMIN 60MAPCXs was the natural choice. I get a map to compair with the really good maps the UK Ordance Survey provide and I get a second compass and altimiter. -
No, it's a really BAD idea I bow to your greater knowledge of electronics. I am only a humble Network Engineer.
-
But it is a really good idea! Could somebody suggest it to Garmin!?

Every firmware update on any system can be repeated this should never be a return to base situation. If it is then the manufacturer is not following the basic rules of the game.

I select the waypoint and run the average option - that sorts out the waypoint. I wonder how poor your maps are that you need to do this?

Going to france with my 60csx
SandyGarrity replied to ProgrammerGeek's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hi I was in France in June. Took my 60csx along and used it with the really good French Cartography Service maps - their maps show the same grid as is you can select from the unit and are in French, Engish and German. I am sure most people forget that a GPS is just another tool that can, and should, be used with a paper map. -
And here is a European map for you to look at.

Windows Vista And Garmin Usb Drivers
SandyGarrity replied to ComicBookCacher's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hi All You are using a BETA release of the Operating System please do not expect it to talk to every driver on the planet. BETA releases are for testing not for production machines. Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer - toddles of muttering to himself about users!!!! -
Let's Talk Low-tech - Handheld Compass'

Silva for me, mine is 25 years old and still not needed to change the batteries -
Think of the base map as a rough diagram of the planet with all the cities marked and a few roads, rivers etc. Not really usefull but nice to have.

Very tongue in cheek - not a techie then! Having been in IT (I, and lots more people, make the internet work) for over 20 years I'd say that their support team do very, very well considering: It is FREE 99.99% of the calls they get are from people who have not read the documentation Looking at some of their server reply I'd say that they have a Lunix box or two running their web services. How many servers are in your cluster?

Ring Garmin in the UK first thing in the morning and speak to them. Let their support team work out what the problem is.
