  1. Ditto Perhaps i was not clear on that point. It is possible to log a cache without claiming a find
  2. I hid a cache in a neat location, a cut bank cave under a overlook right on the ocean. The way down is a bit steep, and the rocks are sharp, but with a little care you can access it at high tide in a rainstorm without getting wet. Most seekers loved it, a few thought it was too dangerous for their pets or kids. Fine. Others , however, wrote "I knew it was down there so I logged it anyway" I have a problem with that. If you dont see or touch a cache, but log it as a find, it ruins the game. You might as well say I pulled up in the parking lot, checked my gpsr, and it was 200 feet west down in a ravine. logged another one 345 found. What do you do about these guys?
  3. Open the .loc files directly in MapSource. CLICK HERE to download the update for the latest version of MapSource software version 6.10.2 as of March 17, 2006. Then install it. Then Open MapSource, Click in "File" and select "Open". Browse to the location of where you saved the file on your computer - select the file and click the "Open" button! ..it's THAT easy! It sure was. Thanks for the heads up on the update, once I downloaded it I had 400 caches on my gps in about 5 minuits Player2
  4. 1 Mapsource is the only software that will download maps to a garmin gpsr 2 Your particular gps is not capable of downloading maps 3 I found this out the hard and expensive way, and upgraded to a garmin legend for $170.00 Sorry bud, but those are the facts Player2
  5. How do you transfer waypoints from gsak to mapsource?
  6. How do you transfer waypoints from gsak to mapsource?
  7. I recently downloaded gsak to manage downloaded waypoints. What I want to do is transfer them to garmin mapsource, so I can download them to my gps. In theory I am supposed to be able to convert loc files to a format compatible with mapsource. I have been beating my head against the wall trying to figure it out. Can someone please explain it to me slowly, using small words?
  8. I want to install an in dash computer capable of gps functions, and fuel and timing control, as well as being a fully functional machine. im also toying with the Idea of a touch screen, but am unfamiliar with the tech aspects. I realize this seems like an ambitious project, but I am only in the research phase, and have no idea if ill have to build everything myself or not. Whats availible out there? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  10. I have a Legend and I would not say it is discontinued because of the serial port, you just have to add some additional equipment to upload or download if you do not have a serial port. The Garmin Topo maps are not bad and I feel were worth the money I spent on the program. There is not another alternative although you may be able to find the program in the For Sale section or on E-Bay for less the $100.00. How much are will 8 megs give you will depend on where you are and what you want to upload. I was able to upload a fair chunk of cental and northern New Mexico into my Legend. The avionics store where I bought mine stated thet they were in fact discontinuing the legend, and gave the serial port as the reason. do you use a usb to serial connector, or is there a different patch cord availible?
  11. Thanks Milbank Thats the kind of solid info I was looking for, Im off to the for sale section and ebay, got serious shopping to do Thanks again Player2
  12. I have a garmin etrex legend, plain jane unit, practicaly discontinuied due to the serial port connection it requires. The store where I bought it wanted to sell me $100 program to download topo maps on to my unit, which only has 8mgs storage capacity. my questions are 1. is the software worthwhile? 2. is there a less expensive alternative? 3. how much area will 8 mgs give me?

  16. so all you have to do is post 10 ?
  17. Although im just a rookie, to me a great day of cacheing is about the hunt, the company, and the amount of fun you had. Quality has more value than quantity.
  18. Usually a manufacturer would be so proud of a feature like a built in battery charger, that it would cost you plenty and be well advertised. as for the clock feature i assume it is the same as any computer, a small amount of dedicated memory, and hardwired battery within the unit are most likely dedicated for this purpose.
