  1. That is the beauty of it. You can see your custom maps along with the garmin maps. That is why you make them transparent. Lets say you make a map of your own tracks, trails or waypoints you then can see this on Garmin City Navigator or Garmin Topos. What I do is make my own topos then I have the ability of auto route with navigator but can see topos when I want without switching maps.
  2. You got it right. If you buy all 4 things you will have a complete unit.
  3. The new cx models come with a micro sd card. The 60cx models have a 64mb card. This card is mostly used to store your maps on. So if your father in law decides to buy a bigger micro sd card he can fit more maps on the unit. The 64mb card though should be big enough to get him started.
  4. I am another for the 60csx or 60cx. I got a 60cx last January and got to use it this year for archery hunting and loved it. I would mark trails and my treestand and then had no problems at all finding them in the dark. I also use it for driving and find it very easy to use. Just mount it were you can glance at it and you are good to go. Don't forget to get navigator and topo software for the unit to make it complete.
  5. I have to say the only time I have it hooked up to the computer is in the house so it isn't the same but anyways when I have it near the monitor I get poor reception. If I let it plugged into the computer but get it as far away as possible I get better reception. No idea why. Was your unit close to the computer?
  6. Have to say that I use one for my 60cx and my camera. Also I talked my brother in law in getting one for his 60csx and he is glad he did. He ran something shard across the screen and the shield protected it big time. The edge of the shield took the force and the screen is fine. I would say worth the investment for sure.
  7. I would have to say I think it is against copyrights to edit Topo Canada from Garmin. Look on the site and learn how to make your own. They are much better anyways and free of charge.
  8. I have a 60cx and have to say it works great for hunting. I mark my tree stands before hand then head into the woods at dark for archery and have no problem at all finding the tree I want to climb. It is better than wandering around in the woods or trying to put up markers. I have never lost signal in the woods yet here in Western Pa. As for the lowrance no experience with it but wanted to share my experience with the garmin.
  9. One way to download the hint is to use the custom POI option. I add my geocaches via the waypoints and add type terrain level and a few other things to the comments. Then I also add the same geocaches via the custom POI option with the hints in the comment box. You still don't get the description but usually you can load all the hints which is helpful if needed. I use GSAK to do all this.
  10. - How do you load CN and Topo at the same time. You can only open one at a time in MapSource?? I want to learn how to do that, too. thanks. Simply open up mapsource then select the topo maps. Go through and select the areas you want to add. Next select city navigator or city select from the tab and then go through and select the areas you want to add. Then load all the maps to your gps
  11. Any chance you could place this edit into the instructions that started this thread? This has certainly become my go to location for attempting this stuff and it would be nice for the instructions to evolve over time.... I am not sure how to go back and edit it now. If someone knows how let me know. I plan on letting this thread go for a little longer then get suggestions from those who have used my process then edit the instructions to make them better based on those recomindations.
  12. I get this error (in DOS): I checked the .img file in mapedit and layer 0 isn't empy, so is it my text file? Check your test_pv.txt. Are the levels set like this or did they get changed? Levels=2 Level0=20 Level1=17 If it looks like this then maybe send me the pv test_pv.txt and I will take a look at it. Let me know. You are almost there.
  13. I am not sure but probably a way. I know if you change the detail setting on your gps that will change at what distance things are displayed. You could also try to change mapsource zoom on the levels tab and see if that helps. Not sure if it is possible but maybe.
  14. I think it should work. I never tried it but in theory it should work fine just like trails and such.
  15. Here is an edit of a step. This is to make it more clear and to avoid level0 and level1 from being blank which is bad. Anyways 5B4 should look like this. 4. click on the levels tab, hightlight the last level in the series and then hit the insert before tab do this until you have level0= through level5= Hopefully this helps out.
  16. BIG, When you select the point, move the cursor just a tiny bit and click again. Then right-click and select "End". You'll now have a tiny line. But be careful! Make sure you draw this tiny line in the area where your contours are going to be. If you draw it outside this area by mistake (like I did on a couple of maps) it'll be deleted when you get to the "Trim" part after you dump in your hydrography. You follow? I just noticed that you can select the down arrow by the "wand" and select "point" to create a point instead of a line. More better me thinks. That is what I do. Guess the directions need made more clear at that part.
  17. I don't get a white page, I still see contours. From there, I can't build my file in cGPSmapper. I get error #32 and this text: If you want send me your .mp file and I will take a look at it and see if I notice anything.
  18. Anyone? Sorry I didn't respond. It will work.
  19. As for your first question simply go to your map page, hit menu, setup map, go to map setup-information and it menu again. This will allow you to hide your garmin topos as a whole or to hide your custom topos as a whole. You don't have to select individual maps. As for question 2 I am looking into this kind of stuff myself so I am not sure right now. I simply just switch between my maps mostly just using navigator and my custom topos on the same screen
  20. I have never used the TYP file. How would you do this? A quick over view would be helpful. Thanks
  21. I will pm you my email address. Just send it to me and I will take a look.
  22. Klatch is right. Make it look like his link. If you still get get it send me your .mp file and I will take a look at it but this should do it.
  23. I think the problem was there due to my not having the level at the bottom of the list selected when I inserted more levels. It just that when I'm zoomed out looking at the map set in Mapsource, I see nothing but the rectangles representing the map panels. I'd like something to get an idea of what map panels represent what area. What do you think about this?: Maybe placing this other map info on a higher level that's set to something like 15mi, which level 4 at 18 bits is. No one views their GPSr at that level anyway so it wouldn't matter if it showed up there. Check this link out. It might help you out a little. I haven't tried any of this but you might. http://damel.blogspot.com/
