  1. Ever heard the saying '|Read the Flipping Manual' in other words, if you dont know how to cache then read up about it, it tells you what to do, how to do it, and what NOT to do. Its a simple as ABC.

Funnily enough there are also some forum guidelines that tell you what not to do:

"Respect: Respect the guidelines for forum usage, and site usage. Respect Groundspeak, its employees, volunteers, yourself, fellow community members, and guests on these boards. Whether a community member has one post or 5,000 posts, they deserve the same respect."

    Maybe YOU should RTFM.

I suppose that if YOU were to take a car out onto the road WITHOUT reading the flipping manual then it would be ok to run someone over because you were distracted by fiddling around trying to find which was the indicator stalk and which were the lights ? Instead of RTFM BEFORE you took the car out !!!!!! Maybe its not as serious but its the same principle.

  2.

Well, if this isnt a spoiler I dont know what is. I appreciate what your son is doing, but to tell everyone exactly where this cache is, is certainly not in the spirit of geocaching. Think before you type. It seems that it has been archived but even so, it might not have been.

And I think YOU need to think before you type... :(

Black Widow is Obviously a newbie - she only has 3 posts, and if you come along and blast her, then chances are she won't come back.

Perhaps a friendly, subtle email might have been a nicer way to go?

  3. Help my son did a cache at Kings cross st pancreas not sure what it was called but it was on the drain pipe next to half a luggage trolley going through the wall, the link being this is were the train to hogwarts departed. We have been trying to find it as he needs to log it as he forgot at the time (Jan this year) and he is now using his Geocaching as part of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh.

I cannot see the cache listed nor find any refference to it anyone know anything about it .

sorry if this has been asked before

  4. I have completed my first two geocaches using my sat nav to get me close and then resorted to searching and had to deliberately choose easy cache's with nice clues. What GPS system should I buy as I have limited budget (any tips on where to get used ones or anything in the UK)?

I am keen to hide my own cache's but need to know a bit before I begin - How do I get hold of official sticker things to put on my box? What are and how do I get geocoins as that sounds interesting? And generally again - any advice or help to get me started would be appreciated?

I basically need help and advice on anything and everything as am fascinated by the whole thing. Great excuse to take dog out and or kids and get some excercise too! If you could imagine your talking to a small child who has close to no knowledge of GPS and systems I really would be greatfull for any help getting started.

Hi Garry and Janine. I am, a relative newcomer too, we have been geocaching for over a year now but still got a few things to learn. But i will help you as far as i can.

First......GPS....Well there is a lot to choose from and most use a GPS made by Garmin. Although there are a few other makes around. I use the Garmin Legend which cost me £89.00 with UK maps installed. I havent found any faults with this model but the CX series cost a little more and have a faster chip installed, and they have colour screens. They also have a larger memory. But its all down to cost.

Dont know about the official sticker things as i print my own stickers etc.

    I also dont do geocoins.

If you ask for help it might be a good idea to put your general location in here so that those Geocachers that are close to you can possible take you and yours under their wing for a while to help you get 'acclimatised'.

I am near to Kings Lynn in Norfolk.

    Best Regards........John & Ann

  5. Rest of the World = 4 ........... Is it 132 Countries ?

United Kingdom =2 ............One little island ?

I would say percentage wise that the UK have an unbeatable record of Wherigo's...unless of course you are besotted with numbers, and think that we should have hundreds.

Such is the way of life these days that some people HAVE to have more than anyone else.

  6. I always thought that if there is a logbook in the cache that it had to be filled in to claim the cache. Or, in the case of Stonehenge a photo had to be taken of a certain stone and the picture sent to the owner of the listing to be verified before you could claim the find. If a picture of a field was all that was needed then I would have thousands of claims because I live in Norfolk (Field heaven). If these people want to cheat then let them, you know that your nettle stings etc mean that you have done the job properly. Cheaters never win. They just think they have.

  7. Well, i'm in the process of setting up the site on the actual server, however there is still a fair amount of work to do.

It might be that once the main part of the site is working we can crack on with getting the caches up and running then add 'features' in the future.

I would reckon that most of us are just sitting here waiting for the word 'GO' then its everyman or woman for themselves..........We have our site all sorted here in Norfolk, which is most unusual for Red Squadron as we are nearly always last in finding a cache place.

  8. If you're planning on going to any event caches it might be worth letting people know you have them for sale and taking them along, it would save other cachers from having to pay postage.

Good point....................but I dont know of any events that I am going to.

  9. It might sound obvious, and maybe I have missed the point but I would suggest E-Bay. Use the word 'geocaching' in the description.

Regarding size - it depends on the size. I paid about £6 for one of the smaller ones, and the postage was about £8!

No you are not missing the point, I was going to go there first but then I thought I would like to give those cachers that dont use eBay a chance. Not everyone uses eBay (or am I living in the land of make-believe :P ) Anyway, I will be advertising the Ammo Cans using the thread that PKLONG has kindly given me. If I dont get any responses then i will use eBay. Thanks

  10. There are several caches around Market Harborough set by Starz-Bars that include a CD in the cache, you take a CD, listen to it and need to then answer questions based on the tracks to find the next cache in the series. Works very well & a great way to work on a Puzzle! I guess there is some overhead in keeping the cache stocked up with CD's though.

    Jon.

You dont need to go to all the trouble of stocking up with CD's, just make a link to a free upload site which has the necessary music on it. Put this link in the cache box......Then all you need do is to go to that link, listen to it, get the clues and on to the next cache.

  11. Hi,

I live in Wymondham, Norfolk. I have tried to find 2 caches but didn't even get close. I don't know what I was doing wrong. Is there anyone who lives nearby that can help me or show me how to do this?

I feel quite disheartened, but I don't want to give up.

    Please help!

    Snake charmers

Red Squadron aka John & Ann will be only to pleased to help out. Hows about allocating one day and go and seek out a cache or two. We are not the most experienced but we do have 30 or so caches to our name. Thats a start.

Oh yes I almost forgot, we live at Whittington near Stoke Ferry / Downham Market. Its not far from Wymondham, as the crow flies.

  13. speaking as a novice I presumed that the mapping would be useful, is that not the case?

Can anyone come up with a quick list of must have functions that you couldn't be with out, coz I am getting more confused!

it turns out that my hubbies friend works for Garmin, so he's going to try and see if we can get a discount (well you've gotta ask!!!)

Hi Booklady, it seems that we are all (including me) giving you lots of advice about what to get but no-one is giving you the basics of how to use a GPS. So let me start the ball rolling by giving you a simple How to use a Garmin.

First I am not going to tell you all about it, that would take a while and really you will find that out when you get one. What I will tell you about is the simple GOTO function.

When you have a co-ordinate in the Garmin and you have gone to the Find Waypoints bit, you will then have a choice of functions. One if these is the GOTO function. On the screen will be the Co-ordinate and a compass and a countdown in miles, then yards, then feet. As you turn yourself towards the cache location the compass will turn and point to where you should travel. It will also reduce the miles and yards and feet the closer to the cache you get. Should you go past the cache, the feet / yards will increase so you know when you have gone past the cache. So with the aid of the compass and the mileage you can pinpoint a cache to within 10 to 20 feet. Then its up to you to look around for what looks like a suitable place to hide a cache. Thats where experience comes in. Right thats it really, and you will notice that not once did I refer to the map. If you plan your trips carefully beforehand you wont need a map. I hope you get a good deal with your friend who works for Garmin. Handy friend to have. Good luck

  14. i am new to geocaching, hoping to get a GPS shorlty.

After looking around I feel the yellow garmin extrex may be just a bit too basic and think that the Legend looks a likely candidate - I know it's not a top of the range model, but it seems to have a reasonable spec.

is this a good unit, or would you recommend something else?

We use the Legend and dont have any complaints so far. Its never let me down yet. I do however feel that the MapSource we have is not the best maps for it. I dont use the map section anyway, I use the GOTO bit which shows the co-ordinates and compass. This is really easy to use. I also bought the download cable and am able to download all my waypoints from the PC to the Legend. The later CX versions are in colour and have a faster chip installed, but hey you gotta start somewhere and where better than a Legend. You can always upgrade later if you want to.

  15. In this part of the world, there is fairly strong competition for FTFs, and although we are sometimes in the running, it would be good to get a few more! (Its all good fun, and it'll give the others something to think about!) Its almost always about 30 minutes from published to found, assuming its a trad cache...

So what do people do to give them an edge, if they're trying to get those FTFs? Obviously, there are the notification e-mails from GC.com, but sometimes they simply get missed or not downloaded in time. Any other tips? A message rule that plays a tune for notification e-mails only? Special software? Texts to a mobile?

    All help gratefully received!

    Dave

Ask Spindlewood ! He is a master at the FTF game.

  17. I thought FTF stood for First To Find, so that there can only be one FTF and in some cases joint FTF.

However there are an increasing amount of FTF claimers that just happened to be present when first found.

So come on you lot, play the game, PWFF if you were, FTF if you did!

Anyone with an ounce of sense would know that if they found a cache with someone elses username or ID in the log, then the FTF would belong to that first name. Its not rocket science. And yes, what IS PWFF ?

  18. I have had some fun and games loading the picture. This is the URL that is the link from Photobucket but I cant seem to didplay a picture. Like a few of the other guys, the insert image seems to state that it doesnt like what I am inputting and says 'dynamic pages in the tags are not allowed.

Hi, Do what I did ad paste the URL straight onto the reply window and dont use the Insert Image icon. It worked for me after spending a lot of time messing about with URL's.

Ok, well I must admit that it had me fooled. When i click on the icon for uploading pics I get a box appear that has a http:// in it, so I put in the photobucket URL. When i view it on the forum it only uploads a bit of text called [/img]

So I decided to just copy and paste the URL here in the reply window....BINGO !!

So why cant I use the Insert Image button ? Strange ?

Anyway, apologies to those of you that have put up with my feeble attempts at uploading a pic. And thanks for the help I have receivedfrom Keehotee and Paul.
