  1. In the Canadian rocky mountains, there is no signal for a cell phone anyway. all I take with me is my compass, my smarts, and my emergency kit... if you know how to use all 3, you should do just fine....and telling someone where you're going might help
  2. a gun while geocaching?? I am definetly more afraid of humans in the wild, then the wild animals!!! especially after some of what I just read. Jeez, I was born and raised in Canada's Rocky Mountains, which is bear country, as well as cougars, (insane) moose, wolves, etc. All people have to do is remember not to hike alone, hike in a group, make lots of noise (carry bear bells) stay at least 100metres away. Never approach or feed any "cute" wild animal. most of the time pepper spray, isn't very effective, because of wind, rain, shelf life, etc. there are a few diferences between a black bear and a Grizzly, but the easiest to remember is that a grizzly bear has a large hump between the shoulders, which is solid muscle, a black bear does not. They are also almost 400kg. A black bear weighs about 150kg. A black bear can climb a tree, grizzlies, can't. STAY ALERT TO STAY ALIVE!! unless you're a hunter, I'd advise to leave the guns at home.

  4. YEAH, I'd say I was dadgum lucky! And I'm dadgum lucky it wasn't a bear either LOL I am MTNWOMAN hear me roar!! hehehe Born and raised in Alberta I've spent a lot of time in the Mtns, even though they're a couple hours away. As far as I'm concerned anything that makes that much noise comming through the bush, has the right of way and you better get the hell outa it's way....I've seen alot of people do alot of stupid things around "cute" wild animals. But on a happier note, I made another trip out there last week on holidays, and got the pleasure of seeing a Lynx!!! 30 plus years of going to the beautiful Rocky Mtns, and this is the first time I've seen one in the wild.... I'm still excited! and now I have another story to tell of one of my many road trips! oh yeah, today we saw a momma black bear with two cubs had my camera, but didn't get a pic. Oh well, we'll try again next week

  10. went out caching last week, in the Mtns. I left my buddy in the car and set out by myself walking along a well worn trail (tsk tsk) when I heard a large crunching sound in the bush. There's grizzlies in the area!I knew it was BIG and close, I'd never out run it! So my first thought was to shimmy up a tree a fast as I could. I'm no more then 8ft up this big Poplar tree, when I heard whatever it was, break through and onto the path. well of course I had to see it, so I looked down from my perch and was almost face to face with a dadgum cow moose!!! WOW do they ever have BIG EYES!! She was looking right at me and sniffing the air, just as I heard another noise comming from the same direction. Low and behold, out came her baby from the trees. She let out a low grunt and continued on her way....the same way I just came from....I waited about 10 mins, then climbed from my not so safe perch (hmmm, how the heck did I make it up there?) and headed back to the car. When I got back to the car, my buddy asked if I saw the momma and baby moose on my way back. all I could manage was a nod of my head and a snicker....the whole time I had my camera dangling around my neck, but never did get a picture never did make it to the cache!

  12. I will be in Penticton, BC this weekend for a wedding, we will be busy, but I'm hoping for some geocaching time while I'm there.... My question is... are there any caches near 'Summerland' or 'St Andrews by the Lake'that I should really check out while I'm there? any recommendations? thanks
  13. search "by country" "Canada", "Alberta", from the main search page. once on this page, you can "search for more caches" from there you can put in Latt/Long. it will give you caches in the area are closest.

  15. I am still new to geocaching, and have yet to purchase a GPS. I have been lucky enough to find a few caches without one. Using clues and being familiar with the areas! I was given a hint I would like to pass onto you and others.... Canadian tire does match prices, a GPS is slightly lower in price at Walmart. But Canadian tire will give you back Canadian tire money (close to$34) if you pay with cash for you purchase. some of the GPS' have a $50.oo mail in rebate. it's a good savings when you add it all up. I have yet to compare that pice with gpscentral. happy shopping

  19. Glad to hear that you'll be popping by one of our wonderful parks and picking up a bug. I am also going to Penticton in a week, but I don't think it's ethical/or right to carry a bug, since I'm "part" of the cache. even though my bug is just sitting and twitching in the box Enjoy your trip Meecachers!!
