  1. After nearly 4000 finds I have had numerous caches that I just could not seem to see despite them being easy to find (whether it be rating, "easy" find in the logs, or all smileys except your frowny face). Listed below are a couple of my current ones that I just can't seem to locate despite them being easy. Let's hear some of you nemesis caches current or past: 1/1 I have DNF 3 times 1.5/1 multi that I found stage 1 on 4th attempt, Now a DNF on stage 3 2/1.5 that had 21 smileys then my 2 DNF with a CO check-up sandwiched in between
  2. Co-Greatest Geoachievements of the year: Breaking the century barrier with 117 finds in a day and the other hiking 14.39 miles in a day for 1 cache. Both ends of the spectrum there Worst blunder: Nothing major this year as in the past years while I caching I have got severe poison ivy (requiring a visit to the doctor), having my car saved by a park bench from running into a pond from a parked position, or nearly breaking my ankle/leg. So, I guess the worst was having my pants blowout in the crotch on a day of caching with friends. Luckily, I always carry an extra set of clothes since I usually get pretty dirty while caching.
  3. Looking through their website the actual brand of LocknLock does not have what you are looking for. Not sure about similar brands. website
  4. Well, that's bad caching! People should always adhere to laws, park rules etc....not doing so could lead to vanning of caches in those parks, cemeteries etc. A whole new topic which has been covered before though! No kidding that it can definately bring bad publicity. There is another cacher that I always thought to be a good guy. I met him during a group cache hunt and he made a comment suggesting hunting after hours. I started looking back at some of the newer caches seeing if he was FTF and found a few instances of hunting after hours. It just aggravates me that people think it is OK to break the rules just because there is FTF up for grabs. Back on subject, I am glad that everything worked out with the cache and there was not ill will.
  5. Around my neck of the woods there would probably be some upset FTFers (I am not one of them). It is usually a matter of less then an hour between publishing and FTF around here. The FTFers around here don't even care about park hours if it is for a FTF. Hope there are not any angry people waiting in your area.
  6. Looks like they had an outdoor activity family workshop there in October including one on geocaching. Maybe it was from that and did not get picked up. linky
  7. You may want to post this in the Northwest forum. I am guessing a moderator will move it there eventually anyway.
  8. I have 2 and not sure which one was scarier. The first happened when I was over 1 mile in the woods following a trail. The trail skirted this large clump of bushes and was on an incline. As I got around the bushes I slipped and fell. I did not think anything of it until I felt something stinging my back. I realized I had disturbed a yellow jacket nest somehow. I take off running down the trail trying to simultaneously remove my pack and t-shirt, swat the bees off me and my dog, and no kill myself on the trail. I am not a small person so it was not small task. I literally had to run over .25 miles to get away. I got stung about 6 times and had welts on my trunk. One stung my pinky and it swelled bigger then my thumb in a matter of a few minutes. I initially got worried about going into shock even though I never had a problem with bee stings before. However, as fast as it swelled it started returning to normal. The second happened this past summer while returning to the car after a cache. My dog all of a sudden took off crazy running down the trail. I thought he had taken off after a squirrel or something. I then realized he had stopped and was rubbing his face on the ground. By the time we returned to the car his whole face had swollen up. I am guessing he got into some stinging nettle or something similar. He continued getting worse to the point that his one eye was almost swollen shut and his breathing became a little labored. I could not remember whether dogs were able to have benedryl or not but my mother knows a vet so I gave her a call. I was told to give him Benedryl and it worked like a charm. Within 30 minutes the swelling was gone and we went on to finish up the caching day.
  9. Will it be apperent what type of equipment you will need? If it is not apperent then I may list it as a puzzle. If the equipment needed is apperent I would rate it as follows. Very special equipment that most geocachers would not have then a 5 for "special equipment". If it is something that many cachers may carry out of experience (Leathermen, Gerber, multitool, pocket knife, tweezers, mirror, flashlight to name a few) then I would rate it based off of locating the stages plus maybe .5. I would make sure it is apperent that you need special equipment and that you may have to make multiple trips. I would also set it up that the final is not out of the way due to the possiblity of multiple trips.
  10. The TODO List for me usually involves working on some sort of challenge cache. The ones currently on top of the list are: Well Rounded Maryland Cacher (The Fizzy Challenge) GC16QQZ (completed PA version where I live) The Maryland All Counties Challenge GC13ER9 (completed PA version) Tour de Cache - NJ County Challenge GCXQ4H Your Very Grave Challenge #2 GC1JC44 Cache Across America - GC12E08 (gathering these states as I go)
  11. I guess I looked in the wrong spot. I could not find it when I looked. This thread can be locked.
  12. For at least a few weeks i have been having problems when I load some cache webpages on my home computer. If there is a picture that is wider then the standard page the following happens: 1. The left hand edge of the picture gets cut off. 2. The options bar (Getting Started, Hide & Seek a Cache, etc) either gets cut off (like the pciture) and is superimposed overtop of the rest of the webpage in standard position, or it appears on the bottom of the webpage in its entirety. When the above happens there are no drag bars to allow me to scroll over to the edge of the page. Other then the obvious frustrations it does not allow me to see the coords of some caches and when I check out someone's profile I can not see the geocaches section because that "tab" is not present. Is this a website thing or a my computer browser issue? I am not computer savy so write your suggestions like I am a moron.
  13. I am glad I checked the forums this evening and saw this post. I have supported (financially) the Appalachian Trail Conference nd am a big proponent of the National Park Service, but on this issue it seems to overstep logic. That is unless they want to piss people off and see less traffic on the AT. I was actually planning on doing a cache along the AT that has been on my TO DO list since it came out. I would have at least like to have had warning that it was coming (maybe there was but I was unaware). I am not normally a person to make a stink, but in this case I think I will be contacting both the ATC and the NPS. Some of the best caches I have ever found are along the AT and I am now thankful that I did a section this summer to grab some of the caches. If we are lucky in PA they will turn around and prohibit caches on state game lands (that was my bit of sarcasm). Edited to add. Hmm, I just checked a stretch along the AT and the archived caches seem hit or miss whether they were archived or not. I wonder if this is still a "work in progress"?
  14. Did you ever here that if you build a better mouse trap you will just make a smarter mouse? I cache solo the vast majority of the time and if a cache suggested needing 2 people I would likely try to figure a way to do it by myself. Just like caches that say you need a watercraft to get to them. My first thought is always can I wade or swim since I do not have a boat.
  15. So why are night caches approved? Just about every night cache uses fire tacks that are NAILED to a tree. Seems like is some cases it is okay and in others it is not. Jim Very good thought. I never thought about that before. I would like to see Keystone's response to this as in essence it violates the same guideline mentioned in his repspone to the OP's question.
  16. In my opinion they violate this guideling: Under Off-limit (Physical) Caches- "Caches that deface public or private property, whether a natural or man-made object, in order to provide a hiding place, a clue or a logging method." Again this is my opinion or better put interpretation. However, I have seen more then my share of nails, eyelets, painting, velcro, etc for cache containers. I report gross viloations of the guidelines but not the borderline ones. I have never reported a cache for what you are asking. My reports have been for buried and commercial caches.
  17. I have one that is underwater and has stayed dry through my last check of the cache. I used a lock and lock box and created a watertight seal by puting vaseline over the seal that is on the lock and lock lid. I actually put a waterproof matchstick holder inside the lock and lock and did the same thing with the vaseline. tBut as mentioned the water has yet to penetrate through the lid of the lock and lock.
  18. I looked in past forums for the answer but was unable to find my answer so here goes: I have had Wherigo caches start coming up in pocket queries including closest of home coordinates. I have placed them on my ignore list and when I go to the cache pages they say that they are on my ignore list. However they continue to come up in closest unfound searched and more frustrating in my pocket queries. Is this something that I have to deal with? or is there something I can do to get them to not show up? Thanks in advance.
  19. 13 consecutive days with a find 670 consecutive day without a find
  20. A few hundred of so cache finds ago I was approaching 100 virtual, multi, and puzzle caches at the same time. I went out of my way to find multi and virtual caches to get them all to 99 so I could hit 100 of each on the same day. While waiting for the cache trip to hit 100 each (I was going the following weekend) I decided to find a spot for a cache I had in mind. A puzzle cache that was placed in that area had come up a few weeks earlier and I figured it out but was waiting to grab it until after doing my 100 thing. Yep, you guessed it while looking for hiding spots for caches I found the perfect spot for a cache and when I got to the tree there sat the ammo can that was the location of the puzzle cache. Cache is GC14WHZ, August 19, 2007
  21. Just when I thought they could not make the maps worse then their clumsy non user friendly poor scrolling previous upgrade. I am wrong yet again.
  22. That is nice that she is willing to give up possessions to fund your expedition. On a serious note reading your entry makes me think of my desire to through hike the Appalachian Trail someday. Best of luck.
  23. I am from that part of Lancaster and Dirty Work is only 1 mile from my house. I will list options that are at least close to the park where Dirty Work is located. 1.) Dirty work and the other in the park are easy HACC:..., Also check out some caches in Lancaster Central Park: 1.Indian Warrior Trading Path Cache (GCF827) 2 Lancaster Central Park Bushwack (GCF82D) 3 Tree Stomper (GCGJ6D) 4 It's Bionicle (GCH410) 5 Timberrrrrrr!!! (GCNKP0) 6 Four (GCVCK6) 7 Mill Creek Cache (GCW8B5) 8 Mill Creek Micro (GCW8BN) 9 Garden of Five Senses (GC59B9) 2. Either clever/fun hide: Concrete Jungle (clever, very possible DNF), Field of Dreams (GCVFFN) (clever if you never saw this type and get to see the local baseball stadium), Cemetery caches- Ancestoral Home (GCNEZR) Ancestoral Home #2: Reach for the Stars (GCNF0C) Ancestoral Home #3 (GCTCG4) If you can travel and have kids with you then a must do fun cache: Who wants a BANANA?!?! (GCC4C8) 3. Winter friendly: Depends on your definition? If you mean snow then it is likely you should be alright unless we get a snowstorm right before. I have been here 4 winters and the snow pretty much disappears as fast as it comes. It may be better to ask as the time approaches. If you want you can contact me through my profile regarding any caches you may be wondering about. Also if it is a weekend when you are doing your run then you can let me know. If I am available I will run along with you. Hope this helps and sorry for the unorganized display.
  24. I already had to archive a cache because of a pay phone being removed. However mine was because you had to call payphone and have someone answer a question to answer questions to get the coordinates. It was not an AT&T phone though; mayve other companies are doing the same. Edited to add I somehow missed the last few entries. Mine is similar to the Life Line cache that was listed.
