  1. For some reason I just saw this thread. When I released the geocoin into the wild, it did not have an accompanying tag. It sounds like something another finder added at a later date. Unfortunately this geocoin is still amongst the missing
  2. Hi I'm looking for Erica, who used to live in Hawaii. Last I heard, she had moved to Oregon, is a pilot for Horizon Air, and is now into geocaching. We have mutual friends and colleagues in HI, and I'm just trying to track her down to say hi. Erica, if you read the forums, contact me via PM. Are you going to GW6 by any chance?
  3. I searched these topics in the forums and couldn't find any thread, so I apologize if this has been mentioned before. My paternal grandmother's maiden name is Hughes and she grew up in Irondale, MO. I want to send a travel bug from Santa Cruz, CA to Hughes Mountain Natural Area (GCA67) as the main goal. Also I thought I could have it visit some of the places I used to go to when visiting her on summer vacations. I found a cache listed at Elephant Rock SP (GCGH6H), and was wanting to know if there was anything hidden around Johnson's Shut-ins, Meramec Iron Works, and/or Bonne Terre Mine. I tried to do some searches on geocaching.com, but since I'm not too familiar with the local geography I didn't have much luck finding any leads. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!
  4. quote:Does anyone have any experience using the USB/serial connector from a Palm Pilot cradle with their Garmin? Since I already have one of those, I'd hate to purchase yet another adapter. Yup, I'm cheap -- look how long I hung on to my Win95 machine! Yipee! It works and I didn't have to purchase any new hardware or software! I've solved my connectivity issues, so I thought I'd post the info here in case it helps others. Please refer to my previous question for the particulars regarding my system setup. Here's what I had to do to get everything to work: 1) On both the iMac and the Virtual PC (VPC), make sure that the HotSync portion of the Palm Desktop software is disabled (HotSync pull-down menu/settings) 2) Using the Palm USB adaptor and Garmin serial cable, plug the GPS into a main USB port on the back of the iMac (not into one of the keyboard ports) 3) In VPC, make sure your USB setting is set to Enabled (Virtual PC List/settings) 4) Again, in VPC settings for USB, make sure the Palm Pilot Cradle is Enabled. 5) In EasyGPS preferences, make sure you have selected the correct COM port that your GPS is plugged into. (in my case, this is COM3) I hope this helps others. -Susie (coralgeo) ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  5. Aha! Yet another Mac user! Forgive the long introduction here, but a little background might be handy. I'm currently running a 17-inch flat screen iMac with OSX, and VPC 5 with Win2000. I have the little yellow Garmin eTrex with its PC cable which works fine to up/download waypoints via EasyGPS on my old Win95 PC clunker (don't laugh, it's paid for ). I've loaded EasyGPS and ArcView on VPC and use a floppy to transfer waypoint data back and forth from Mac to PC. Ideally this is an intermediate step I'd like to avoid (in addition to letting me get rid of my old PC), so I need to get a USB/serial adapter to allow me to connect my GPS directly to my iMac. Now for the question: Does anyone have any experience using the USB/serial connector from a Palm Pilot cradle with their Garmin? Since I already have one of those, I'd hate to purchase yet another adapter. Yup, I'm cheap -- look how long I hung on to my Win95 machine! 6. A few years ago my father subscribed me to A Word A Day <http://wordsmith.org/awad/index.html> -- an email service that sends out a word each day, complete with definition, example of usage, and pronunciation. Usually I just quickly glance at the email and hit the delete button. Today's word (06-23-03) was MUGGLE. Not too surprising due to the fact that the latest Harry Potter book came out this weekend. Much to my delight however, was the second example they used -- "If a muggle stumbles on a cache, they sometimes take all the contents of the cache since they are uninformed on geocacher etiquette." (taken from an article in the Baltimore Sun (MD) 04-17-1-03). I've been using the word geo-muggle for some time in both my cache descriptions and logs. Now I feel fully justified! :-) ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  7. Would help if I gave the link, huh? http://www.scubasue.com/geocaching/USAfield.jpg ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  8. I rec'd this in an email today. It definitely counts as a GPS drawing. COURTESY OF "WORKS BY WALLY", the picture shows a farmer with time on his hands. Its's a picture of a corn field in Lawrenceburg, TN. The owner allegedly drew the picture out on his computer, downloaded it to his GPS system, and then followed the GPS on his bushhog. Interesting and patriotic too! ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  9. quote:Originally posted by Just a Short Walk: Look for a article in the "Californian" this thursday in the pull out section.. Darn it Don, I missed it too. I couldn't find it in the Californian's online archives. Any way you can post a copy? -Susie ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  10. Rec'd word today that the price of a USGS topo quad will be increasing from $4 to $6 on September first. The price is being adjusted to reflect recovery of the costs associated with their reproduction and distribution. The last price increase was 7 years ago. Even at $6 they're still a bargain and a great tool for us geocachers. ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  11. Please see Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Garmin. Log the event as 'other' for now so we'll know to have enough chairs. Hope you can make it! ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  12. Everything You've Always Wanted To Know About Garmin Now's your chance to ask! On Wednesday, May 29th at 7pm, a representative from Garmin will be at the West Marine store in Santa Cruz. Whether you're a Garmin, Magellan (or Trimble, or whatever) user, come meet up with fellow geocachers beforehand for dinner around 5:30 or 5:45 at Erik's Deli Cafe (1664 Soquel, across from Dominican Hospital, near ToysRUs, opposite side of Hwy 1 from West Marine). We'll eat and chat, and then head across the highway to West Marine (17th and Soquel Ave extension, next to Staples). Please log the cache as "other" for now, and let us know to expect you (I told WM I'd call them with an approximate head count so they'll have enough chairs). If you can't make it in time to eat with everyone at Erik's, you can probably talk one or two folks into hanging out afterwards ;-) Coords for Erik's Deli are: N36 59.337 W121 58.895 print out the above coupon and bring it with you! Now you have the info in case it never gets approved. Do you really think it sounds too commercial?
  13. TPTB haven't approved the cache yet, but here's the URL http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=22068 At this point in time, you've got to be logged in to view it. It's being held up for approval due to the commercial sounding nature (does it sound too commercial to you?) ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  14. The Garmin rep won't be at West Marin until 7pm, so it may last until 8:30 or later. I don't know about you, but I can't wait that long for dinner. I'm going to set up the "event" so that we meet up beforehand for dinner. If people can't make it that soon after work, and maybe want a second chance to get together afterwards, that's great. Now, if I can just find the lat/long for West Marine... ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson
  15. With the help of my geo-buddy, Iron Chef, a little advanced planning, and a major weekend geo-marathon, I was able to snag my 100th cache on the same day as my one-year geo-anniversary. Whoopee! ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson

  17. ATTN all Central Coast California Geocachers. I was at West Marine earlier today and they had the following notice posted:"Here's your chance to meet the Garmin representative! Get your questions answered and find out what's new and exciting from Garmin. The rep will be at West Marine (17th and Soquel Extension behind Staples) on Wednesday, May 29th at 7pm." If you're interested, maybe we can get a group of geocachers together and meet there. Anyone interested? Post a reply here. [This message was edited by coralgeo on May 09, 2002 at 01:13 PM.]
  18. If you're going to be on Maui, a short (but pleasurable) ride on the ferry to Molokai for the day would be a nice diversion. As of today, there are three caches on the island. All are located at great points of interest and can be included in a nice day's trip. And I guarantee you won't have any traffic problems! Have a wonderful time! (how could you not?) ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson

  20. This is an A-1 effort on your part. From the thought put behind the "hide", to the graphics on the cache detail page, a very impressive piece of work indeed. My hat goes off to you! I only wish I could be in Bimini soon, but all of my diving recently is in Hawaii. I need to be in St. Petersburg FL in June for work...maybe I need to work in a trip to Bimini then ---------------------- The shore is an ancient world, for as long as there has been an earth and sea, there has been this place of the meeting of land and water. -Rachel Carson

  22. I found a gold man's wedding band in a micro-cache I visited yesterday! None of the written or online loggers claimed to have left it.
