  1. Get good NiMH but above all get a GOOD charger. As a rule BAN chargers that charge in pair, ONLY independent channels charging can charge evenly the batteries. In pair, one will be overcharged before termination and that will kill the battery real quick. LaCrosse and Maha are good one.
  2. Feet, inches, miles ???? So if you work in 1/128 inch you will be more accurate ? Oh by the way, which feet do you use ? The survey one or the one defined according to the metric standard ? When I see "feet" and "accuracy" in the same post, I laugh ! And you can pile up commercial grade GPS, you won't get more "accuracy".
  3. Maybe we older folks still know how to read maps, compute distance, bearings using various coordinate systems, solve puzzle and above all dare to venture outside of the house in the real world using technology our generation dreamed then invented and don't use it to recreate a virtual reality.
  4. The GPS was NEVER lost ! Its owner, yes, and most probably still is. Any missing person reported lately ? Send a search and rescue team ASAP (the recovered GPS can give an approximate location)! There are still honest people ! OK, the crooks, they all moved to Washingtion DC !
  5. Think about the kids ! For them it is a treasure hunt. It has its purpose. his game is for all ages not old ages only !
  6. GPS directions are given by a woman arn't they ? So !
  7. The box size may not be the issue but what makes a bad cache is the lack of subtlety in the way it is hidden, leading to for ex., the combing of hundreds of square if not cubic meters of leaves, bark, soil and other debris ! Personally I am no mole and if my brain is of no use, I pass the cache. It is why I don't log a lot !
  8. You are in the same boat as Iowa. You can count the minorities on one had at any given time. Even in the cities. I know the perception of Ohio as a mostly white farming state is possible. In reality, we are far from it... White 53.36% Black or African American 43.13% American Indian and Alaska Native .3% Asian .65% Hispanic or Latino(of any race) 1.58% Only 0.3% of Native left. I wonder what is their opinion and if they too are obsessed by multiculturalism, equal opportunities, minorities etc... Do they still feel guilty they opposed that not so long ago ?
  9. Lot of young people think we old guys are not technology minded. They forget all what they are using today has been developed/implemented by people most of them retired based on theories and ideas often older ! What annoy me is that most of them are just users, don't understand the internals, the logic and yet they think they know. Yes, we dreamed this world but I wonder what is coming next.
  10. Or use a VOiP app, Google Voice, etc... I'll buy one if this rumor is true, as soon as my iPhone contract expires. My iPhone bill is $53/month including voice plan -- but I use it far more as a PDA than as a phone. If I could just buy a data plan for $25 or so each month like my step-daughter does for her iPad, that would be a good deal for me. AND -- oh, this is the good bit -- a 3G iPad isn't locked to a carrier and can be used internationally. Just get a 3G SIM from whatever carrier you want overseas. That would mean a lot to international travelers. I really hope this is true. And you expect the "carriers" do not know that and will not make sure their revenue is not affected by changing the "plans" ? The same provide the "voice" and "data" service. Besides it is all data, voice and video having a real time constraint. People who have to worry about are stand alone GPS mfgd like Garmin, Magellan ... Why do you think Garmin "invented" Opencaching ? The consumer market is not for them anymore.
  11. Affirmative action geocaching. Now, that's more like it! Another thing that I've seen a number of times, is young couple with kids. They cache for a year or two until the kids realize that it really isn't cool, and to become old enough to care about that. Or, a young couple starts caching together, starts a family, and finds that they simply don't have time for it anymore. OR, a young family finds that driving their kids to soccer games, little league and so on just takes too much time and doesn't leave any for geocaching. I wish geocaching existed when my kids were young ! Nice way to justify going to the countryside, more fun and healthier than to stay in front of the TV or computer ! As for the "affirmative" part, may I suggest you set up a committee to define a way to attract minorities and eventually subsidize this activity ?
  12. ??? And how do you do to compute/convert in inches, feet, yards and miles ? It is even messier than degree min seconds By the way, decimal degree is the way to go, it is the standard used for storage and transmission. Too bad, Geocaching did not start with this format and use this hybrid format "decimal minutes".
  13. Easy caches calls for easy comments. Why the finder should spend more time writing the log than the placer has to design and set it up ? On the other hand, when a challenging cache is found, it may happen the finder is so exhausted, he can barely write and so just put down: TFTC
  14. Caches not often found are usualy the one requiring the most effort, physical and intellectual. The most interesting ones as far as I am concerned. In fact I wish one could include in the search criteria the difficulty level.
  15. Good marketing indeed ! Make a commodity scarce, accessible to a few selected individuals so they believe they are the chosen ones, will ensure a flood of customers once at last, they can join ! ANyway, good to have some competition for Facebook, just to have the banksters bit the dust considering the ridiculous value they gave to FB !
  16. I agree, the mod should "straighten" these threads by "merging" them !
  17. May be the crawling guy had just been half eaten by the bear ?
  18. Get a handheld GPS for Geocaching and keep your TomTom as it does the job for the car. Non integrated dedicated car GPS are finished, no future for them. To use them for geocaching is PITA. GPS are now supplied with the car or integrated with smartphones. Smartphones can do it all and more, just they are not as rugged and lack autonomy compared to a handheld GPS but they are the future, leaving handheld in a niche market. I use a 60CX for hiking, hunting, geocaching, even sometimes for the car. But for true car navigation, the smartphone has replaced the Garmin Nuvi for 6 months now.
  19. How things would be simpler if the only standard in use was simply decimal degree (standard in fact in the way data are stored or transmitted electronically) and UTM (and metric for all the rest too of course)!
  20. I wonder how many times people experiencing GPS temporary loss of satellites have simply been affected by these jammers !
  21. Wow ! Bad news indeed ! I tried to do the same with my vintage 60CX and got squeaks too ! Wait, it is my arthritis. OK, so no chance it will become a fire ball
  22. Geee, and people who thought that England was not invaded because of the food ! In fact it's because the invaders would have been lost ! Strange coord system, inch, feet fathom etc.... Decimal degree and UTM should be the only standards. In fact almost done.
  23. Just delete the redundant log, point ! Why send an email and almost apologize ? If he has a problem with that, he is the one who has to ask why ! It is common sense to log a find only once. One has to edit the "find" entry or write a note if necessary.
