www.gps.gov.uk might be worth a look and a phone call!

What does your Mum/Mom need the unit for? That must drive to ultimate choice.
How does SHE like the menus.
You are buying this for her not you!

Thanks to all for the replys. I kinda figured Garmin set it up that way. Too bad because it's PITA.

I take it you have not studied maths or navigation? As there is no known way to mankind of proving exactly where you are on the planet at any given time. For less than €10,000 - and even that will give the reading -/+ something!
-
PITA.
What does that mean?

I was thinking of projects I could do when it is too wet to cache.
Take up mountaineering on the West Coast of Scotland.
-
I have visions of you waking in the night just to check you have not moved!!!!!!!

In the UK there is a database of VERY, VERY accurate locations done by the National Survey organisation check out www.gps.gov.uk I've found my nearest point and stood on it for 5 mins to see what my GPS said. +/- 3m (about 10 foot) was as good as I got and good enought for me. I am sure you should have a simular datbase in the USA

Hi
There are often technical reasons why "updates" are not released to the planet while new production models get the new software, e.g. there might be a problem with ungrading from version X to version Y. Any responsible software and hardware developer does not want in introduce a problem - the helpdesk/service desk would get swamped in about 3 nanoseconds (judging by the posts in here!).
-
Is there any reason why you are not using the Map screen in the GPS?
-
What bit of the planet are you on. It would help as you may not want to ship something half way accross the world.
-
I group my Waypoints by name, e.g. RunA1, RunA2, CampA1 CampA2, as the unit lists alphabetically then you have them sorted and the ones you don't want to see put them as zHome.
-
No!
You can use any cable. I plugged it into another cable and it worked fine.

I was considering upgrading to a unit that has a magnetic compass
Do you REALLY mean a magnetic compass?
-
You need to ask WHY you need a GPS?
Is it to navigate from place to place by road?
Is it to navigate in "Wild Country"?
Once you have that sorted then you need to ask do I want to SUPPLIMENT paper maps? If so then this leads you to selecting the correct mapping software.

Briefly discribe the GPSr you use.
Mine is grey with a flat screen on the front with several input buttons and a rocker switch. On the top there is an ariel
-
In THEORY you only need 3 points to get a fix in ANY type of navigation. More is better so I suspect that the microprocessor is programmed to use a min of 4.
-
Well it got to be on or off. If it was on 50% of the users would complain if was off the other 50% complain - they just cannot win! :-)
-
That looks just like mine!
-
A tiny, tiny difference in signal! It takes 0.125 seconds for the signal to travel 35,000 km to your GPS I'll leave you to work out the maths.

I wonder if he has gone?

As a mountaineer the 60CSX fits the bill exactily. The altimeter acts as an indication on how high I am on the mountain AND helps with weather forecasting. The electronic compass works superbly in area where there is rock that is magnetic, e.g. Skye in the Western Isles of Scotland.
I must add that I use a GPS as an extra tool in my navigators bag, a map and compass and years of practice are my primary tools, and am not a Geocasher, why visit these boards you ask? Well there is a huge amount of very, very good information on them.

What a wonderful posting ... I am in stiches,....

I hear Santa needs some help!!!

I kill Dragons (J R R Tolkien has a lot to answer for as I love "The Hobbit").

What is the $ to £ conversion these days? 1 U.S. dollar = 0.524(3 d.p) British pound.
