  1. No mosquito repellent or heat as I know they can be harmful. May be the acid in perspiration but anyway, the rubber choosen must be able to withstand this kind of aggression. What I would like to know if other older 60 series experienced similar issues. Not all rubber mfgd are equal and some are really crappy ! To test just requires to try with the nail to see if the rubber peels of.
  2. I noticed that the band between the antenna and the top was split, tried to glue it to no avail. In fact I noticed the rubber became spongy and would crumble ! The antenna housing and case top rubber is easily scratched ! My GPS is three years old, has given about 2000 hours of good service in a normal environment, no chemical, no direct sun exposure. I can't believe this ! I have seen cheap rubber stuff but on such an expensive device !!! Am I just unlucky ? I have not yet contacted Garmin, anyway it is out of warranty Anyone else noticed the same issue ?
  3. Great, real cheap, just need to learn Russian first !
  4. It works with Egnos sat ! Got the D's but don't see any real improvement in accuracy. Stays within specs, around 4m - 6 m. May be altitude is better bu did not made a real study. So I don't bother and don't turn it on.
  5. A release mainly to correct errors introduced in a previous release ??? This is becoming serious ! Anyway, feel free to volunteer and post your results !
  6. The 24K scale has been defined so as one inch on the map represents 2000 feet on the ground. Now how many miles is it ? In fact it is typical of the tricky stuff you got to do to accommodate an archaic and illogical measurement system. A maps scale is just the ratio of the real world measure to its representation on the paper. With a scale of 1/100000 for ex. , 1 cm on the map represents 1000 meter, that is 1km (any 10 year old kid and above knows that). Topo map normally use 1/25000 scale, 1cm represents 250 m. That means that on the same sheet of paper, you can print more details than with a 1/100000 scale but you cover less ground. With US topo paper map, I found it easier to use the same logic but as the scale is 1/24000, 1 cm represents 240m, beats to play with a strange inch rule with fractions isn't ? Now on a GPS screen, scale really doesn't mean much and the real meaning is that the 1/25000 scale has more details in it. Now if you want to have some fun, look at the scales used in the US building industry !
  7. This is exactly the way to do it ! Funny how people can blame others for their lack of proper care and precautions.
  8. As a matter of fact, the whole world, most of it a competitor if not an enemy of the the US. Lots of foreign companies making big money thanks to the US taxpayer funded GPS system. Fact is that a world without GPS is hard to imagine now. May be the US should subtract the cost from its contribution to the infamous United Nations funding ?
  9. Looks like chinese clone of the Eneloop. They don't even give the specs not even the capacity and have only AA, AAA ? Chinese marketing discovering the benefit of selling Green to collect greens ! I prefer to stick with brand name that even when made in China are supposed to be built according to strict specifications, too much crap around these days. A leaky or venting battery can ruin your valuable equipment.
  10. The idea behind "cistes" is not to require any kind of technological and expensive pieces of hardware like a GPS. It is sort of a "socialist " version of geocaching ! So even poor people can afford to play "cistes" and to avoid social unrest because of jealousy, the whole set up must be "cheap" !
  11. Got similar issue, out of warranty. I would be glad to locate a non functioning 60 just for the case and button !
  12. Litium-Ion batteries have a limited life span of 3 to 5 years. Usage has little effect on it but if they stay too long in storage and the voltage drops below a certain value, they are dead for good. So if you buy a replacement, make sure it is of recent manufacture.
  13. Never heard about a limit. Of course if you carry a few kilo of them you will raise some suspicion ! True that it is a real hassle these days. You can't take a 0.5l bottle of water but they don't even check if your laptop is a real one by checking if it works !!!! All these security measures are a joke, more to appease the traveller than anything else. Fortunately they rely on other clues. I recently flew Ryanair and they asked me to turn off my GPS ! I tried to explain it was just a receiver but it was in vain. So I asked if I had to turn off my electronic watch too !!!
  14. I remember the time when women were not allowed to step in an english pub !
  15. Keep in mind, your are NOT allowed to put FOOD in a cache !
  16. The US does not have a generous state welfare system that pumps huge amount of money leading to extravagant taxes !! In Francefor ex., you can be poor, sick, illegal, unwilling to work and get free lodging, medical care etc.. Someone got to pay for it no ? French made products are even cheaper in the US than in France !
  17. Just curious--- do brownies baked in a centigrade oven taste better than brownies baked in a Fahrenheit oven? If so, anyone want my old oven (Can you imagine the landfills scatted with perfectly good working ovens)? And will anyone help me convert all my recipes? Ok- Now for real--- I am traveling to Germany in June. Will my American based GPS work 'over there'? I would like to grab a few TB's while there (and maybe even bring some along). Why do you think english and american cookings are the worst in the world ?
  18. ...which is also the reason the French started driving on the right - and I can't see you all complaining about that and demanding change...!!! (everybody used to drive on the left, as most drivers were right handed, so sat with their strongest arm by the brake lever - so most carts and carriages were built with the brake on the right. Napoleon decided to change all that....the rest is history) Yes, this is true but the whole world followed the french way this time, drive on the right, except England and its empire and Japan !!! Note that in Europe, train did not change and are running on the left !!! Anayway, America is "inching" toward metric, no much choice ! I live in the US for five years and I like to buid stuff, beleive me, even using inch based beam and plank, I could do better than anyone with their yardstick ! By the way, I realised a beam 4 by 6 inch is NOT 4 by 6 really ! As for maps, metric of course, I just determined the scale and even if its was an odd number, I could manage faster with my metric ruler, than anyone usings thing like one inch equal approximately 1/4 of a mile, typical US scale ! The truth is that very few americans are used to their own system, they don't know how these units relates, eg. one how many acre in a square mile ??? How many feet in a mile ? Basic things that ten year old kids taught in metric knows like read a map, compute distance, area on it, compute weight knowing volume and density etc... many American adults can't. And they are the very same claiming they are used to ! On my GPS, I even use decimal degree, which is the becoming the standard too.
  19. Only road sign and speed limits are in miles in the UK because of some backward politicians that assumed the Brits were as stupid as they were and not able to switch ! Funny, Brits don't have any trouble when they drive on the continent !
  20. You made me spit tea on my monitor. The metric system IS more gooder than the old system we use here in the States. The main reason we resist this truly splendid method is because it was invented by the French. (What? You know that's true. Admit it.) Inventend by the French is only partially true, preliminary work had been done already in the UK. The French revolution started it all because they wanted to get rid of all things past and have "reason" drive the society instead of religion or other beliefs. The real promotion has been done by Napoleon who imposed it for the sake of standardisation in the Empire. Uneducated people were reluctant to change initialy. Scientists in the US wanted it for more than 150 years ! Currently more than 40% of US products are designed in metric. It saved the US automobile industry in the late 70's. But now, the outcome is simple, companies not going metric will have a hard time to survive if they do bussines outside of the US. It is not just a matter of logic, it simplify designs, saves money, reduce errors, make you more competitive. To have stopped the US metrication process has been a real failure.
  21. And by the way Garmin uses American english, what about REAL english ? Industani english ? Welsh ? Scottish ? Irish ??? Get rid of language and use pictograms instead !
  22. Great, you should be the 15th to sign then. :-) Thanks! Same for french, most of the time, words or sentences are longer then in english. It is why I prefer english, so I waste less time reading ! On the other hand, get rid of inch, feet, miles almost nobody really use anymore !
  23. I think this is an attempt by technologists to get rid of idiots ! Our society is becoming more and more complex, we are too many on this planet competing for scarces ressources, even clean water and fresh air ! Some culling is becoming necessary as war even famine or disease can't cope with the task ! Not the first time GPS have been accused to be indirectly the cause of accident, be it by misdriection or simply distraction ! Nothing new since the fisrt fingers crushed by a hammer refusing to hit a nail.
  24. AA batteries is the way to go, you can share with your GPS and Camera ! Headlights are great too especially if you end up field dressing a deer or boar at dusk ! Avoid LED lights with triple AAA, they don't have electronic to regulate the output current/voltage. 123 are darn expensives
