  1. While I understand why 2 is popular, it is practically un-usable in most metro areas. It is just too busy. The cost of radios has come down drastically, so it would not be a huge investment for those with older radios to upgrade. If I'm not mistaken, most, if not all newer radios have channel 12 capabilities.
  2. Very cool! If he makes it to SoCal, we'll try to grab him and take him along to a Kings game.
  3. I see no problem with it as long as the fee is clearly stated in the description.
  4. Captured this homeless "shelter" yesterday near the Bayside Cross cache

  6. I've had this happen a few times as well, as recently as yesterday. It seems to happen when I've got it hanging around my neck and I've lost the signals. I'm using the latest beta software, 2.40c, but it's done it a few times prior to that upgrade well. I've looked throughout the menus to see if there was an auto-off setting, but haven't seen anything. [This message was edited by Paul & Suzanne on August 11, 2002 at 10:45 AM.]
  7. quote:Everyone laughs at me about it now but what would YOU think if you saw a pit bull coming right at you. I'm a part-time meter reader for the gas company and encounter all kinds of dogs daily. Most dogs won't attack unless they are threatened or you are on their turf. When I'm working, I'm always on their turf, and even the nicest dogs can get pretty mean. Part of my geocaching equipment is a can of pepper spray... just in case.
  8. While the pocket query is very cool, the first thing I'd like to see implemented is the ability to get the results on demand, rather than on a schedule. As it is right now, I tend to select nearly every day, so I know I'll have the latest query if I decide to do some caching. This results in a lot of wasted bandwidth/emails, since most days I simply delete them. If it were on demand, I'd probably only run 1 or 2 per week.
  9. A good compromise would be for the coordinates (not a text description) for parking to be included in the cache description. Those of us who don't want to know simply wouldn't use them. Those who only prefer the hiking adventure could.
  10. Getting there is the most fun part, and in my opinion that includes getting to the best spot to ditch the car and rely on the legs. As mentioned before, a lot of the aimless driving can be avoided with some research of the maps. Sometimes we do this, and other times we go out with nothing but coordinates.
  11. For the same reason you're looking for one, I picked up a NEW (not refurbished) Palm m125 on eBay for about $100 - It seems to do everything I want, and more. email me if you want the seller's ID... I think they sell these regularly and I received it quickly and in great condition.
  12. quote:Wait, is this broken? I just realized that I haven't received my weekly new cache notification email for the past ccouple of weeks, even though several new caches have been placed in my area. Same here.
  13. Keep in mind that a cell phone will often lose coverage in many areas where caches tend to be hidden. Even Nextel's "direct connect" isn't direct, as the name implies. It still has to go through their cell site. So, if you happen to be in a no coverage area, direct connect won't even work if you're 20 feet away from each other (nor will any cell phone). I just added a couple of walkie talkies to our backpack. At least that way if one person gets hurt or seperated, there can still be some communication while the other gets help or searches.
  14. For several years (going back to carrying large battery packs!) I was in charge of the cell phone accounts and hardware at a fairly large, nation-wide company. Over the years we used a variety of providers and phone makes/models. In the end, the most reliable were AT&T as the provider and Nokia for the hardware. None are perfect, but they were consistently above the others.
  15. I'm all for that! Too many times I've submitted a query, only to find I messed something up and have to wait until the next day to see if I got it fixed. Not a good thing if you need a quick query. Then, once I do get it right, I find myself leaving it "turned on" and get email/files that I don't need every day. I think your suggestion would be a Win-Win.
  16. My wife and I are equally as enthusiastic about our new-found hobby. The kids (19, 18, and 15) think we're dorky... but they thought that even before we started Geocaching. Our 15 year old daughter has gone on a couple occasions, but would much rather "hang-out" with friends. Typical, I suppose.

  18. I had a Palm some time ago, but sold it because I rarely used it. With this new feature, I'd like to get another one for the sole purpose of this application. I want to spend as little as possible... what Palm model should I get? I'll probably buy used or refurbished, so even a discontinued model is fine.
  19. And I'm not a big fan of background images either.

  23. Thanks for the tip Alan! I tried that on my Legend and it works nicely. That'll be a timesaver for sure. I would love to see a thread or a link with some other hints and tricks for the various GPS units out there.
