  1. Oops. It's a Samsung Galaxy Portal. Not sure which OS it's running on
  2. I eventually crumbled and got myself a new phone with a built in gps. I'm still trying to figure out how to phone people on the thing but I was wondering if any of you folks could advise me on the best free application for the gps function? I will still be using my trusty Etrex when out on planned cache days, but thought it would be handy to have the phone set up for some impromptu hunts Any advice would be muchly appreciated Apologies if this topic has already been covered before (which I'm sure it has). The above mentioned phone is now ringing and I'm pressing every button and yelling hello at it! Now I'm barred from the local library...apparently people who shout swear words at phones aren't welcome
  3. I might try that in Newcastle town centre....probably get a bottle of 'Broon' stotted off my head
  4. That's dedication for you......just beware he doesn't try to trip you with a crutch so he can get to the cache first!
  5. There's a lot of caches placed around Kielder......should keep you busy for a full day. Great place to visit too!
  6. Changed my browser to Firefox and have had no more problems with the site.....everything loads much quicker than IE too. Thanks for the advice.
  7. Is anyone having problems with the Geocaching.com site. I cannot search for caches, view caches from my home coordinates etc. Whenever I click a link/run a search I get the message 'windows cannot open the site - operation aborted' or something along those lines. My pc is all up to date with security software etc, and I haven't installed anything new recently. Just wondering if anyone else is having these glitches before I go all Rambo on the pc!
  8. Congratulations on the finds. Enjoy the addiction
  9. Apologies for the thread hijack Is there a specific name given to the downloaded co ords once they are on the gps (etrex)? At the moment I put them in by hand and simply number them.
  10. Thank you for all the replies. Hopefully, all the information and websites supplied will help me when looking at future cache locations I never knew it could be this complicated
  11. Hi all, Is there a difference between a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Nature Reserve area when it comes to hiding caches. I know you need permission to hide on a SSSI but what about Nature Reserves? I've found a spot for a cache close to my home but it's coming up as a Nature Reserve on the Magic map. I've looked on the SSSI Natural England website and the area isn't showing up on their list of SSSI's. Any help or advice on these matter would be greatly appreciated and probably save me wasting a lot of time when looking for future cache sites
  12. I hope I have posted this in the right forum. We are wanting to do a few caches around the Kielder area this weekend but it seems that a lot of the campsites are fully booked. The campsites we have rang are; Kielder Campsite Border Forest (Cottonshopeburnfoot) Bellingham Campsite Demesne Farm Campsite (Bellingham) Stonehaugh Campsite We were wondering if any of you fine people know of any other campsites in the area and if so could you let us know. We don't need anything fancy, just somewhere with toilet and shower facilities. Thanks in advance
  13. Got chased by some cows yesterday. As I walked on the footpath I could see the leader staring at me. He rallied his troops together and they started towards me. At first it was just an inquisitive approach but once they smelt the burger I'd had for lunch they wanted blood! As they started running towards me I realised that all I had for a weapon was my now soiled underpants. I quickly whipped them off and faced those rotters down. I was like David facing up to that big bully Goliath. Standing, feet firmly planted in the mud, I swung those underpants with all the force I could muster. Bits of my previous fear flew everywhere. And as the cows were getting splattered by pieces of brown shrapnel I made my way to the cache. BTW I think it would be a good idea to keep a clean pair of underwear in some of the caches located near cow pastures.
  14. Thanks NordicMan We were really pleased to find all the ones we went for. There are a few more in the area that we never had time to look for.......to be honest we were just too tired! We can't wait to hide a cache ourselves, but for the moment we are more than happy to just look for them I can't wait until the next hunt We CITO'd too
  15. Woo hoo we went out over the weekend and found 8 caches! I can see that this game can become very addictive.......I thought I was going to have to pull my wife out of a tree stump by her ankles at one point.
  16. Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to go for the eTrex for the moment and maybe upgrade later on. Buying it tomorrow so will hopefully have my first find during the weekend..... that's if I figure out how to work it!
  17. Hi, I've been interested in geocaching for a long time now and I've finally decided to take the plunge and buy a GPS. I don't want to spend a lot of money so I've been looking online for a cheap unit. The ones that I have found in my price range are the Garmin Geko 201 (£76) and the Garmin eTrex H (£65). I have looked at the reviews and I'm swayed to go with th eTrex one on account of the high-sensitivity receiver and the longer battery life. However, I would like to ask the opinions of people who visit this site before I opt for one. Thank you in advance for any advice given.
  18. I have a tent I'd be happy to lend to you. It's only a little 2 man tent but it does the job, and it's quite easy to put up
