  1. Yeah.... I think ive been around long enough to know when to log my OWN bug.
  2. so should I wait to some bug movements so the millage will be counted or I log them now will the miles be added back later?
  3. You recruited me with that banner. I saw pics of your X on some web site and decided to check out geocaching.com. well thats pretty darn cool
  4. The Original post by Jeremy States that the bug on the front is staying the same...
  5. So what is up with the Jeeps now? Is the contest over now? When you go to the website for them http://jeep.geocaching.com you get redirected to the main page. I also see a lot of people are finding them and then logging them into the bug graveyard within a few days of getting them. Are they just souvenirs now? If so I’m gonna go try to grab one!
  6. I’ve looked around on the site for one but I came up empty. Need one that will look good as a 10” – 12” decal I have already checked and what I’m doing is already an approved use of the logos. Anyone got one? What I’m looking for is just the little Bar-coded bug thing
  7. In March 2003 I released 6 Matchbox Xterras as Travel bugs with their goal being to make it to GOX (Gathering of Xterras) 2003. It had been a while since I had gotten any notifications on movements so I checked today see where they all were. Not good news… #1 Traveled to 11 caches for a total of 2947 miles! Made it to Maricopa County Arizona Was removed from its last cache sometime between April 9 – June 25 2004 and never logged or placed in another cache. #2 Traveled to 1 cache 38 miles from where I released it. Was in a cache near Athens GA and removed sometime between May – December 2003 and never logged or placed in another cache. Never even made it out of the State! #3 Traveled to 1 cache 1085 miles away in Amarillo Texas. Cache was stolen a week later with the travel bug in it. #4 Traveled to 10 caches for a grand total of 6170 miles! This one made it to GOX! Was given to Ian at the event! #5 Traveled to 9 caches for a total of 1037 miles and ended up in Oxford Massachusetts in June 2004. Cache was stolen in less than a week as well. #6 Traveled to 8 caches for total of 1599 miles. This one also made it to GOX and was given to Ian Well I guess 2 out of 6 isn’t so bad… These all had printed on the tag “Do not pick me up unless you can place me in another cache!” Yet 2 cachers still felt the need to pick them up and keep them for themselves and never log that they removed them!
  8. OK now I feel really stupid! I emailed the seller on ebay to tell him I got a bad cable. He responded telling me he would do a refund or replacement and also told me he knew that this cable doesn’t work with Garmin GPS units. (I had not told him what it would not work on) I sat there thinking “sure would have been nice of you to put that in the auction description” but before I responded with that I went back and looked at the auction again. Sure enough there it was “Various USB Serial adapters have different incompatibilities. In particular, this cable is incompatible with GARMIN GPS” DOH! I responded with “a refund would be fine, thanks” When I bought it a made a list of people selling them with cables longer than 2 feet and then added up the buy it now price and shipping price to see which one was the best price. This one was the best… but dang if I didn’t read the whole thing first! Oh well lesson learned! Anyone have any experience with these 3 adapters? Belkin $24 “micro” $22 IOgear $24 These are all available locally in stores
  9. Tried a different USB / serial Adapter, loaded the drivers and the GPS worked with my laptop fine. Guess I just got a bad adapter, what a relief that it’s not my computer. Time to go shopping again!
  10. if i recall it ws set at 9600 on the desktop and i set it the same on the lap top
  11. Got a Dell Inspirion 1150 with windows XP home for Christmas. I bought the necessary items to use it with my Good Ol Garmin GPS III+ . First off why does no one make a USB GPS cable! How many Laptops these days still have serial ports! Maybe there is one but I jut missed it! I bought a combination power / data GPS cable on ebay for $15, its not a Garmin brand, says its made by “Gibson” I also bought a serial to USB adapter, which came with a driver disk. I have had Mapsource Topo for a while and have had no problems with it on my home computer. (got a great deal on it, knew I would have a laptop eventually) Connects with the Gamin supplied cable just fine to the desktop PC. Put it all together, installed mapsource and the drivers for the adapter. The computer keeps giving me errors that the GPS is not connected! I have tried manually selecting COM1-COM4, tried both USB ports and still get the same thing. I have also tried it with EasyGPS with the same results. I tried using my old Garmin Brand cable with the laptop to rule out the off brand cable causing the problem. I also tried the off brand GPS cable on the desktop computer and it worked fine. A friend of mine has the same set up on his newer Dell laptop with XP and mapsource metroguide as well as Easy GPS. He looked at it and all my settings and could find nothing wrong. Only difference on his is that he has a different brand of adapter and a Garmin brand DC/Data cable. For now the thinking is that the USB / Serial Adapter is bad. Going to try his adapter on my computer later today to see. Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas on things to check?
  12. From the auction "DRIVERS LICENSE, VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND PROOF OF INSURANCE" what does that have to do with anything?
  13. Anyone else have lines of resolution or lines of pixels on their GPS that no longer display? I have some lines that appear to be permanently gone and a few others that come and go as they please. Really starting to get irritating as one of the lines is where the “speed” is displayed while driving and is such that you can’t tell “50 from “60”. Anyone know of a DIY way to fix it? I’m not paying Garmin another $150 to “fix” it. Last time I sent my GPS to them they sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with it but still charged me $150! Paying again would be more $$ on repairs than replacement cost.
  14. I am a police dispatcher. Our map in our dispatching software has the option to display lat/long but I have been sitting her messing with it and I cannot find a way to enter a set of cords to get a location. Thats kinda dumb!
  15. I learned from a friend not to carry firearms into parks. snip stuff saw a box of ammo and asked about a weapon. He had it conceled on him, in the mayham he forgot to announce to the cop he had a legal conceled weapon. They got him for a firearm on public property, failure to announce to an officer a conceled weapon and a list of other offenses. Yeah I was just reading this thread thinking to myself "where are these people caching that they can legally carry their guns?" Most caches around here are in county and city parks and as far I know even with a permit you can’t carry your weapon in them. Even though I know many people that do anyway I choose to not too. But it does bring the argument in whose favor would the law be in? Say you are walking through the park and some thug with a gun jumps out from around a tree with his gun pointing it at you, you draw and give him a double tap. Perp is dead, you shot him in self-defense, but you weren’t supposed to have the gun there to begin with but of course neither was he. So whom does the law favor in this case? The crack head willing to do anything for his next fix? Or the armed citizen, who was minding his own business, has a CCW permit and shoots 200 rounds every other week at the range with the weapon he carries? In GA you don’t have to inform law enforcement that you have a weapon, of course if they ask it’s a good idea to tell them. I can only think of one time that I actually took my weapon with me on a hunt and it was in an area that it was legal for me to take it. It was also in a questionable part of Atlanta and I have no clue why the owner picked that area for a cache to begin with! Glock 23 40 cal with Remington golden sabers, and Federal hydra-shoks
  16. But how many of them can be removed to go geocaching with? How easy are they to hook up to "EASY GPS"
  17. I got this email this morning ------------------------------- From:contact@geocaching.com Subject: Listing Approved on Geocaching.com Text: This is an automated message from (this was blank) This is a quick message to let you know that your cache has been approved by approver: mtn-man. You can visit your listing at the following location: GOX or Busthttp://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=1accb9c4-275a-403e-abb1-0bb4fe6c8f60 --------------------------------------- Ok so it looks like an official email but the link is funky and whom it is from is left off. Of course it is very strange considering that my cache that it is referring to “GOX or Bust” was placed on 04/16/03 approved 04/16/03 and has been found 26 times already…. Then I checked the cache page, it shows “Last Updated: 8/20/2003 8:28:48 AM” Which is extremely odd as I have not edited anything on the cache page since maybe a few days after it was posted! So what’s this all about? Anyone else get one? This Isn't rocket science...
  18. Dang! and I thought I had some long winded log entries! This Isn't rocket science...
  19. With this on my back window… I get asked what Geocaching is quite often, some of the more memorable occasions… We pulled into a restaurant one evening and a Guy that pulled in behind us parked his car beside ours, got out and asked us what Geocaching was. After we chatted about it for a while he got back in his car, and left the direction we had just come from… Who knows how long he had been following us! I had another guy run behind me waving his arms for me to stop one day while I was backing out of a parking space at a boaters supply store. He said he had heard of Geocaching but had never met anyone that actually did and wanted to know more info. Which was fine but he didn’t exactly pick the best way to get my attention! This Isn't rocket science...
  20. Is 26" to big? This is the back of my Xterra This Isn't rocket science...
  21. I was recently describing Geocaching to a coworker and used the tag line “The Sport where you are the search engine!” They immediately retorted with “that’s not a sport!” Course that was coming from someone that played organized sports in High school and college. So what do you consider Geocaching to be? This Isn't rocket science...
  22. quote:Originally posted by LilDevil:Is that a GPSr in your pocket, or are you glad to hear from me? Lil Devil http://www.lildevil.org/images/smiley/lildevil.gif Hehe actaully... yes its a GPS. This Isn't rocket science...
  23. Ive been cache hunting since October of 2000 (didn't have many to choose from then, 7 in our state at the time). I didn't hit 100 till June 2002. I should hit 200 tommorow! Most found in one day? 5... but tommorow we plan to hit 12! This Isn't rocket science...
