  2. Hey, thanks for all the info. I picked up a writer/reader tonight. But how about Kodak SD 512 card for an XL? - SunnyWalker
  3. Tell me about your SD Cards: 1) What brand name? Problems? Joys? 2) Amount of memory on your SD card? Problem? 3) Brand names to stay away from? 4) Are there particular brand name SD cards that work better in particular GPS Units? e.g., "Magellan work best with XXX brand name SD Card in my experience". Any GPS Units/SD cards proprietary in your experience? 5) In the field, do you notice any type of SD card (brand name, capacity, memory) working better than others? Thanks. See you on the trail. SunnyWalker
  4. I ordered Mag MapSend Topo USA from Tiger the other night. Should come by this weekend. I also purchased a 512 Mega bite Kodak SD card from Walmart the other night. I have as yet to put it all together. I need to delete some Geocache sites on my XL that I have been to. Maybe half of them, before I put all this together. I am wondering should I put the topo maps on the SD card and the other data, e.g., geocache site data, on the internal memory of the XL? -SunnyWalker
  5. Thanks for the Info. Just to let you know it is a: Kodak SD Card 512 MB There was one just the same but for a bit more. I can't remember how much, maybe $10-25 more. They told me that the more expensive one was for Video cameras and etc. The one I bought cost me $32.09 On the back of the pkg it lists systems and all it is compatible with and then has "Most SD devices". It has pictures on the pkg illustrations of things like cameras, printers, cell telephones, Palm pilot, video camera, etc. I have not opened it yet and will return it if you think there is a question about it. I work part time a second job at Wal-mart and am using my employee discount there. Thanks for your time and take care. -SunnyWalker
  6. Folk: how about a Kodak 512 Mg SD card? I bought one assuming it will work in my Mag XL. What do you think? Anyone have any experience with Kodak SD card? -SunnyWalker
  7. today i bought a Kodak SD card for my XL. Does anyone have any experience with a Kodak SD card in XLs or other GPS Units? I assumed this would work. I have not tried it yet. Thanks for the input. It is a 512 SD card. I also finally bought the Magellan Topo for USA. Having fun. SunnyWalker
  8. I bought a Kodak SD card today. Have not tried it yet in my XL. Anyone use a Kodak? Is that a good one to get and use? It is 512 Megabites. SunnyWalker
  9. I personally have never had a Magellan "crash". This is my second Magellan. SunnyWalker
  10. That must be nice to have it on your wrist, easy to refer to. Does the face get scratched up or anything like that? -SunnyWalker
  11. I just discovered that Magellan now is offering a clip case for the eXplorist that "fits" on the belt. I (mistake) ordered one and will let you know how it works. I have since discovered the same item for almost half of what Mag is asking at Amazon.com SunnyWalker
  12. Ah . . . but the Garmins are gimpy little things?!!?? No? Oui!!! SunnyWalker
  13. I have the XL and use it for hiking and Geocaching. It fits in a pocket but I prefer to carry it in a pocket on my backpack strap or in a fannypack. It works and tracks while in either. I wondered about getting a "smaller" and "lighter" one but wanted one that would be good for years to come and "expand" along with my abilities and all. Batts so far have not been a problem as I do not hike with it constantly on. Also you have three settings for the screen and if you use the "lowest" one the batt drain is low also. Even if I had a 210 or Garmin I think I would use a fannypack or pocket on the backpack strap as I would want to protect the unit. In a pants pocket it seems (no matter what size) so vulnerable. But, to each their own. -SunnyWalker
  14. I put my Magellan XL on the dash and it works great. You can have it all except voice prompts in it. Nice big large screen. don't be in a rush, check the XL out and the handheld Garmins. -SunnyWalker
  15. Yeah, and I like the large fonts on EVERYTHING OF EVERY WORD on the screen! -SunnyWalker
  16. I bought my XL from Tiger for $300 and it had everything, a new one and new unopened pkg. - SunnyWalker
  17. SD Cards-one can be bought for $52.00 (1 gig) at Wal-Mart. Does anyone have an experience with Tiger GPS or Best Buy or something like that? Input? Thanks. SunnyWalker
  18. Anyone put a 2 Gig card in a XL or Garmin? Prob would get lost in itself. -SunnyWalker
  19. By the way, how do you insert a photo on the left. i.e., when I look at this screen on the forum I see, e.g., Embra's unique photo of himself and something about compost?? Hee, hee, ha, ha. Anyway, I have a photo but can't figure out how to put it in. I tried editing signature but this does not seem to affect the area I am talking about. Thanks. Sorry for change in subject. - SunnyWalker
  20. Oh, one question though: RE the SD card witht he MapSend Topo on it. does it contain any room or "extra" memory space left over foe one to use? I am curious, though leaning heavily on NOT purchasing this item. Instead the MapSendTopo for PC. -SunnyWalker
  21. Yes, thank you. I do like the idea of "isolating" any probs on the SD card. Also, the Map Topo on the PC has some advantages. You can utilize the 3D type of thing whereas if I purchased the MapSendTopo on SD card that would not be available? Yes, cheap expandable memory too. I saw on Tiger that I could get the top for $80 and so I could get the SD card too. For now I could start with a small card and only load particular geocache sites. Next month get a 1 gig card or something like that. Thanks. A lot to think about. I appreciate the feedback. SunnyWalker
  22. I have read a lot on this forum but have particular questions. I would really appreciate the help. Thanks. I own an Magellan eXplorist XL and am very happy with it. I load Geocaches in and erase them when I find them. I currently do not have a SD card in, nor have I loaded any Topo maps. Memory has not been a problem and do not forsee it as I said earlier I erase all found caches and erase all track routes and etc. Here are my questions and thanks again: 1) I want to add a Topo. Will the Magellan MapSend Topo work best as this IS (both) a Magellan product? 2) I am NOT a computer savy person. I read about converting this and converting that and doing this-way beyond my ability. Please don't tell me to do this type of thing. 3) How about an SD card with the Topo on it? This appeals to me as it is EASY! 4) Had a SporTrak Pro a few years ago and was able to use the Map Topo with it so think I COULD do that again. But as I am older now my patience is "smaller"?? 5) Please don' tell me to purchase this or that unit (different gps unit) as I am not going to do that, am pleased very much with the XL, not that anything else is not good also. Thanks. You are a great bunch of people. SunnyWalker
  23. I have an XL and I like it very much. I have used it in the field a lot and this has been during all times and at night. -Large screen with color is easier to read in daylight -Large fonts are incredible and easy to read (I like that as I have bi-focals) -"bulkyness" is no problem for me as I like the large screen -You have to remember that with a small unit, and I know there are those who really rave about the "little Units" that it will be smaller map, smaller fonts, smaller, smaller, smaller . . . . I know by experience (I used to use a SporTrak Pro, that if you have issues reading the smallness, then the XL is great. -Weight is more, but I personally make compensations and so can afford the weight. SunnyWalker
  24. I ended up purchasing an XL I find that if I carry it in my pocket it is ok, but it fills up a pocket. In my fannypack it works great. I mean, it will still track and everything right through the fabric of the fanny pack. So I will probably carry it there. Neat. SunnyWalker
