  1. You post a puzzle online, someone solves it online, you send them a certificate online... this has what to do with geocaching?

Well, to answer your question, the puzzle is on a cache page. I'd say that's possibly got something to do with geocaching.

Secondly, I never mentioned an online certificate. I said gift card, meaning in envelope, stamped, to the post office. (I go outside to get there) And unless they have one of those slots in the door for their mail, they'll have to go outside to retreive the letter.

Thirdly, as for my idea that started this thread, I'll mark one against. :drama:

  2. I have a puzzle cache that has been waiting over a month for the First to Find. I was thinking of having a First to Solve prize. I know some from several miles away work my puzzle caches, and they may be first to solve it, but not be able to get at it right away, and miss the First to Find. This would even include cachers who search puzzle caches just to solve them knowing they may never be in the area.

Has anyone done this? I was thinking of a gift card to be sent to them.

  3. Well, the cache page may say "You can't log a find on this unless you do this and this and this" but does it say you can't move tb's or jeeps unless you do this and this and this? :) Cache owners shouldn't dictate what happens to someone else's traveler.

  4. If it's anything like around here, the jeeps probably aren't really in there. But since the concept of a traveler is to travel, nothing is stopping you from finding the cache and setting the jeeps free. If your find log is deleted because you didn't fulfill the requirements, you still set the jeeps free.

**You could log a note instead of a find since you haven't met the requirements of the cache.

  5. Since you're not a paying member, I won't tell you how to do it as a paying member. I think this is available to all. Under search options on your account page it says "Search for caches from your home coordinates (filter out finds). Click on filter out finds and look for a cache listed as new. Sometimes you get lucky and find one that no one has found yet.

  6. Keep in mind "If you don't sign the log, it's not a find" is a forum rule, and wasn't included in the original rules of geocaching. They may not read the forums. Some of us still hold the simple definition of find.

How does that compare with this-

What are the rules in Geocaching?

Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple:

    1. Take something from the cache

    2. Leave something in the cache

    3. Write about it in the logbook

from the GC FAQ.....not the forums?

When you write a check, in the lower right hand corner, do you write about the check or sign it? "Write about it in the logbook" and "If you don't sign the log, it's not a find" are not the same thing.

  7. You're welcome to fly the short distance to Kansas and post notes on my caches. I don't think virtual noting is against the guidelines. You could keep track of these "simfinds" in some mapping software. I'd be happy to see some screen shots of my locations. And thanks for the idea; I've been flightsimming since "98".

  8. He is an example that I can give on asking for permission from Groundspeak. I had an event that I wanted to list personally. It was a bit on the edge. I presented the idea to Groundspeak saying that a cacher wanted to do it and I wanted to see what they thought about it. Rothstafari thought about it and got back to me after a few days. He said he would allow it since it was a teamwork type thing and would be a great way for geocachers to have some fun. This was right as the guidelines were being loosened up. I was prepared for the denial, but I figured that asking for permission was worth a shot. After he approved of the idea, I told him I was the cacher in question. He got a chuckle out of my approach, but it shows that even I went about it in the right way. The whirlyball event was great and cachers want to do it again.

And what if 2 days before the event a cacher complained and the event was pulled?

When we submit a cache for review, that is "us" asking "them" for permission. The cache that started this went thru that process, and was given permisson, for months. We don't have the option to ask Rothstafari directly, we have our local reviewers, and I'm guessing most of us don't expect our local reviewer to backpedal after such a long time.
