  1. Discovering is allowed, if you discovered the item properly (NOT fishing for numbers or taking them off pictures, AND be sure the numbers you entered are the right ones...bugs sometimes are improperly discovered/found by mistakenly putting in the wrong number and getting a different traveler than you have/saw), you should be allowed this action. The person who deleted your log may want to rethink their actions.

NO, taking numbers off pictures is NOT allowed and I would delete any logs like this (after contacting that person). I can't allow this action or I run the risk of my traveler being locked!! It isn't that I disagree (although I do) it affects me personally.

Plenty of other ways for a handicap cacher to participate!! Hide handicap friendly caches, visit events, parent TBs of your own etc...

    edit for expanding thought!!

  2. What BD??? Calling a MUGGLE a jerk is being rude to others in the forums??? I doubt that any muggles who read that would have taken exception :D

I wasn't aware that calling a muggle a jerk was being rude, as well, I doubt muggles are members of this sport (or I truly HOPE they aren't) and would read this thread! Muggles have been called MUCH worse by others with far more posts than me....sorry if I offended anyone with that!!

Thank you Lostguy for your views on Tommy!! HAPPY CACHING!!! You are right about the need for more respectful and kind cachers...I try to follow Tommy's ways with writing all that visit our caches or moves our travelers. My way of bettering this sport for ME, and being friendly toward others...helps to make this sport more friendly and inviting!!

  3. I was thinking the same thing C4 said...it IS a bit costly if you buy any number of those, but not as much as the $150 for the coin codes if you're only buying 10! You'd get a better deal from the codes, IF you'll be making that many...but you do have to get the coin approved! I don't know how tricky that is, but I wouldn't think it's too hard!!

I would be in for a trade too, if you make many of these!!

  4. Why not share your experiences with Tommy for us HazzMatt?? You sound like you are a fan you, must have had a good encounter??? Or did you move one of his great TBs? Share with us why YOU are such a fine supporter of this great contributor!!

Possibly YOU found one of Tommy's caches (before some JERK muggled it???) Share your experiences with Tommy, HazzMatt! Let the cache community know how well YOU appreciated Tommy's great work!!

  5. I discover sometimes...mostly coins from other friends collections...you see, if it's in a collection, the coin never moves, so grabbing it and then dropping it back or having the owner re-grab it puts miles on a coin an owner may not want miles on.

I have discovered TBs in the wild too...if I am not going in the direction the TB is, I might check out the TB (pick it up look it over to see if it needs any paperwork etc) and replace it in the same cache...sure, I COULD grab it and then re-drop it into that same cache (isn't that the same as what I did when I discovered it though?).

Just keep in mind that everyone plays this game differently, make it the game that YOU want it to be!! Most of all, KEEP IT FUN!!!

Hey Syndam...if you'd like a coin to KEEP, I'd be happy to send you one of our personal coins!! Let me know in a PM or email my gc profile address!

  6. Angelli Family...that really wasn't a "mean" post by our great mod...that was just a straight answer to what you "asked" in a way!! You are not allowed to place caches while on vacation because WHO would care for it?? Placing in Disney is not allowed as per Disney's request and the virtual is not an option anymore!

It WOULD be geo-litter as it wouldn't be allowed, therefore it would be basic trash left behind!!

You'll find MOST posters are friendly here...not all, but you MAY want to understand that a straight to the point answer doesn't always mean a "rude" answer.

  7. Could you point out where Tommy started the waves??? All I saw was where he posted that his coins were for sale...and then the posts started. They were nice to begin with..."to much, pass" or whatever...where Tommy repied with a nice thanks for your point of view.

Somewhere in there, some started getting ugly and were STILL met with nice replies...so where did Tommy "start" the waves??

I realize I haven't been here that long, but I WAS there for the sales posts...maybe I missed something, so I'll go back and read it all again just to be sure.

If you mean that he started it by going into the forums...aren't that what these are here for?? Is there a double standard being used here that I didn't know about??? Because if that's Tommy's mistake, I'm as guilty as he...my first post was to announce our new coin!

As for the owing part...I doubt Tommy thought anyone owed him ANYTHING, but I do owe him...I owe him my respect for his being such a great contributor!! I owe him for helping me to cache in a manner that brings all that find our hides or travelers a nice letter THANKING them for doing something they likely enjoyed (which also helps to build friendship with those who one may never even meet personally, making this sport that much MORE friendly). I owe Tommy my thanks for bringing us sooo many quality TBs....I guess I owe Tommy my gratitude for making this sport what it is for ME!!

And really...the only ones that have lost are US...because we lost a TRULY GREAT CONTRIBUTOR!!! Like him, disagree with him or HATE him, that is the bottom line!!

    edit for spelling...as normal!!

  8. Oh...I don't think so! If you are tired of reading this post, there ARE others out there! I didn't MAKE you come here and add to the thread, you did that for yourself!! I love the fact that some come on here to complain about our "cheering" praises of Tommy's contributions, makes me think that we are doing good here...don't let them forget!!

As for the "cheerleader" being way over here...you'd be AMAZED at the info that pours into my inbox! Little SOCAL birdies fly in all the time with nice tidbits of info!! As the post says above, many won't add to the forums because of the MOB mentality that some exhibit here!

Sounds like you were a fan HazzMatt, did you enjoy Tommy's TBs?? Were you one of those (like myself) that was crushed to hear such a great person would just quit when those that were "less than friendly" BASHED him for his GIVING?? Those that can't stand kindness try to defeat it with rudeness...but that just shows how IGNORANT they really are. A charismatic souls as yourself probably wouldn't be like that...would you??

Tell me this Dave...how much differently from anyone else were Tommy's "ways to play"?? You act like Tommy is the ONLY soul that wants to keep their TBs safe and not lost after some event or placed in some out of the way cache! Were you one of those that refused to follow his "rules" because they were "just too hard"??

From what I've read and have learned in other threads about the TBs, the owner has EVERY right to place rules on their TBs, so if that's the problem, your problem is with the PTB...not TOMMY!!!

  9. I LOVE THAT ANSWER BLUE DUECE!!!! You hit it RIGHT on the head!!!! Take ALL that you can help, leave ANY you can't but try to trade fair if possible!! No...bugs or coins AREN'T swag, that doesn't mean we have to take every one just because we can!!

Trading fair in this case may not mean equally...if you can help EVERY one of them, by all means take them all, if you happen to have one from another cache run, or if you can't be helpful to any, LEAVE them for the next cacher who may have never seen a TB/coin!!

edit to add: if those TBs/coins/Jeep happen to sit for very long, you may want to move them a bit to help them travel...idle travelers aren't traveling!!

  10. Just following what my parents tried to teach me...and follow my concience. I was there watching as Tommy was being bashed, I saw a lot of it first hand! I was also thrown insults when I jumped in to his aid...and I was abusive back to a few of them. Sometimes it's tough to be nice when everyone around you is being rude! That doesn't make it right...or better!!

I've had message after message come in since posting here and a few other threads...many just won't go into the forums and write any messages these days! Many say it's just too cruel and abusive! I would think we could all make better use of these forums than to hurl insults and spew bile hatred at someone we don't even see just because we don't have to look them in the eye or deal with any aftermath.

This is my reasoning for writing everyone that visits one of my caches or moves one of my travelers...getting to know another cacher (even only through email) means I would likely be friendlier to that person in later conversations or chance meetings either in person or virtually!!

HAzzMatt's/Lennon's quote hit it right on the nail!! Way to go HazzMatt!!

edit to add: I've seen many replies where someone says that it's hard to judge what someone means when they say something...it's impossible to read sarcasm, we are unable to catch the facial expressions! If everyone posting STOPPED and read what they were about to send, and try to imagine how the other cachers might perceive it, maybe that'd be helpful!! Stop the angst before it begins!! After all, if you, the writer thinks your post is a bit sarcastic, the next viewer might read it as heavily sarcastic!!

I can't stand some of those answers where the poster says something smart and glib just to show off his/her mentality...which sometimes really isn't worth displaying in public!!

also edit to add: spelling is probably a bit off this time of day!!

  11. I just bought the Explorist 500 LE...it came with an offer to get the Mapsend Topo 3D USA for a discounted price (yeah....$140 off!!!). The offer was for those with a DVD reader on the computer (mine isn't) so it took a bit of work to get the deal for my cd drive (I told them I'd just return it for the Garmin w/Mapsend already bundled).

Won't get it until the 16th or so as they aren't shipping for another week!

  12. I know not who HazzMatt is, I have seen his name and such, but I couldn't say as to his intent...nor do I really care! I think the main reason this thread is here is to inform all of what the consequences of being rude and obnoxious in the forums are! In this case, we all lost!

I agree, when you loose your TB, you are at the mercy of the masses...most of the people are HAPPY to follow simple rules as Tommy had in place (and he isn't the only one with those rules), some ignored the rules PURPOSELY to cause problems, some just don't know any better or don't care.

To me, if a simple request is made NOT to place the TB in a certain place, I won't...it's common courtesy!! If I was to take your car out for a spin (with permission of course), I'd likely NOT beat on it, even though the owner has no real control once it has left the drive!!

  13. I have been DYING to trade for one of these!! ANY color, I just want a Jeep to add to the collection!! I have my Rockin Roddy's Cachestalkers coin for trade! It also has a Jeep on the front!

  14. Welcome aboard!!!!

Writing down info like the size, difficulty and terrain, the hint and any possible info that might be of help is crucial if you don't print the whole page!! Going after a cache with NO idea of the size or toughness is tricky at best!! My new Magellan Explorist 500 LE actually lets me add all that info right to the unit!

I usually don't use the hints, but I might scan the logs to see if there is anything listed there that might be of help...read between the lines!!

Trade swag...flashlights, BATTERIES, those all-in-one tools, lotto tickets, dollar coins (or paper money too) etc... are all very welcome and can be used by most cachers!! Toys for the youngsters help too...as do pet toys!! Just remember that size IS limited in most cases!!

Try meeting other cachers whenever possible!!!! Go to a local Meet & Greet or similar event...MOST cachers are OVERLY friendly and many can offer great insight!!

Above all HAVE FUN and relax!! YOU make this sport what it is, we all play differently!! Be friendly and courteous to others around you, and try to use stealth AT ALL TIMES!!! You never know who may be watching from just around the corner or something!!

  15. Everyone has their own opinion, I don't mind people disagreeing with me or anyone that agrees with this thread...that's what makes this all work...as long as it's in a friendly way and not slamming!

Sarcastic or not, I am just happy people are READING this thread and figuring out that NASTY, MALICIOUS and CRUEL comments DO have an impact on us all and have no place in these forums! If Tommy's quitting brings about a nicer forums for all to enjoy, then this isn't a TOTAL loss...just the loss of a truly great contributor!!

  16. Cabella's has them too, if there's one nearby to you. They do lst for only about 4-6 hours on bright screen, but more like 6-8 on the lowest setting!

I just bought the car plug for mine! It hooks into the usb cable (which means it would be best to have 2 of those) and powers the unit very nicely while driving. The cable also recharges the li Ion battery.

Right now on the Magellan website, they have the battery and AC plug for $19.99

  17. As I said...bookmarks that are useful to the maker such as "caches I want to do" or "Freeway hides" or those types are great...but reviewing someone's cache through negative or positive bookmarks can be manipulated anyway they are set up.

    Logs can't be.

edit to add: letting someone grade my work is not good when opinions vary from cacher to cacher. What I like may be someone else's pet peeve. A bad experience could brand the cache badly when it may have been a fluke accident or one of a kind experience. ALSO...having the good reviews listed first and hiding the negatives isn't much good...some might disagree with the positive review and find it utterly useless when they get to the cache (too late then though).

  18. Just my 2 cents but...what is the reason for the logs if not to praise or give constructive criticism??? There really isn't much need for a negative and positive feedback in the bookmark lists at all!! I like the bookmarks where you can plan your next series of caches you want to do etc...but why let someone place a feedback bookmark on the cache page at all??

If you really wondered what a cache was like, go into the logs and read through them! I'm guessing that most will tell you if there are problems with the cache or not, if the cache is a nice area or takes you into a city dump, whether or not the cache owners care for the cache or WHATEVER you need to know! Letting someone brand another person's cache as negative or positive may not be good in all apps especially if you have people around you that don't like you...then all that needs be done is for them to have their friends leave negative feedback!

Logs are more likely to be honest...if you leave a log noting the cache was worthless and it sux because I can't stand the owner...it most likely will get deleted, but then, it's not an honest opinion anyway! However, say you find the cache on private property or in the middle of railroad tracks or WHATEVER...then you could tell others of any potential problems and the owner isn't likely to delete.

I leave criticism in some of my logs and get some too!! It's the best way to get a feel of how the cache is!!

Those bookmarks that say "caches I hate" or "waste of time caches" are merely the opinion of ONE cacher...and if someone sees that on a cache, they may not take the time to find out if the bookmark was placed fairly or not and just skip the cache!!

LIKEWISE...a cache with "this cache is beautiful" might be the opinion of a cacher that likes city streets and pavement where the next cacher may not like urbans...it's all in the eye of the reviewer (bookmark publisher). We shouldn't be subject to being rated by someone who found the cache but had a bad experience somewhere along the way (not controlled by cache owner) or may be in a bad mood when making the bookmark!!

edit to add: ANYONE can leave a bookmark on a cache page...even the guy across the country that has never found the cache...if I were to get into an arguement with cacher X and he/she decides to ruin my caches, they need only make some bad reviews or bookmarks and I can't do much about it...but they SURELY couldn't do that through the logs!!

  19. New to the forums (or fairly new), I had no idea you could search out topics...probably 90% of the new users wouldn't know of it either!

Besides, I agree...I want to have answers to MY question which may be a repeat of someone else's, but might be a bit different too! AND if someone has posted answers to the old thread, they may not go back in to check if there is a new question being asked! The thread may go back to the top, that doesn't mean everyone re-visits it when it does!!
