It would be nice to have forum pages for each province or region so others do not need to hear the cachers on vancouver island complain all the time.

God forbid anyone else should know that we have.........opinions! Shhhhhhhhhhh.....maybe Alberta will hear.

    I have no opinion.

  2. Although I was not named in FLeghorn's diatribe, I apparently, am one of the dissenters, and 'sour grapes', as well. I, too, held a different opinion, and I, too, was nailed to the cross, for these opinions. Apparently, in the US, where most of the posters appear to be from, people check out information at the source before criticizing others, and they make sure they have all the information prior to forming an opinion or making a judgement. I thank all of you for this.

I, too emailed KFWB, but only once, and it was to offer support, and some constructive suggestions. I'm not sure where the 2000 emails came from, but it wasn't me-I have a life, and have to work for my money.

I know I'm taking a chance in expressing my opinion, and that doing so is not welcome here, but I can NOT sit by and let one person be publicly humiliated. How dare you!

Funny, I thought I lived in Canada.

  3. Thanks Yellowcode for weeding out everything and stating things so simply. All we were trying to do was find out which kind of caching people preferred, and if the caching for cash was indeed the direction the sport was taking. Don't worry, we won't be stopping-we just wanted to do what we have already done, and that is to find out what gets you guys out the door. We weren't looking for absolutes or either/or. You guys have NEVER been obligated to read this or respond to it, but we're glad you did! From the original post (if anyone actually remembers it):

    quote:
Does anyone else think that maybe the sport has changed for the worse?
All we were looking for were opinions on if you felt the sport had changed, and boy, did we get them!! icon_biggrin.gif

    quote:
In the meantime I personally think this thread stinks, is boring, and is starting to take away from the fun of caching.

So why did you reply to it?

    quote:
However, the bottom line is who really cares or who really has time to care, if you like it do it if you don’t like it don’t do it. My response to Mariner having starting this thread, and being so persistent in finding out if money is what is motivating people to do some of these caches, is it’s none of your business what motivates me and should really be none of your business what motivates others.

Obviously you have time to care. To quote, if you don't like it, don't reply. It's simple-you should understand that. Why have forums at all, if you want us all to have the same opinion?

    quote:
Time to forget and start having fun it seems like everyone else is / was!

Go for it! At the risk of of sounding redundant-if you don't like it, don't read it, and please don't reply.

Anyway, I didn't want this to be negative. I agree that there has been an irrefutably different element added to the sport. I have never said that I wouldn't do them-as a matter of fact, I'm busy plotting waypoints with our new software, as we speak! icon_smile.gif I enjoy this challenge, but I greatly prefer the simple find after a walk in the woods-THAT is what motivates me, when you get right down to it.

    quote:
To criticize one motivation over another is pointless.
For me, it will never be the goodies and the high ticket items, and I have never criticized anyone for doing so. For me, it is the thrill of the hunt/find(hopefully), and the opportunity to go new places. I will do KFWB caches ,if for no other reason than to get them off my 'undone' cache list! icon_razz.gif

I hope this clears the air. I know where all of you stand. So if you don't mind, it's my day off, it's 15 degrees, and I'm going outside! icon_smile.gif

  4. I would like to enclose excerpts of an email I sent to Team KFWB, but first, I would like to clarify a couple of things:

To GeoChamp: So what you're saying is, if someone has a differing opinion, they should shut up and go away?

When I read the first post in this thread, it is not critical of KFWB in the slightest. All it was intended to do was question the motives of caching for money. If you read further, it is not said that these caches are bad, or should not exist. All we were asking was: If you knew there was no money, no GPS, nothing but a log book and a pen, would you still go there, and do all the work it takes to get there? To date, I don't believe we've gotten an honest answer. Anyway, here is part of what I sent them.

    quote:
You are more than likely aware of the hoopla occurring right now on the forums, and I would like to set the record straight, as I am tired of being misquoted, misinterpreted, and told to be quiet.

I have only done a few of your caches, and plan to do more. I haven't participated in any of the 'Big' competition caches, mainly because I don't have the time and money to, but also because I don't like what is motivating people to cache. I will more than likely do them after all the money and goodies are gone, because, while I enjoy the challenge of working out calculations and projections, caching (for me) is not about competition. It is about going to spectacular places that I would not normally have gotten to, were it not for this awesome sport! I am sure that is part of what motivates you guys to plant them too.

One of the concerns I have raised on the forums, is the sheer volume of caches you guys put out. This is OK, except, I'm afraid that people may not see 'traditional caches' in the sea of KFWB caches. I like planting caches too, and I don't want mine to get skipped over, because it has normal trinkets and goodies, compared to the big ticket items you guys offer. I'm just wondering why anyone would do a normal cache, when there is more, better, cooler stuff out there?

I fear I am being perceived as critical, when that is not the case at all. I just feel overwhelmed by the volume, and feeling the need to 'keep up'. I know there are many beautiful places on the island I can go to plant caches, but with my time/money constraints, I'm afraid that there will be a cache of yours there before I can get there, and I don't like the idea of putting a cache too close to an existing cache. My proposal in the forums was, for the time being, to just let you guys keep planting, and us 'traditional' hiders will take a breather, and go out and find all yours! For some reason, this was perceived as 'whining', and 'sour grapes'. I think it to be a perfectly sane and logical proposal-what do you think?

I don't want to be misjudged for my opinions. Strangely enough, I believe in free speech, and that everyone is entitled to an opinion. Unfortunately, I have been vilified on the forums for holding a slightly different view of your caches. Bottom line is this: I like being challenged, both mentally and physically by your caches. I just feel that I can't compete with you, insofar as volume of hides. That's all I've been trying to say all along. Don't stop planting, by any means. I just think that if you either had your caches on a different page, or didn't capitalize them, then people would be able to see, and have a crack at, the regular caches, if they so choose.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Again, I apologize if I have sounded critical. I just thought it was time that you knew where I was really coming from. Keep it up!

    That's it.

  5. The opinions stated below are strictly mine, and do not reflect those of anyone else-or do they?

I was STARTING to enjoy the odd KFWB cache, and learning how to project waypoints, and do the calculations, but then I saw that they were planning an overwhelming 52 new caches. This just floored me. Why bother?

    quote:
Why/how do all the Team KFWB GPS caches impact on yours?

I don't know why the KFWB caches impact us, perhaps you should ask them that, but as to the how, it's quite simple.

    1) Even though this guideline applies to virtuals, but should apply to real caches, KFWB has plunked caches less than 60m from existing caches. I thought that was a no-no, as was burying the caches, which they have also done. If they're going to put caches so close to an existing cache, one of them obviously has to go, and if they're so intent on saturating the market, they can have it.

    2) People see 80-100 cache names in all in caps (which is another issue-it's rude to type in caps!!) by the same team all in a row, interspersed by the odd 'traditional' cache, they may not see a regular cache posting, if they are so inclined to do one.

    3) In sort of reference to my first point, there are going to be fewer places left to hide caches, if KFWB keeps planting at this level, and because I won't put a cache close to someone else's, what will be left?

    4) I am unfortunately not independently wealthy, nor do I have inordinate amounts of spare time on my hands to plant 50 caches at once, so I either have to plant ordinary, little caches, and hope that maybe someone will see it in the sea of BOLD TYPE, or just let KFWB have the island, the mainland, and wherever else they'd like.

Oh, and before someone pipes in and says "If you don't like them, don't do them", I'd like to say this:

I like the idea of them I just don't like the quantity and the frequency of them. It seems I don't have a choice of caches to do, because it appears that no one else in the area is planting.I think that they should have their own link, or their own page, or something-perhaps 'KFWB Adventure Cache Site' That way, those that want to do strictly KFWB caches, can have their own little space, and we can have our 'traditional' cache page back.

That's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it. Happy caching.

  6. Well, it's that time again! icon_redface.gif Thanks to all of you I've had the supreme pleasure of meeting on the trails and at events this year, the most recent being Team Alpenglow (rallypacific, and Roscoe). I've learned a lot from some of you, but I think the most important thing I've learned in my travels is: SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE JOURNEY! You may never be at this place again in your life-is it a place worth missing for a container full of money and stuff? Don't get me wrong, I like the challenge and the hunt as well, but at the same time I can appreciate the glory of where I am, and I hope all of you can, as well. Happy 2003, fellow cachers-see you on the trails soon! icon_cool.gif

    Cheers cacherunner

  7. As we both have replacement units now, I have pretty much given it up as lost, but I'm going to be in that area today, so will give it another once over. I may go the metal detector route, but I'm not sure if I have the patience! icon_wink.gif I appreciate everyone's help, support and input-it's been really helpful.

And I never noticed that button on his wrist before...hmmmmmmmmmm..... icon_razz.gif

  8. Well, Santa was VERY good to me! icon_wink.gif In addition to my Venture, I got FRS radios, a car mount for the GPS, and a carrying case (is he trying to tell me something? icon_razz.gif) I hope all of you had a peaceful holiday as we did, and happy caching in 2K3!

  9. They're interested in putting one on in Canada-here's what they said:

'We would love to come up north this summer. To consider it, we would need a

good local coordinator and $20,000 in local sponsorship committed to the

race. Would you be interested in tackling the project?'

Never having done something like this, I'm not sure I could tackle this. I could talk to the running club I belong to, and see what they advise in terms of securing sponsorship, etc. To be honest I wasn't expecting such a prompt reply!

If anyone had any advice or ideas, post 'em here! icon_biggrin.gif

  10. I emailed them to see if they would be interested in putting on a race in Canada, as there don't appear to be any here. Even if they don't, I'm sure we could organize something similar. I told them that I know a lot of runners who would be interested in the adventure, and a lot of adventurers who would just like a different kind of challenge-I'll let you guys know what I find out. Happy hunting! icon_wink.gif

  11. Hey C-A

Like you, I cache for the journey and the views, not so much for the cache itself. I choose the places I cache, and I can say that a good 90% of my finds have been to places I wouldn't normally have gone.

The reason that this Urban Challenge thing appeals to me, is it could add a different element to our sport. I think the difference with this is, it involves clue solving, and a knowledge of the city invloved. It seems to be based on how efficiently you can get to the landmarks and checkpoints. I'm not sure that it would be considered caching per se, but it sounded like something different for cachers to try. icon_smile.gif

Speaking of intellectually challenging caches, have you seen any of the Team KFWB caches here in Victoria? Although I like the idea of the challenge, I don't know if I agree with the idea of caching for cash. They HAVE come up with some good puzzles and problems, but you have to wonder about the motivation. Anyway, this is longer than I intended it to be. Thanks for the comments! icon_biggrin.gif

  12. I was skimming my issue of Runner's World Magazine, and came across an article about this sport, and was immediately intrigued! http://www.urbanchallenge.com

The only thing is, there are no challenges in Canada (yet). I've emailed them to see if there is the possibility of putting one on here. It sounds like the sport incorporates some of the elements of caching. You don't necessarily have to be a runner to do it either! I'll see what I can find out.

My question is this: after going over the website, would any of you consider doing this?

    Let me know! icon_biggrin.gif

  13. Like you said, Fallenfaery, it's a great way to get outside, and explore places you might not have otherwise seen. I have been to a few places, where it was just about finding the cache, but I can say that a good 90% of the caches I've found have afforded a spectacular view of some sort-makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it? icon_smile.gif

  14. Re: gazintas and other stuff

That's actually an 'Americanism', specifically from comedian Jeff Foxworthy. It has to do with math i.e. 3 gazinta 9 three times, 5 gazinta 20, four times-you get the idea! icon_smile.gif

The metal detector idea is good, but I'm not sure of how much metal content there actually is. Looks like I'm getting a Venture for Christmas (or earlier), so my motivation for going back is because I hate losing things. As George Carlin said "It doesn't bother me so much that it's lost, but where the hell IS it?" icon_wink.gif

Any possible way I can attach the future Venture to my person, I will-count on it! Thanks everyone for all your input-hope to see y'all on Friday! icon_biggrin.gif

    Found it!

  15. Now all I have to do is remember to use it! icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm going for 1 more look on Sunday, just to satisfy my curiosity. The first couple of times I looked, were in desperation. Now I have a cool, clear head, and lots of time. Who knows? icon_smile.gif

P.S. To Robert M. : You're right-chacun a son gout. as they say! You must be really lucky, really careful, or a bit of both! icon_wink.gif

  16. If I'm not mistaken! I believe it's for hanging the GPS around one's neck, or attaching it to one's wrist, but I could be wrong. Things fall out of pockets, and out of open bags, and even out of hands! If it's attached to you, you'll know it's trying to get lost. It has nothing to do with age or maturity, and everything to do with taking care of one's possessions. For the record, I'm 36, but that's not the issue. The issue is I was responsible for the loss of someone else's property, due to unnecessary carelessness on my part.
