  1. @Frau Potter and one more just minutes ago. porniferre1997
  2. Just tried to update on my phone and got the above message. Current versions: Geocaching 6.0.1 Android 8.1.0 Google Pixel XL
  3. Good morning. I love the new Nearby Events section on the users home page, but I noticed that an archived future event appears on mine. In particular, this one is a CITO. I suspect that this was because you wish to show prior events that may be archived, but I suspect you can modify the query to handle this. Thanks!
  4. I'm switching to Verizon in the near future (when my Google Pixel comes in :-) ) and will let you know if that fixes my problem. I haven't seen the numbers that Marle94 (a friend) has seen, but I consistently see between 2 and 4 notifications for every new cache. I do have some overlap between some notifications, but I've confirmed that this isn't the problem. (I do see multiple notifications in that instance, but that's expected on my part.) Best, Tom TFulton42
  5. Interestingly enough, my experience is slightly different. I download 8 pocket queries each Tuesday (to update the statistics for Georgia). 5 were "unavailable" and the other 3 had no new data.
  6. I suspect that I can help you out around Atlanta. When will you be here? How long will you be here? What will your availability be? (In other words, will you have a full day to cache? Or just something to catch on the way by?) What types of caches do you really like? Tom
  7. Ok, so if the second method works, why not just edit the log? I did edit the log that I needed to edit, but the link doesn't on the cache page and I suspect that Groundspeak would like to know this. (If they don't already!)
  8. When I click on Google Maps from the "For Online Maps ..." menu on the cache page, it goes to Google Maps just fine, but the location is the nearest postal address and doesn't show the actual location. I'm using the new beta Google Maps. It works just fine with the old Google Maps. I know that this is probably a change in behavior of Google Maps, but can be fixed (and then ignored if Google changes behavior again) by including the "loc:" in front of the coordinates in the URL to Google Maps. This is with the latest version of FireFox.
  9. When I try to edit one of my existing logs from the cache page by clicking on the "View / Edit Log / Images" link, I get a "404 - File not found" error. However, if I view the logbook, I can edit from that instance of the log. I've listed the 2 specific links below. The top one is from the cache page and the 2nd one is from the Logs page. This is with the most recent version of Firefox. Didn't work: http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/log.aspx?LUID=6e8ec5a8-14b4-4abf-b100-2b72d9556e7e Did work: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=6e8ec5a8-14b4-4abf-b100-2b72d9556e7e
  10. Yes, the line is blurred, and sometimes a cache's type is just plain wrong. In this case, however, I'd say these two caches are typed correctly. The difference is that for The Place to Be, you have to go to the specified location to get the information that leads you to the next stage, making it a classic multi, while for Atlanta History Cache, you don't go to the posted coordinates; instead, you have to research the questions on-line to get the answer, making that a classic unknown. Notice also that Atlanta History Cache is quite old. Sometimes in the early days, the difference was even more blurred, so very odd things happened. In this case, for example, Atlanta History Cache appears to be a virtual cache labeled as an unknown, so (if I'm reading this correctly) there's no physical cache, just questions to answer. There actually is a cache for Atlanta History, but I see your point about it being nearly a virtual. It's almost like the CO intended for it to be a virtual and then couldn't do that. Thanks to all for the opinions. I think that I've got a better idea of how I'd label different caches. Thanks!
  11. I understand what you are saying and the clue of what is at the posted coordinates is a good one I think. But I know of another puzzle cache with an http address at the posted coordinates. You then look up the address and it gives you the final coordinates. Based on your definition, I would call this a multi. Understand, I'm not complaining about any of these caches, I'm just picking at the definition to make sure I understand the difference. (And it may just depend on the owner/reviewer combination.) Thanks!
  12. Hi folks, I have a quick question about multi-stage vs. unknown (puzzle) caches. It seems that sometimes the type of cache is chosen randomly. For instance: The Place to Be - This is a multi-stage cache. You have to compute the coordinates from information that you have to find. Then you have the coordinates to the cache location. Atlanta History Cache - This is a puzzle cache. Again you have to find some information and use that to computer the location of the cache. So what's the difference? Thanks! Tom
  13. Hi folks, I apologize if this is already in a thread. Just point me to it if there is one. I'm considering buying my 1st GPS for Geocaching. I'm currently using my iPhone, but want to upgrade. I'm looking at the Garmin Etrex 30 and the GPSMap 62s. The GPSMap is about $100 more and I'm wondering if the money is worth it. It seems like the big difference is the Quad helix antenna. How big a difference does that make? Thanks for all of the help. Tom
  14. Thanks. My main confusion was the description in the FAQ. It seemed to be double counting them.
  15. The way I read it was to count each log and there are two logs for each trackable. It's quite possible that I misread it. 3 and 1 is what I have put in. Thanks, I should have thought of this.
  16. Hey folks, First, I want to thank all of the kind folks on this forum. My wife and I have been doing this for just over 2 weeks and a really enjoying ourselves! We logged the 8th oldest cache in the world and oldest in Georgia today! I'm curious how you count trackables for BadgeGen stats. When I read the webpage, it seems that you count it once when you retrieve it and once when you drop it off. But that doesn't make sense to me. I would think that you only log each item once unless you happen to come across it again. Opinions? Thanks, Tom
  17. Just a follow up. My wife and I were out this afternoon and were 3rd to find a new cache. It turned out to be just a few miles from us. We would have had a chance for first to find, but were going to church first. Still, very satisfying to be early on the list! Thanks to both of you for the help! Tom
  18. This was a perfect answer. I'm now set up for the instant notifications and I found this post by niraD that has great information. Thanks to you for posting and niraD for creating this post!
  19. Hi folks, We've just finished our 2nd week of caching and are loving it. As a native Atlantan, I've now been places I never knew existed! I have two basic questions that don't seem to be covered by a FAQ. 1. Is there a primer on puzzle caches? I consider myself a pretty good puzzler, but haven't figured out how to start on a couple of them. (I have a computer background and recognize ASCII when I see it.) I'm not trying to get hints that would solve any puzzles, but would just like to understand the types of puzzles a bit better. 2. Just HOW do folks find out about new caches so fast?! It seems that there are folks hunting for new caches within minutes of there being published! I'm not trying to become a FTF hound, but I am curious about how to find out about new caches. Thanks, Tom
  20. We're in the same boat as you, but not quite ready to purchase. If there's an REI near you, try that. First, you should join. It's a lifetime membership and you will probably get a 20% off coupon to use on any one item. This lasts until April 15th. I know that the one's in Atlanta have the GPS you are looking for since we were just looking at them. Best of luck! Tom
  21. Specifically, the puzzle gives a starting point and bearing, and then a second point from which you can compute the latitude point and longitude point based on intersections to the original line. The second point is exactly 2 miles from the original line at 2 places. Those intersections give the cache coordinates. Since the distances are short, great circle isn't a necessity. I can do it by hand if I have too. (The last part should be said in a whinny teenagers voice. :-> Thanks!
  22. Hi folks, We just entered our 2nd week caching and are up to 19 finds! :-) I'm working on a puzzle cache and was curious if there are any good software for mapping. Specifically, I wish to mark a point with longitude and latitude, draw a line from a point in a specific direction and with a specific distance, and measure the distance between two points. Thanks! Tom
  23. Thanks for all of the answers folks. I've gone out several times with my 3GS since my original post and I think "Not Roy" has it exactly right. Sometimes it works great... and sometimes it's not so great. I feel like I understand the limitations better now and will search accordingly! This is FUN! :-) Tom
