  1. I submitted a cache once, without the cache in Place. However I noted to reviewer that the cache was not in place, due to a magnet strength problem, and not to publish it yet. I would replace the magnet and and enable the listing when it was ready. This worked out well and no one got angry.
  2. You can save the .loc or .gpx file for any given cache without paying, then just open up Google earth, goto file- open- then pick (gpx, loc) from the file type box, and browse to the file that you saved, and it will plop the cache location on your map and zoom to it.
  3. I struggled with this same problem.. I don't have an easy answer, but this is what I do.... I save a waypoint in GE as a KML and the coords will be listed in DegDecimal if you edit the kml with notepad... Then I convert it back to GPS coords at the following link.... GPS Coord Converter or convert coords from your GPSr into Deg Decimal, then edit a .loc or .gpx file and paste in your coords and open it up in GE... I'm sure there is an easier way, this is just how I work around it...

  6. Did you sign the log book and toss it back on the ground? I did a multi once, where the final spot was occupied by a gallon frezer bag and a pencil, the Ammo Box was gone, but the muggler left a baggie and a pencil... I logged on a piece of paper and put it in the bag, went home and logeed a DNF - Needs Maintenance... I think everyone gets to be the bearer of bad news every now and then... It's even worse when it's your ammo box that gets muggled....
  7. This is kind of related, I think... In the Wayne National Forest of Southern Ohio, No caches are to be place near the ATV trails, or in any developed recreational areas e.g. Lake Vesuvius (an area with plenty of traffic and hiking trails). However caches can be placed in other areas of the National Forest with permission. How does that make sense? Not in the park, but somewhere out in the woods off the side of state route 93 would be okay? I don't get it...
  8. I'll share one of my Recent DNF logs that reflect a possibility. "Tried this one this morning with **** (3rd attempt) at 8:00am on Sunday morning. I was prepared to crawl around untill I found it this time. There was a person standing in the vicinity of the cache, and we thought it looked like he was holding a GPS. As it turns out he was a muggle holding a can of Natural Light.. The other 11 were on the ground. He said he just stopped to have a few before making his way down to Coal Grove. It's not often that you get to see such fresh trash. We thought that CITO at this moment might not be wise, so we walked around the car and went on our merry way."
  9. If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to set up a multicache where the first leg you find a key, and second leg you find a big padlocked storage unit full of new furniture, and electronics.
  10. If I am caching with my kids (2 & 4) They always want to trade items... IT doesn't usually matter, as long as they get to take something. If I am caching alone, I usually drop whatever small trade items I have on hand, and TNSL. Unless it is an ammo box, In which I grab a big thing or two from my bag to drop, or trade.. I once found a medium sized cache completely empty and restocked it to the brim on a whim.. In short it is the log that makes me happy. For me the urge to trade faded, and it is the thrill of the find that lingers.
  11. Maybee he put in several waypoints from a pocket Query in the night before, and didn't have his GPS on as he went to work....
  12. The speed on my GPSr usually shows 2-5 mph slower than my speedometer. I'd say the GPSr is probably right...
  13. If you can't find it, replace it! I admit it. it was me. Thanks for trying to humiliate me, since I see you have nothing better to do at the moment. This is also taken slightly out of context... GCRE7W Thanks -shammond
  14. I use a CF GPSr in a HP IPAQ hx4700. first of all I put my pocket queries into google earth.... to get a good idea of Geographical location.... I use GPS Babel to convert the GPX to microsoft streets and trips. edit the file in excel and swap the Name and description colums... then import into streets and trips, then export a map to the IPAQ I use GPX sonar to read my GPX listings on the IPAQ, and use Pocket Streets and Trips to get to the cache area. Then I Use BeeLine GPS to take me the last mile... MS Pocket Streets and Trips hasn't changed in 3 or 4 years, and is lacking many good features for the Cacher.... If anyone knows of a Pocket PC app that blends the best features of Beeline and Pocket Streets and trips please let me know.... That would be great.
  15. Bicker Bicker - Fuss and Fight. I hid a lame Micro, on a cold winter night. A micro in a lampskirt A micro in a tree. Everyone's so serious More serious than me. I'll hide em wherever I can Like it or not if you please. My next micro will be special Containing limburger cheese. This is a fun hobby or sport if you will But people get so angry that gives me a chill. So get your big sticks and beat that great horse. and when the thing dies beat it some more, of course.
  16. You can get a US GLOBALSAT BC-307 CF Reciever for 59.00 on ebay... I purchased one for my IPAQ and I've been using it for a week now, and it has worked great. It was the cheapest one that I could find. hope this helps.... shammond
  17. I have a IPAQ hx4700 and I use Microsoft Streets and trips 2006... I run loc or gpx files through GPSbabel to make a Streets and trips datafile, then import into streets and trips. Then just export the map to the PDA and open it in pocket streets and trips. All your waypoints show up on your map. And you can copy all the gpx files to your PDA and use something like GPXSonar which will give you pretty much all the information from each cache page right on your PDA. I really like doing it this way, I'm just afraid of getting my IPAQ wet, out in the woods. I hope this helps....
  18. I found 2 out of 3 today. Geocaching isn't addictive..... I'm going to skip lunch tommarow and look for a couple around where I work... I can't wait for the time to come when I can spend a whole day looking. Thanks Again!
  19. I had to wait for decent weather today, because my kids are very young (2 and 4). I found 1 out of 3. I didn't find the first one, for fear of getting mud in my wifes new car. I found second one without much trouble. I couldn't find the third, because I ran out of day light and had to take the kids home... I'm going to take another stab at it tommarow... I can't wait to go again.... I'm hooked... Thanks for the encouragement.
  20. I've never been geocaching before, and I'm terribly excited. I've been preparing for this all week, and I've been driving my wife crazy... I ordered a new USGlobalSat BC-307 CF GPS reciever from ebay for $61.00. It came today and it seems to work great. I'm using it in an HP Ipaq hx4700. Using it with pocket streets and trips 2006 seems to work fairly well. Standing on my front porch, It shows me around 50 feet from my actual location on the map. I've put all the all the local caches im interested in into GPXSonar, and I put all the waypoints into my local map before I exported to the PDA. So as soon as it stops raining, the whole family is going to go out on our first Geocaching excursion in the Ashland, KY area. The wealth of information that I have found at geocahing.com and in the forums, has been invaluable in the process of getting ready. I just wanted to get that off my chest and thank everyone in the community for thier posts and thier help.
