  1. So, there's a holiday weekend coming up and there's this problem with the caching along a route function that we knew was coming up too... surely none of the cachers out there will want to use that feature during their holiday travels, right? Grrr...
  2. Yes, it's been connected to a Mac, but hasn't been a problem before now. I took out the SD card and it ran fine. Put it back in, turned the unit on, and weirdness recurred. I had to take the batteries out to get it turned off! SD card is now out and it seems to be working o.k. Thanks for the suggestions! KS&k
  3. I've recently started having problems with my Garmin GPSmap 60 CSx unit. A couple of days after installing new batteries (after minimal use), it wouldn't turn on unless it was plugged into a power source (car power outlet or computer). Two days ago, I put in brand new batteries and it started up. I let it get my location, then turned it off. The next day, I tried to go caching but it wouldn't turn on (even when I connected it to the car power outlet). When I got home, I put in more new batteries and it started up. I took the batteries out overnight and put them back in this morning and it started up fine. I'm wondering if there's not some kind of power drain that's happening after I've turned it off. That still wouldn't explain why it wouldn't work when it was plugged in. Any suggestions about what to do, or should I just can it and get a new one? TIA KS&k
  4. Thanks for your suggestions so far. FWIW, we are premium members, and we do log our finds (and DNF's!) on the cache pages. I started the bookmark list because 1) I couldn't get the website to keep a sequential list all in one place; 2) it's easy to go back to the page of a cache we found a couple of years ago but can't remember the name of; and 3) since the bookmark is kept private, I can write a description about how each cache is hidden and how we found it (something I wouldn't do on the cache page). This is useful if someone wants a hint on a cache you found long ago and don't remember, or if you had an adventure finding the cache and want to write about it but not necessarily publish it on the cache log. I use Crew 153's method above to keep the bookmark entries sequential. I've checked back and it's still stuck at 150. The last date for a find is 1/2/08! Judging from the responses, it looks like the best way to keep track of sequential finds is somewhere other than GC.com. That's too bad, 'cause it's been very easy to just edit the cache name in the bookmark list and keep it all in one place. Apparently we aren't the only ones experiencing difficulty w/ bookmarks, since there's another thread about them. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions! KS&k
  5. I've been keeping a private bookmark list called "Our finds," where I describe each cache we find and keep them in chronological order. We recently passed our 150th find and I've continued to record the finds in the bookmark, but the last 5 entries aren't showing up (even though the bookmark says the total number of records is 155). I've checked around but can't find that there's a limit to the number of bookmark entries you can have. Is 150 the limit that'll show, or am I doing something wrong? While we're on the topic, can someone suggest a better way of keeping track of our finds? I hate having to start from page 1 of the bookmarks every time I enter a new cache... TIA KS&k
  6. We each have our duties: I load the GPSr & Palm w/ their info, and I drive the geo-van. My wife uses the GPSr and navigates. My daughter reads the description and last 5 logs on the way to the cache. Once we get out of the van, we all search. Reading the last 5 logs helps us decide if we want to go after the cache or wait til another day. It also helps to know if the cache hasn't been found recently, or if there is a special situation surrounding the cache which the owner didn't include in the description. I always scan all the old logs when I'm posting our entry - it's neat to see the cache's history! KS&k
  7. ...and of course, if there have already been a lot of switchbacks, it's probably safe to assume there will be at least one more... KS&k
  8. We just got back from the MB/Surfside area this past Sunday! We really liked the two we did in Huntington Beach State Park (Spooky Forrest and Archer & Anna). We enjoyed going to Inlet View, the Hidden Boardwalk Cache, and Misty Passage even though they were DNFs for us (for one reason or another). Muggler's Park was a tricky hide at a nice community park in Surfside, and "TWISTED" was a well-stocked cache near the air base. The Pancake Cam was a fun web-cam cache. We also visited 1611 KJB #2 Beacon, the 'Imagine' Geocache, and King's Ransom on the way back to Columbia (though we DNF'd the last one - getting dark and we left the clue back in the car). Some were better than others, but they were all fun - even the DNF's, which happened mostly due to high muggle activity. Hope this helps. Have a great holiday, and go get those smileys!! 9. Thanks to all for your replies regarding this issue. I'll quit worrying about it and just go try and find some markers! Thanks again! KS&k
  10. Recently got a GPSr to start geocaching and I want to find some benchmarks to see how close I can expect it to get me to the listed coordinates. I d'loaded some benchmark coordinates, but I notice they've got "NAD 83" next to them. I'm pretty sure the geocaching coordinates are listed in WGS 84. How can I enter the NAD 83 benchmark coordinates and find them w/out messing up the WGS 84 geocache coordinates I've already entered into the GPSr? I've looked in the forum & FAQ's, and I can't find anyone else w/ this question. That means I'm either the first person to run into this problem or there's a very simple answer that I just can't seem to see... TIA KS&k
