  1. I'll put it out there simple for you lawyer minded folk...if you can't find a cache any other way than to alter, destroy or "tear up" an area, you probably shouldn't be caching. If you can't rehide a cache where you found it LIKE you found it, you probably shouldn' be caching.

Moving a cache has NO justification...sorry.

And yes...the evidence IS there...it's in plain writing. It starts where the log says "I really didn't think it should be there like that. I rehid it well".

  2. Ohhhh...so we shouldn't blame the last cacher because the cache was probably moved before him/her??? Their actions are OK because someone else did it too??

I would explain that by saying the cacher was "lazy" is meant to read...the cacher was too lazy to find the right way to get the cache out of it's hiding spot, so tore the area up and is making it "all better" by tearing the area up even more to rehide it. Yes, they made more work physically for themselves, but they spared themselves the mental work of doing it right in the first place. More than one way to be lazy!!

  3. I wonder...are the majority REALLY happy with what they found...or too embarrassed to admit it pissed them off???

BTW...what was obvious about that cache??? Maybe I'm a bit slow, but it sounds like there are many out there that are just as slow as I. And yes...I stink at puzzle caches...

I'm sorry if you feel I'm trying to "invalidate" your opinion...hey to each their own...but when a lie makes me spend my money in ways that I wouldn't have normally, get's my anticipation up to such a level as what many PROBABLY perceive a TRUE 5/5 would, get's me to wasting my good time to plan, pack travel and everything else involved JUST to find that I was suckered by a LIE (especially if I contact and try to verify the realness of the cache...and am LIED to again)...I'm not going to be happy...and I wouldn't waste my time on ANY other hides by this cacher...if you have to lie to someone to get them to come out for a cache, I'd probably rethink my actions.

I wouldn't mind a LIAR'S cache if you actually made the ratings true...have fun...but not at someone else's expense!! The problem is HOW DO YOU KNOW??? Point out the OBVIOUSNESS of the lie and I'll shut up.

I also like the "it's not a wasted trip, there's many more caches out there to do than just the liar's" attitude! You're right, but there are plenty around MY AREA that wouldn't COST me my time, money and eventual hard feelings to go after...I can do them anytime. If I'm planning for a 5/5, I'm OBVIOUSLY looking for a REAL experience...not a joke of one that leaves me wanting and wondering.

  4. No sbell111...the finder tore the area up and then left the remains in the open because they didn't care to take the time to go at it right in the first place!

You hid a cache in a nice spot, the next cacher had a hard time finding it so they think they'll be the "nice guy" and make it easier...not good practice. That's an excuse from the finder that they couldn't find the cache because it was well hidden and then TORE the area up to find it.

  5. I would think you missed the part where the finder TORE the area up to get the cache and then left the pile behind...if you CAN'T figure out how to remove a cache without altering the area, which, from the reading of the OP, was done, you probably shouldn't remove it at all.

The moss covered rock is obvious to me that it doesn't need to be moved to get the container.

I agreee...a lazy cacher that didn't want to take the time to PROPERLY remove the container!!

  6. I have this problem often too...and there is a cache out there that I couldn't find...yes my own hide!

I don't try to "interpret" what another did, I hide it back where it came from! I shouldn't have to write to the finder asking where my cache is...it should be where I left it, not where someone thought it should be!!

Not much can be done, it's common practice for many cachers. I try to replace as it was. If I find one that is OBVIOUSLY out of place, I will hide it in the same place as best I can and write the owner. I won't MOVE it to fit MY thought of where it should have been!!

It's not the finder's job to "figure out the cache owner's intent"...if you don't think the cache is in the right place, hide it as best as you can IN THE SAME PLACE and let the owner do the interpretting!!

  7. I can't speak for the PDAs, but my new Magellan Explorist 500 LE makes it mostly possible to paperless cache...and I get the maps and everything right there on my unit!!

The unit cost me $200 at Wally World, I paid an extra $10 (but that was a special offer...regularly $150) for the MAPSEND Topo 3D USA software, bought the exta battery/ac adapter for another $20 and then the car power supply for another $20...total for me=$250!

Everything comes up...you can insert the hints and difficulty (you may be able to enable that to be downloaded, I haven't figured that out yet) into the description page RIGHT ON THE UNIT!! It shows all the caches right on the map, the map gives VERY detailed info of the roads, nearby attractions, you can even get the phone number to a motel or Pizza Hut RIGHT ON THE UNIT!! TOPO info is shown, rivers, drain ditches, parks etc...

I didn't know this unit could do all that, was a nice surprise indeed!!

NOW, I'm sure that many other high end units do this same thing and maybe more yet...but for my unit, fully loaded and ready to go, $250 is almost a GIFT!!! I paid $130 for my Etrex and cord...it did NONE of this...for a bill more to get all this??? WOW!!

My point I guess...check out your options and see what works best for you.

BTW...my signal reception...HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! No more lost signal in thick tree coverage!!! You do get what you pay for!!

edit to add: WOW...sounds like a lot of extra work to get all that loaded onto a unit...glad I don't do all that, mine brings them up on screen right at street level...NOT turn by turn, but just about as good!!

  8. Sorry all, my "inexperienced" arse just came from a thread that was talking about a REAL cache with REAL difficulties and REAL adventure!! Something I would rather KNOW about as to being lied to!! Keep your LIAR'S caches...children tell tall tales...MOST grownups would rather stick to the truth!!

Yep....slept on it a few more nights...I try to teach my children NOT to lie, sorry, I still feel the same way!!

What should be changed so it's not misconstrued??? Do away with the lie part and make it the cache you describe (if you have the ability, the know how and the cajones). OTHERWISE, leave the "big kids" caches to those that can make them!! LIAR'S CACHES=total waste of time IMHO!!!!

  9. Nutlady...I hope you didn't get the feeling I was coming down on you or anything...I was simply making a point (and asking a serious question). I applaud your attempt to keep peace AND keep everyone from harm's way...NOT cache police, just good cache etiquette!!

I'd write to, call or visit the cache owner and explain the problem...if this person is TRULY someone who is worthy of your holding them in "high regard", they'll likely do the right thing...if they won't, then you must!! It's for the good of the community and something you should be proud to act upon!!

  10. Other than apologize, yes, a learning experience!! If the TB isn't logged into the cache you grab it from, you should wait to see if they drop it! Sometimes things prevent one from getting the drop taken care of!

If, after a few weeks or so, you still haven't seen the bug dropped, you could write the cacher who is holding it and ask if they can drop it so you could grab it...always be polite of course!!

I found one a few weeks back in a cache other than where I found it, so I waited until today to log it. No movement and no one to contact, so I logged it!

  11. Buy rechargeable AAAs and use those...I know, not a LOT better, but better than nothing!! ALSO...buy the car power supply, helps while traveling to the next cache and also charges the batteries a little.

I ordered my battery a week or so ago and I was told late February...

The battery itself ISN'T in backorder, it's the package deal (ac adapter and battery)...you can buy the battery alone but the cost is staggering!!

  12. I might add...Nutlady...why are you looking for a cache that you admittedly thought was on private property in the first place??? If you have concern that it's NOT supposed to be there, why are YOU??

Not trying to be mean or single you out NL...just a serious question about this.

As far as jumping to conclusions...how are we to KNOW unless we question??? Ignoring the listing DEFINITELY won't help the situation! It's not that it BOTHERS anyone, it should be more to the point of IS that a SAFE and REASONABLE location, are we WELCOME there and not trespassing??

To simply ignore this is inexcuseable as a responsible cacher! Letting someone else find out the "hard way" is probably the worst thing I've seen so far!!

Would it REALLY hurt either the cacher wondering about a cache OR the owner of said cache if the person ASKS??

  13. I actually LOVE to get those "found/DNF" emails...for either my caches or my coins moving about!! I respond to all and love it!! A great way to "get to know your fellow cacher"!! I would rather have the mail and know what is going on with my caches as to have to go in and check the logs...my opinion of course!

With 54 hidden caches, I usually only get about 20 or so emails a day, and some days there are as little as 1-2!! Of course, the weekends may bring in more as there are often multiple finders for our newer hides!!

  14. I agree with the majority here...I'd definitely talk with the cache owner and ask that this problem be resolved QUICKLY so as not to put anyone in danger of injury or arrest!

Leaving this alone to let some other cacher walk into danger is irresponsible as a cacher, I can't imagine ANYONE saying to mind your own business here!! I'd also leave a remark in my find log stating the concerns just in case the cache owner isn't able to address the problem right away!

  15. BLAST AWAY LIAR'S...have fun with it...but I'm sure many of you realize this one was taken too far...and Vinney and Sue...I won't bother wth your caches, I can't tell if you're lying or not, but after this, I wouldn't waste my time! Not a slam on you at all...just not worth my time or money to find out!!

  16. Yep...and after taking my "nap", I still have the same feeling!!

No Rambler I didn't read your cache description (didn't see one at the time)...I was taking you at what you said. Sorry if I was out of line on yours, at least you TELL them the truth in the lies!!

YES, these ARE new to me, and being that...SORRY if I believe people who tell me things like this. MOST cachers I run into don't lie about something like this, so NO, I didn't realize they were even out there (sorry, I'm a trusting FOOL...I guess trust is something we shouldn't EVER have anymore??)

I liken this to the car salesman at the used car lot...the snake in the grass that would tell you anything to sell you a car. Unless you KNOW this punk is what he is, how are you going to know he's lying?? So...it's FUNNY when your 18 yr old goes car shopping and meets up with this punk?? It's funny when he sells the kid a lemon of a junker that has just been spit polished and a fresh pine tree has been added to the mirror??

You see, there ARE those kids that want to go out and do it for themselves...and there are those snakes WAITING for them to come along!! Those poor inexperienced youngsters who have yet to be shown that TRUSTING someone could be STUPID!!

Before seeing this post, I didn't realize we had "car salesmen" in the sport (and sorry to all you HONEST salepeople out there, not a slam on you or your profession...unless YOU are one of those snakes...then GIVE MY GOD-SON BACK HIS MONEY). :)

YES...programmed for angst...yes....spending a day plus to go after a cache, whatever costs it would be to get there in my Jeep (let's say...$100 round trip for that 500 mile jaunt PLUS any incidental mileage for having fun in the area, driving to other caches etc, paying to sleep on the ground in a tent when I COULD be home in my bed, having the COOL anticipation of going after a SERIOUSLY difficult and rewarding cache (which likely took me a bit of time to plan for, as I can't just take off on a whim...let's see, vacation time may be used, babysitters for the kids, house sitter, pet carer forer...WHATEVER little thing that wouldn't normally have done unless it was an COOL thing like finding a 5/5 ADVENTURE cache).

That probably DOES sound like it's just being blown out of proportion...unless YOU'RE the one that goes through all this only to find a joke of a cache waiting for you when you get there.

Read a map...great advice...mine doesn't show up on the cache page...does EVERYBODY else's?? Maybe I should buy up maps and keep them handy just to debunk any cache that sounds too good to be true!! Oh...but how would you know they're too good to be true?? I've been out to find "Holey Wall" in Vegas...didn't make it as I wasn't in good enough shape (personal health problems), but my friends did. I trusted that that one was real...it was! Sounded too good to be true, but there it was REAL and waiting for another attempt (I WILL be back...I also hope to get back to the top of Bridge MT. to sign that log...didn't have a cache there when I first climbed it...nope not going after MT Wilson, almost dying twice is enough for me).

So...sorry if I took all this at face value...what a fool I am to trust anyone these days...silly, silly trusting fool. SORRY if I'm that "18 year old" who trusts the snake because I just didn't know not to...sorry I thought all cachers were trustworthy and at least a BIT ethical about telling the truth IF asked!! I guess there's "snakes" in everything we do these days...that's sad!!

And NO...this isn't meant for those harmless and laughable liar's caches that don't take it to the extreme that this was taken to...those WOULD likely be fun...as long as they are listed as such and not built up as the cache to end all caches with no clue as to the truth.

btw...no, I wouldn't have thought to buy a topo map of the area...I wonder how many others would have???? Easy to say that you would to make yourself look smart, so I'll bet most would say they would...but are YOU a liar too??

  17. I'm not sure how some of you can actually stand behind a deceptive and all out BS cache as this! I have never heard of such a cache (granted, I've only been caching almost a year) and would likely have been one of the mad cachers who outed the cache for what it was. ESPECIALLY if I had taken special time to prepare and paid big bucks to get there! AND...don't tell me to check the logs for DNF's...we all know that many who don't find a cache never log their failing to find!!!

So now I have to worry about a cache where the owner has the stupid thing on his porch and the coords are LYING??? It's bad enough that coords can be bad accidentally...but to purposely LIE to someone about the coords would really put a bad taste in my mouth! Just because there are 24 people that found it, do you think they were all happy to be lied to?? If I spent an hour or so searching for a cache that isn't even there (and wasn't EVER there) I'd be wanting to out that LIE myself!!

And now I don't know what to believe about those PUC caches either?? I had been thinking about an attempt on a few of those...are they real or not??

I guess the worst thing would have to be the fact that the group even contacted the cache owner to inquire about it...such a smug and selfish act to NOT tell the truth before letting them make the trip and waste the money and time!! And to say you didn't realize they were making the trip ESPECIALLY for that cache...what a slap in the face!! I think the clue would have been when they wrote ASKING about it!!

CACHE OF THE YEAR...are we supposed to believe THAT part???

I agree...almost as funny as tripping a senior with a cane!!

  18. Well....you DID ask!! I doubt that anyone here is getting ready to "round up the posse", but I would think you got pretty much an answer to your question!!

I wouldn't bend or manipulate a TB tag in any way...it's not mine. I don't add any tags to a TB, I don't put any travel papers in (no printer at this time) but I think they are a good idea and surely a baggy would be best all around!!

Don't take what most say personally, they are mainly trying to make a point (I think...can't speak for them though).

  19. OK...sorry...I have been guilty of reading posts differently than they are intended before!! Yesterday was a bad day for me too, so I was a bit edgy...not an excuse for acting rudely...sorry!!

I too have been out and about...I didn't start the trading in masses with Geopigs until I was well on my way, (she wanted me to prove that I was a TB hunter worthy of joining the group...so to speak) but yes, we do swap a lot of TBs. MOSTLY though, Geopigs and I go out and collect them ourselves and then we share them between us (she'll give me half, we'll log them and then swap them to each other). I too have put ungodly mileage on my new Jeep (35,500 since buying it last January) MOST of those miles are caching/TB miles (except the trip to Vegas...but then I cached and hunted TBs then too), as I ride my motorcycle to work and just about ANY time I get the chance...even up until a few weeks ago when it just got a bit too cold for me!!

I rarely get any TBs from anyone other than Geopigs, but she does get them from others like mentioned...I am not privvy to a good share of those, it causes problems between some mutual friends...so I sometimes watch when Geopigs makes a drop, then I'll go grab those up and keep the cycle going!!

Geopigs and I are going out this morning for a small run, but I don't see me doing this too much any more...it REALLY takes up my time when I'd rather find caches (when we go out, Geopigs will plan only for caches with TBs...we have made full day trips that only included finding 4 caches...most are very long trips to the deep Ohio area or around Grand Rapids). I've been sitting on the same TBs for over two weeks now and really have to get them moving again, but I'm not out for the TBs any more...the logging process, the long driving hours etc...I can't do it like they do...I'm just not as dedicated! It would mean either doing ONLY TBs or ONLY caches...I want to do it all!

It IS easier though when there are so many well used TB hotels nearby...Jackson (about a 20 min drive) has a good hotel, Coldwater (Wolverine Warriors country)...about an hour away, Kalamazoo (where I go often during the summer on my motorcycle)...about an hour and a half out, Lost Scouts are about 2 1/2 hours away another friend is 3 hours, Great Lakes Lighthouse and MaxB's Big Orange are both about 4-4 1/2 hours away. During the summer, I might plan a day trip to ALL of those maybe every month or so.

  20. After reading this I am left trying to figure out where you're coming from in all this. At first I thought it was going to be a slam because I go after masses of TBs to up my numbers...hey, that's no secret, I've said that often!

Then I thought it was going to be a slam because I discover coins, but I see that my count is less on the coin side than yours (but that doesn't REALLY mean much, I've found a lot of coins in the wild, so some coins are finds on both counts I'd assume).

I think what it really boils down to is you didn't like that I said there are "proper" ways to get your numbers up?? Why, did I hit a nerve or something?? I wasn't trying to be mean or anything, play the game any way you want...I sure do! My way makes ME happy...if it doesn't make YOU happy, to bad! I'm not out to please you or anyone else!

I would have to say that the answer to your question about "cheapening the accomplishment" would have to be answered by YOU!! If you don't mind getting the numbers by discovering a dozen TBs from a TB hotel, have at it! I won't as that "cheapens" MY accomplishment! If you don't mind going to an event and grabbing every coin sheet laying on the tables so you can log them, by all means, please do! I won't because I mainly only discover friends' coins (and my friends DO have a lot), but again, that's ME!!

And you are right, there is no DEFINED "proper" way....whatever YOU feel to be proper works fine...for you!

And lastly....you'll likely notice that I am not working on the TB thing much anymore...I found it took away from other aspects of the game that I like equally (if not more)...hiding caches and finding caches!! I really only tried to climb the ladder because my friends Geopigs, Lost Scouts, Wolverine Warriors and MaxB on the River were up there!! After seeing how fast one can climb if they try, I have lost interest! BTW...what has taken you so long...you've had a bit longer than I to get there...it is I that should be chasing YOU!!

  21. I understand what you are saying Thot...and I can say for myself (and HOPEFULLY most other cachers who move volumes of TBs about) that I do not go out to just discover TBs EVER!! I'm of the same thought as you actually...but there are times when discovering is the most logical (TB not going my way and I can't help it along. I did pick it up, I will still write you a nice note about the TB and whatever, but since I can't help it on it's mission, I'll leave that to someone who can). My discovering your TB may not help you much (more than to let you know it is still safe), but I shouldn't be "punished" so to speak, for not being able to move the TB in the way it wants to go.

If I were MADE to only grab a TB, then I suppose ANY TB that I see will get grabbed regardless of mission and then will be sidetracked! THAT is probably the best reason for discovering. A TB hunter who is less than ethical may do this, but I'd rather TRY to keep a bug on mission as much as possible (that doesn't mean that those TBs should be off limits to me). I have made mistakes and I have learned some ins and outs.

Someone who is out discovering masses of TBs purely to boost numbers isn't really doing themselves much good as the cache community would see them for what they are doing, so their "accomplishment" will be meaningless to most others (and the only real reason that I can see to hunt TBs is to get on the LaRobley Top 50 Mover's list). My name on that list would mean less to me if I made it in this way...it "cheapens" the accomplishment.

My discoveries on my acct are mostly coins from friends' collections! I can't MAKE them give me the coins to move, so I can only do as I do with them...discover! I haven't been discovering near as much these days though, as I now see that this isn't really doing it the "proper" way (I was shown to do this by another friend when I first started out). In reality, I more like the icons on my page than being on the top 50, so I do discover coins that I haven't got the icon for....but I like to at least see that coin first!!

We all play the game our way, hopefully SOMEWHAT respecting others as well. We make the game what it is for us and we play accordingly!!

I would add that I can't remember any times I discovered TBs other than a VERY FEW instances similar to the example given.
