  1. Some are finally showing up within 50 miles of me, but I feel your pain Uperdooper.
  2. He gave the snake 3 warning shots - isn't that close enough?
  3. I had a similar encounter with geese at this one Strike @ Maple Isle
  4. This is yet another "tick" thread that makes my skin crawl just by reading it. I can feel them crawling all over me now, even though I am at work sitting in air-conditioned comfort. My friend and I went to a cache recently and checked ourselves for ticks before reentering the car, but when we sat down, I saw he had two on his pant leg. I think they must have been hiding near the car where we did our check, then jumped on him after they heard us say "All Clear". I don't think they were already in the car.
  5. There is a cache in my area called Applesauce?? No, not applesauce by Tiwica that has quite a few stages (coords on tags posted throughout the area) along with "teaser tags" that are really annoying to find (instead of a coordinate tag). I had tons of fun on this one though, so it was worth it. So far I believe I have found the most teaser tags - just 2 more to go.
  6. I know I will probably get flamed for this, but there are a lot of people who would like to find a YJTB so they can sign up for the contest - maybe sending them to foreign countries while the "official" contest is still going on is not a good idea. We have not seen any here yet in SW Michigan, though there are a few that are circulating north of us. So far I have noticed that a couple of them have already disappeared and one person is taking the one they found to Florida. I guess I'll just have to be patient.
  7. When I did my first cache, I was living in Mt Pleasant, MI (zip 48858) and there were only 3 caches available within 25 miles, so I kind of let it go. When I moved to Paw Paw, MI (49079) last October I got back into it and now there are tons of them in the Mt Pleasant area - it just takes a little time sometimes for it to catch on. I wish I had placed some caches in Mt Pleasant to "prime the pump", now all the good spots there are taken (for my friends). I bet if you give it a year or so, you will see lots more caches show up. I'd try to get more of your friends involved and make a contest out of who can set up the best cache. Oh well, just my $0.02.
  8. MacIslandgirl - I believe there is a geocaching event in Alpena for northeast Michigan geocachers. You can go to the MIGO website at Michigan Geocaching Organization to find out more about it. Later in the month there is one in south east Michigan and a camping one around the Grand Rapids/Ionia area I believe. I live in the southwest near Kalamazoo and have been caching on a few dates. I think I've even gotten one person hooked on it now too. I'd suggest you just grab a friend and take them with you.
  9. Within 50 miles of Paw Paw Michigan there are 335, within 100 miles there are 1109. I still have a lot to go.
  10. Maybe he stores his mints in a catheter bag?
  11. I think the idea of having a different icon for micro caches (like virtual, mystery, etc have) would help out a lot. Then if people don't want to do micros, it would be easier to avoid them. Just my .02.
  12. US Army - 1990-1994 - (98C) Signals Intelligence Analyst Presidio of Monterey (CA) Goodfellow AFB, TX Camp Humphreys, Korea (last 2 years in 3d MI BN) I was going to be stationed at Ft Drum, NY after my first year in Korea, so asked to stay overseas, then found out the orders were changed to work at Ft Meade, but oh well - it was a lot of fun.
  13. I have been geocaching with with other people and if they are with me, I usually get us in the general area, then they find the cache - or vice-versa. I guess its just working as a team. We both log.
  14. I am still sort of new here, but I don't remember anything that listed out other people's names that were close to the one I had chosen when I signed up. Maybe it was an honest coincedence for the name thing. I know I wouldn't want to change my name now if someone was named Team Golem3, even if they were within 100 miles of me. As for the deleted log, maybe it was a mistake, or maybe because the names are so similar, they might have thought they accidently logged their own cache (yeah I know that sounds unlikely ). Anyhew, I am sure both groups can work it out if they discuss it reasonably and if not, let geocaching.com mediate. Just my .02.
  15. I was out with a fellow cacher (rhinogirl) and a muggle came up to us (well his two dogs came up to us first) and asked what we were up to. He seemed pretty cool, so I told him and he said he'd heard about it before and asked some questions, so I gave him a quick overview. He seemed fairly interested, so I hope I have turned someone else onto this activity. Maybe he'll hide a cache for us to find in the future. My thought is not to keep it secret (just the locations of the caches secret) and get as many people hooked on caching as possible.
  16. Maybe its because I'm new still, but I like trading. If there is nothing but junk, I'll try to leave something better if I have anything good. Sometimes I leave a couple of things as I'm not sure what is as valuable to other people as it is to me. One weird thing I found recently though was liquid paper. I keep it in my backpack as a quick pick-me-up ... Just Kidding, but I wonder if I could use it to remove a tick (at least it would hide it). Also found a cache with a granola bar (Oats & Honey mmm my favorite) in it, but took it as it had been in there a while. Also found mints and a bunch of jaw breakers rolling loose in the cache. I don't know who'd eat em.. ... Well, okay, I had one of the mints, but I had "trail breath". Sorry for ramblin'.
  17. Marky, Maybe for one of your caches, you could leave another ammo can (or a gift certificate to a nearby army/navy surplus store) nearby as the FTF prize with a little note. If they don't want to go for it, they don't have to, but they have the opportunity. I can see the other side though about people putting out lame caches if forced to do so, but maybe your idea will inspire an even better cache than your own. I am still looking for a good place for my first cache, but maybe I'll try this idea myself..
  18. I saw this one as I was flipping through channels and called my friends to let them know. I kind of thought they did a spoiler when they showed the tree and the mushroom the cache was under. One thing that they asked me about after this was if there were any caches at Asylum Lake where they found the dead woman.
  19. Not married yet, but I don't think I would ask for someone's hand unless it had a GPSr in it occasionally. Down with GAG!
  20. I am a noob to this, but I like my sneakers. Maybe after I hit a few more caches, I'll upgrade to more rugged trails and the boots to match. So far I haven't had any problems. Right now, it would be like buying a 4x4 for driving in the city for me as most of the trails in my area are in great shape. Good thread though, now I know what to look for. Thanks everyone.
  21. I am going to give my 4-legged buddy a big hug when I get home. Sorry for your loss.
