  1. I had to wait an entire 5 minutes this afternoon for a hide to publish. Part of the reason it took so long is the Reviewer had to Archive my older disabled place holder cache that was still listed there, before the new one could be published in its place. That is what I clearly indicated I wanted to happen. Thanks "O".

Funny I just found out about this cache here in the forums. Another cache where I didn't get a notification but I guess that is another topic for another day. Maybe a FTF run is in order.

  2. I agree. This does not affect anything. I signed up in 2012 but didn't make my first find until over a year later.

I'm curious to know though how a few users profiles says they joined in 2010 for example but their first find was in 2009? Is this a matter of they separated an account and then backed dated finds? I probably just answered my own question. But confirmation would be nice.

  3. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. I've been concerned about that on the new app as well. It seems way too easy to accidentally delete a bookmark list. I think there should be some mechanism on the site where you could lock the list so it cannot be deleted. And maybe pick which ones you want to be shown on the app. I like that my lists are available to me on my phone but I really don't like that I could possibly delete one of them. Especially when some of them take a lot of work and research to create. And some of them I would never use on the app anyway. Some are just for reference or a list of FTF's and such. Not something I would ever use in the field.

  4. Its funny you bring these up as I took off Tuesday and went and did the new set down there (Hanover 2016) and cleared up a couple of old SGT caches we'd previously DNFed/couldn't do.

I would agree that as I look at nearby caches, some of them have deteriorated enough that they are now disabled/archived. I also know that in Spring Grove, space was becoming an issue as you could see he had to archive some of the earlier ones to make room for the newer ones.

I hope that he fixes the old ones and creates a 2016 version of them. It is a fun outing and while it is a 3ish hour trip, it is worth it.

Yes, I hope they fix them also and realize not everyone has gotten what they need for the first 2 parts of a multi part prize. I have heard they are worth it so I'm going to try to get there soon.

  5. Maybe "they", possibly thinking this was gonna bring much-needed revenue to the area, decided that the return on the big geotour bucks wasn't that much, and simply lost interest.

Sounds like it was at one time a geotour, and now folks may have to go the normal route of NM and NA to get things cleaned up.

They have not lost interest. The plan is for more caches this year and more next year. If you are not going to maintain what you already have, why place more?

  6. I have been wanting to complete a local Geo-Tour for some time now and had started it months ago but I got very disappointed in the lack of maintenance on the caches. Most of them already had needs maintenance on them and quite a few have already been archived. I guess I'm wondering why this is allowed if it's a Geo-Tour? This group is planning on placing more geo-tours over the next 2 years. It seems if you don't go at the very beginning you are going to have to suffer through broken/wet/mushy & moldy logs that are really not that much fun to find and run the chance of there not being enough caches left in order to qualify for the 'prize'. I realize I could just skip the whole thing but I like the idea of getting a coin. Has anyone else noticed this with Geo-tours?

  7. I just downloaded this app 2 days ago and so far love it! I have finally found the replacement for Geocaching Classic. I love that mysteries with corrected coords have their own special icon and are placed on the map at the corrected coordinates. Wonderful! The field notes also works great as I like to make my entries from the comfort of my home, not out in the field. I love that I can see my DNF's too.

The 1 thing I've seen so far I think could use improving (or maybe I just don't know how to do it) is the offline caching. I put a cache on an offline list and put my phone in airplane mode to test how this would work if I was somewhere with no phone signal or in a another country. I seem to have difficulty with the maps populating and when they do, the zoom level isn't that great (especially for satellite). I'm also confused if I should be using the Offline maps when in this mode or Apple/Google maps. The offline ones seem to just give me a grid of squares. Actually, I wish the Offline map choices were a little further down the list as I tend to switch to street and satellite a lot and when not in airplane mode, and I keep picking the offline map choices because they are at the top of the list.

My only other complaint is the Compass Calibration screen keeps coming up at the most inopportune times. It has already locked up my screen and also doesn't let me finish calibrating it. It freezes up. Most times, I just quickly hit cancel hoping to keep it from freezing up the screen.

But, overall, great job on this app. It is definitely worth the $5.00 and is very easy to use.

  8. This is why I like the easy-to-read Help Center... :)

On the duck race FAQ, it does say:

Sometimes geocachers find trackables and forget to log them. However, if time passes and your trackables is still missing, you have several options:

•Send out a replacement trackables: All trackables come with a copy tag in case the original is lost—attach the copy tag to another item and place it in a new cache

•Or, you can write/etch the TB Code onto another item and place it in a new cache

•The tracking number will still work even if it's on another item

So, yep, you're good-to-go, as long as i it is/was a trackable with no prior mileage (that's also in the FAQ).

Umm, yeah. I thought I read all the info on the page. I did not however, read the Trackable Race FAQ. Thanks for pointing that out to me. This will be my first trackable number out in the wild so we'll see how it goes.

  9. I was thinking about entering the Duck Dash but I really don't want to send out one of my trackables because I'm sure it would most likely go missing. My collection is mostly all coins and I don't own any plain ol' tags. Would it be OK to activate one of these and then just put the number on a laminated tag and set it in a cache? Anyone have any opinions?

  10. [...] It just takes me to that message thread. There is not way to get to their profile from the message center.

You're clicking the wrong icon. Click the icon within the message.

    Hans

Well, duh! OK that does work. Thank you for clearing that up.

But not very intuitive. I think a user would be more inclined to click the icon on the left side (IMO), not within the message.

  11. Is it possible to update the message system? It would be helpful if there were a link to the cachers on that page. If someone messages me and wants a hint on one of my caches, the first thing I do is visit their profile page. You can't even copy and paste their name right now, so it is rather tedious, in my opinion.

Just click on the cacher's icon: it's a direct link to their profiles.

    Hans

I was wondering about that as well. I agree with the OP. This is tedious and there are times I would like to see their profile before responding. I usually open another window and look it up but it would be nice to just click their icon and go to their profile. I use Chrome and clicking their icon does not take me to their profile page. It just takes me to that message thread. There is not way to get to their profile from the message center.

  12. I still don't use this app as I prefer the classic one and initially I thought this clustering thing was a good idea but I liked it better when I could see all the dots in a wide area. Can't this feature be changed to a toggle on/off? If you want clustering, great. If not, let the user turn it off. Do you guys actually use these apps? It seems like those creating the features have never cached with an app and don't really understand how they are used in the field. It's doubtful that I'll ever use this app. When the classic one quits working I will spend money on a better, 3rd party app that already has the features I'm looking for.

  13. Thanks for this post!

I'm still using the Classic app because this one still doesn't do field notes but I'm glad to see it improving. I had just logged on to the new one because I do like that I can see a much larger area of caches on the map view. Then I was wondering what the heck all the numbers in the blue circles were all about. Thanks for explaining. Love that we can finally view a list on map view too! Keep up the good work.

  14. I permanently encrypted a users log on one of my hides (by no means a spectacular hide or anything). It was a 2 word log explicitly stating where the hide was located. I wrote a note to the user via the message center since they are a "Not Validated Premium Member" and do not have an e-mail, to please not do that as it "spoils" the fun for future seekers if you blatantly post the hide location in your log. Anyway, it does not show as encrypted on the app which is where I would most like it to be encrypted as almost all new players are using a phone app. Am I missing something? Why has this info not transferred to the app? Also, can you just buy a premium membership via the app store for $30.00 and never have to log in to the website? Never read the guidelines? etc, etc.

On another note: Is there a way to set your time zone on the app? I post things on line but they do not show in the same order on the app. I would imagine this is due to some sort of time zone issue? I had this same issue with the classic app as well but was wondering if it was available in the new one.

  15. I think the message center has greatly improved since it first went live which gives me hope for the currently sad state of the Geocaching® app. However, if there is one thing I would love to see changed it would be the size of the window where I am typing my message to another user. It is annoying it is only 2 lines wide. I sometimes write very complex messages to other's about caches and it would be so much nicer if I could actually see what I was writing without having to scroll through the whole thing one line at a time.

Can we get an improvement on this? Does anyone else feel the same? Maybe it's just me.
