  1. So I guess I'm the first to find it (FTF).

    Yes.

Can one claim FTF only after the publish?

    Yes.

I once claimed FTF after actually doing it as intended. There was a puzzle cache that was based on finding 10 other caches in a series and using information gleaned from them. But the puzzle had a bug, so it turned out you could solve it without visiting the other caches. My buddy went right for it and claimed FTF. Although I'd also solved it, I grabbed the last 2 in the series before I went to find the final the next day. Then I gave my buddy grief in my log about short circuiting the cache. And the CO gave us both credit for FTF in the description! Of course, another day and our two roles might have been reversed...

I would ONLY accept the one as FTF who logs the cache first. No matter why that person was able to do so! Tough luck if the co is doing a bad job with his puzzle or if with the hide itself. First is first and everyone coming later can't be first, too ;)

  2. Hi!

While discussing the historical reasons for Northern Ireland we thought at least the statistics will get wrong then.

A person who just finds a cache in Northern Ireland will be rewarded for finding a cache in the Country of Ireland and not the United Kingdom. If you check the European map in the statistics the wrong country will show up. Even if I can (partly) understand the reasons for having Ulster being part of Ireland this seems to be wrong for me. Statistics are pretty important for quite some people so having a wrong country might not be what someone wants. And if someone found caches in both the Republic of Ireland AND Northern Ireland but not the rest of the UK one country is missing!

So even if the cache shows Ulster, Ireland the cache should still count for the UK.

    Thanks,

    Christian

  3. Hi!

Our network support guy suggested using a ping with bigger packets. In the range of ~ 1400 Bytes as this is close to the packet size of standard DSL routers. He said this probably shows better if there's a big amount of packet losses and speed issues then.

And what we've found out so far in Germany is that mainly Deutsche Telekom seems to be affected. The biggest number of problems happens at their customers DSL lines. Additionally it most of the time happens at times of bigger traffic like weekend evening. Lots of people using the Internet then and speed drops dramatically.

I do use Vodafone and I don't have issues at all!

So lets hope the providers will finally figure out what causes these issues and solve it then!

  4. I've never understood how an regular event can't be anything but a 1 difficulty. Even it's on top of Mount Everest, it's still a 1 difficulty but would be a 5 for the terrain. Or 500 feet in the ocean in scuba, it's still a 1 difficulty.

Have you ever NOT been able to find an event once you reach ground zero?????

Over here in Germany we see that a bit different. For us an event can be way more than just MEETING people. An event can have a special reason why it takes place. And guess what, there were some where it's really hard to attend! We had some events where the intent was to eat some crazy stuff like this:

    Surstömming

Believe me, EATING this is really close to D5! And we usually only accept(ed) ATTENDED logs from people who ATTENDED EATING what was served.

As the rules for events have been changed quite some people don't really like these changes as they allow logs from people just hanging around. I don't really get the need to disallow logging requirements for events! If I decide to attend such an event I usually know what to expect. So why should the owner accept logs from watchers!? They could also attend real D1/T1 events instead of these special ones!

  5. Hi!

It's not a flaw, you have Found it! logs on them, so they're shown as found, and they still increment in your find count. The map can't show both, so it shows Found over owned.

To alter that, delete your "find" logs (I wouldn't).

Besides that FOR ME this as a flaw, that's exactly what I'm saying. I would simply do it the other way round and let win OWNED over FOUND. And I definitely will NOT delete the found logs especially as one of them was our first geocache ever ;-)

  6. Hi!

Tried to find a geocache (GC2W9KQ - OPERATION RED DAWN) by keyword search at the "Hide and Seek A Geocache" page. But no result has been shown! Keyword has been "OPERATION RED". Seems to be an error in my eyes.

  7. Hi!

It doesn't work for me in leaflet mode, but it does with the Google Maps. But there the old bug came back where the icons from the PQ result still are shown after switching back to normal search view.

    Bye,

    Christian

  8. Hi!

Do you have an ignore list? Anything on that ignore list will not be delivered by a PQ.

I do, but this definitely isn't the problem here. As there still is the bug that PQs will be shown after switching back to normal search mode I can see that there are dozens if not hundreds of caches along the rout that would fit but are not included in this PQ. It's really a simple one asking for every Traditional, EC, Virtual I haven't found and is active. So I guess it really is an issue with the total number of caches that would fit. These are more than 1000 and "usually" youd should see 1000 then and not "just" 960.

    Bye,

    Christian

  9. Hi!

I just created a nice route and wanted to get a PQ for this route. Everything seemed to work fine and the PQ delivers ~960 caches. But I wondered that there were pretty big holes within the output and I have seen many caches that didn't make it into the PQ even if they were very close to the route. So I guess that there must be a mistake somewhere in the routine that creates these PQs. It COULD be because with my settings of this PQ there were way more than 1000 caches that would fit. But why does the PQ just deliver 960 caches and not 1000 then?

  10. Hi!

With the recent re-working of maps, the Cache Description bubble that normally displays when you mouse over a cache symbol has now become flakey. I'm running Win 7 / Chrome, which is normally totally reliable. However, if I change to one of the non-default map displays, like OpenCycleMaps, and scroll in/scroll out, it stops doing any of the mouse over expands -- which makes it so that I can't get details for any of the caches on the screen.

To fix, I normally just start over again by refreshing screen, move the map back to the location I was just looking at, and then everything will display properly. But if I change map displays again, especially if I scroll in / out, it will stop working again.

Makes it very difficult to work, as I'm constantly having to change back to the default (undesired) map display in order to get information, and then go back to OpenCycleMap to get terrain topology.

I was going to report this myself, once I'd figured out why it is happening.

What I've figured out so far is that normally, when you move the mouse over each map tile, the web page fires a request to the geocaching.com servers for data about any caches that may be in the area covered by that tile, and uses it to pop up the cache titles and descriptions. The URL for the data it asks for is based on the URL of the map tile. It is supposed to use the map tiles from the geocache icon layer but from time to time it uses the tiles from the base map instead. This means that the web page starts asking Mapquest or OpenStreetMap for cache details, rather than Geocaching.com

What I've not yet figured out is precisely why this happens. It seems to be related to adding or removing layers on the map, which happens when you zoom, change map type, or add different overlays (like filtering out your finds). However, it doesn't happen every time you do one of these things...

For ME it happens about EVERY time! Some icons do work and other don't. So in the end I ALWAYS need to reload the map to have the other caches working which is a bit annoying ;-)

    Bye,

    Christian

  11. Hi!

No, we haven't changed how we handle logs from phones yet as we don't want to add another variable to the mix that we would need to account for when we implement the overarching changes.

Could it be you're talking about 2 completely different things?

I live in Germany and what I don't like THAT much is that the default date always is based on PST and not on MY time zone. And I guess that THIS would be an easy fix and doesn't relate to any databse changes at all...

  12. Hi Raine,

We are looking into this issue.

    -Raine

another issue still exists for me (using FF 12.0 on Windows 7 x64):

    Map -> Default Google Map

    1. I chose a PQ and let it be shown on the map

    2. I click on the "Search" button and it shows all the caches again, BUT the ones from the PQ still are visible with their big icons even if zoomed out quite far.

Can only be reset by reloading the full page.

It works just fine with the Leaflet maps!

    Bye,

    Christian

  13. Hi!

We have been heads-down working on fixing some things we discovered with yesterday's site release and have just finished a re-release correcting those issues. The release notes posted in the OP still apply. Thank you for your patience and please let us know if you run into any problems.

I am using Firefox and the new maps since the update and I experienced some issues while using the PQs within the map!

After chosing one of the PQs the doesn't seem to be "deleted" after switching back to standard mode OR another PQ. So they simply add up to the new search which only works wrong with the new maps. The old maps still work fine.

  14. Hi!

Today I noticed that when you hover your mouse over a cache icon in the map, the popup shows the cache name three times (see picture). And also caches in the ignore list are show, but here this popup show the cache name only twice.

    GCMap.20120303.png

I've tested this in 10.0.2, both with grease monkey enabled and disabled and can also replicate the error in IE and Opera. Testing this I did notice if you are NOT logged in, the popup thingy shows the cache name only once (as it's supposed to do).

    Cheers,

    Mr. Terratin

Quite the same here, only difference: The name only shows up twice all the time! Using Firefox 10.0.2. on Windows 7 x64.

  15. Hi!

For starters, a lot of people are griping at GSP about this change and seem to think that the switch in maps is supposed to be an "improvement". It's not. It's simply GSP's business reaction to the change in licensing the map data from Google.

    ...(deleted lots of stuff)...

    You're right and you're wrong ;-)

You're right because just bashing doesn't help.

You're wrong because the so called new maps were already pretty old now and still having issues here and there.

For me the new maps just partly do work. Speed seems to be at least ok now. Not sure if they've changed something or if it is just a lower load now... What I still don't like is the visibility of the caches in the lower zoom steps (when the caches are just small dots). It's REALLY hard to find them on the screen :-( And it's some more issues for me here and there that doesn't really make me feel comfortable with the new maps.

I would still prefer using the old maps even with the limitation to 500 caches. I like them WAY more than the new ones...

    Bye,

    Christian

  16. Hi!

Ouch. Just look at the differences:

    mapsez.jpg

Ouch? I see all the same information (if not more), with different colours and some labels not visible at that zoom level. Besides the lack of a scale, what would you wish was in the lower one that's in the upper one? All I see is a very well-mapped OSM area. Kudos to the Dutch OSM mappers.

First of all it's exactly the different colours that I personally don't like. Together with the new icons of the new map it makes it close to impossible to SEE the caches on the map if there are just a few and if it is a large scale :-( This has been solved WAY better in the old maps and with the google maps.

For sure I do understand the reason behind the move to OSM but I would still like to get back the old maps ;-)

  17. Hi!

I think there were some great fixes like the "1mb or the width/height is greater than 2048 pixels" photo uploading relaxation and the choice to not/view recently viewed caches.

Hear, hear! There were some outstanding upgrades that came out in this update, but they've been completely over-shadowed by the kerfuffle over the map change.

Hmmm, given the fact that I was STILL using the OLD map and that I don't have or want an iPad I can't see anything of value for ME! I still don't like the new map at all. I dislike the coloring scheme and I hate the way the icons are looking.

So please tell me what outstanding upgrade you do mean that I might have been missing?

    Bye,

    Christian

P.S.: At least the speed of the maps seem to be "ok" now. But let's see how quick it is at the time of day also the US users are awake...

  18. Hi!

    Added:

    • Support for tablets like the iPad and other mobile devices

    • Display of only the caches in a Pocket Query instead of all caches at once

    • Faster tooltips, at any zoom level

    Removed:

    • Google Maps (find out why)

I don't care about the removal of the Google Maps, that's ok as you've found a replacement. But I DO CARE about the final removal of the OLD style map. I'm trying to load a PQ on the map while writing this email and guess what, it's still loading...

The one and only part I do like from the new map is the size. Finally full screen on my 30 inch display. But that's definitely the ONLY thing. All the rest is way worse that before...

    1. Speed, slower than a snail now... (Map loading for ~5 MINUTES now and still not all the tiles have been showing up :-( )

    2. The old map has been showing way nicer (and easier to see) symbols for the caches. These combined symbols aren't fun.

    3. The list! Just names now, no codes :-( Where have they been going?

    4. As far as I can see I don't have a chance to create a link to a specific PQ map as I could with the old map.

    5. Why is LETTERBOX a green type of cache? Shouldn't it be a yellow one?

That's it for the moment and by the way: STILL 9 tiles not yet loaded :-(

    Bye,

    Christian

P.S.: After trying to use the new maps I need to say that right now they are fully unusable! I'm trying to load just some caches for a small part of my home town und it is loading ~10 minutes now and STILL not even halft the tiles. Caches just popping up now. No chance to really use that!

P.P.S.: Found another bug :-( The new map right now is showing ALL caches and is NOT showing my finds any longer :-(

  19. Hi!

[*]Add Paging to logs on Geocache Listings - Revamped the way logs are displayed on the Cache page. Added Tabs for viewing your logs; your friend’s logs or just all logs.

That doesn't work well for me :-(

    Windows 7 x64, IE9:

    1. If I want to all the logs it needs forever as I alway have to do PageDown until I finally reach the end of the logs which might last some time. Ctrl-End also doesn't really help :-( The old "Show all logs" link simply would be highly appreciated!

    2. The tab view looks completely ugly now. Formatting is broken. I do have this tab view and each log first shows the cacher with avatar and find count and BELOW that there's this vertical ruler and the log. To the right there's another ruler going all the way down and on top of that there's the log date and the "View Log" link.

Maps: The Beta map still sucks (Pocket Queries are unusable and the new icons are hard to see). The old map also is close to unusable since one of the last updates as filtering doesn't work any longer :-( PLEASE fix this instead of introducing new stuff!

Page width: We still got stuck with these narrow pages :-( My 2 screens are 2560*1600 each and I only can make use of less than half of them :-(

Challenges: As I don't care about them I don't care what has been done there ;-)

Gallery Images: If I want to view the gallery images I need to do this one by one. I can't just click onto a pic to get to the next or previous one as I can with the ones from a single log.

    Bye,

    Christian

  20. Hi!

    New map dislikes:

    - how cache symbols are shown. I do like the old style (symbol in white box) way more. The new symbols are too small in my eyes and very hard to see.

    .......

The white boxes covered up too much of the adjoining terrain. I'd actually like the cache symbol to be even smaller. Remember the little red dot on Topozone?

O.k., might be I need to say something more about that :-)

I'm fine with small symbols in general but in this case they don't really are in big contrast to the map. That's why I like the old style way more. And I also absolutely don't like one type for symbol for different types of caches...

    Bye,

    Christian
