  1. You can enter the logs via the web site using a web browser. On the appropriate cache page, make a log note about "bug visits", select the items you wish to do the visit, click "Submit Log Entry". That should make a "took it to" log on each TB, and you can edit the text for the Trackables on their pages. Mileage shows when the Trackable is dropped (or visited) in the 2nd cache, which is the distance from the first cache. Got it. Thanks! I'm still in learning mode.
  2. I went Geocaching this past weekend and found my 30th cache. I dropped a tag into the cache so that it could start its journey, but I also had a TB patch as well as my trackable walking stick with me. I selected "visit" on the mobile app and logged my information, but when I checked on my patch and walking stick this morning, there are no entries for having been to (and added mileage) their first cache. What did I do wrong? How can I get these two items to show their mileage?
  3. I'm new here, but thought I'd add my two cents' worth. Last month, just after I started geocaching, I found my first trackable. I was very excited! This particular trackable was attached to a traveler, which was fairly sizeable. I wound up holding onto this trackable as well as two others because the caches I found after those first few were so small, that the trackables with travelers simply would not fit! It took a little time for me to find a cache big enough to put the trackable and traveler in so they could move along. Reading your post, I know it has been a long time and that the person who has it has been unresponsive to your requests for information, but being a new geocacher, and wanting to believe the best in others, perhaps this geocacher hasn't kidnapped your TB, but is looking for a good size cache to place it. Sure, it's possible (maybe even probable) that the person has decided s/he wants to keep it, but it may be just as valid to believe that s/he perhaps has not been active due to illness or something of that nature. I sincerely hope that the person who has your TB will eventually return it to the game.
  4. I read the how to log a trackable thread, but didn't see this aspect addressed. I noticed that one of my trackables was taken by another cacher to several different caches before depositing into a final cache. The posts read something to the effect of "So-And-So-1 took it to Cache-Z". I see that it recorded distances, which wound up being added to the trackable's mileage, but looking at the options on the mobile app, I don't see where one would choose a "visit" as the log type. What is the correct way to log a visiting bug at a cache without actually dropping it at the cache and making it part of that cache's inventory? I am interested as I have recently purchased to beautiful geocoins that I intend to keep to begin a collection, but I would also like to activate them and take them along on future trips to log into caches I visit in my travels. Is this an accepted practice? Is this the same way one would track one's trackable walking stick, that's sold on the geocaching website? My apologies for such an elementary bunch of questions, but I'm still new at this and learning. I'm having great fun doing this and have gotten one of my coworkers involved by having her come along during lunchtime to go searching for geocaches in our area a few times a month. While she's not interested in signing up for it herself, she has said that it's fun to do the "treasure hunting".
  5. That's what makes it a trackable prison. If you see that "rule" on the cache page, it should be ignored. Trackables trapped in those types of "hotels" should be liberated. Take as many as you can and get them moving again. Trackables are NOT swag. There is no "take one, leave one" protocol when it comes to trackables. B. +1... ignore that "rule". That "rule", as you put it, is something concocted by the CO. There is no guideline (rule) about such practice. Frankly, I think that Groundspeak does not condone what we call TB prisons. The idea behind a trackable is to move it, not sit in a cache waiting for somebody to come along with another trackable to "trade" for it. Think of it this way..... trackables are designed to 'use' caches. Caches are not designed to 'use' trackables. But it does sound as if it's ok to go ahead and leave swag and/or trackables in order to get them started on their journey and if there's a trackable available, to move it along as well. It's not that I'm trying to treat trackables as swag, rather I just want to give another geocacher in the area incentive to visit a cache that's at an interesting or explorable area in my hometown, such as an area park or landmark.
  6. No, the two original versions are now sold out. I'm told there will be other versions made. I submitted two new ones, but don't know if they'll be used or not. That's a shame. They really are very beautiful. Is there a mailing list I can get on to be notified of future releases of this or other styles? I've only been geocaching for a month or so, so I haven't learned all the good places to check out yet. Thanks!
  7. I placed several trackables in caches over the weekend, and in some cases, I placed two: one of my own and one that I had picked up from elsewhere. I noticed that someone came in after me at a particular cache and removed BOTH of the trackables I placed. Is this ok to do or is it considered poor form? I don't take anything without leaving at least the same amount as I take, whether it's a trackable or a piece of swag. What is the generally accepted protocol for taking/leaving multiple trackables? I would also like to note that while I placed two trackables in this cache, I only removed a single trackable as that's what was available. I have passed up one trackable in favor of another at previous caches, while leaving one of my own to replace what I took. I just would like a little guidance on accepted practices so I can play the game in an honorable manner.
  8. Is this coin still available somewhere? I just stumbled onto this thread and am interested in purchasing one of each style. Please advise.
  9. The way i read that is if the mosaic said "Happiness for all" i would take 3 for "all" x 8 for 24 then I would subtract that 24 from the 251 for 227 and then i would take that same 3 x 3 for 9 and add it to 706 for 715 so the coords would be N 38° 35.227 W 090° 18.715 if the last word was 3 letters If you applied those changes to the "minutes" section before the decimal you would end up with N38 11.251 W90 27.706 which is 46 kilometers away from the posted coords.....cache description also says its a bout 1.5 mile walk round trip so.... I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for your help.
  10. So, coordinates N 000 XX.XXX + --.yy- = location, if I'm reading this correctly. As opposed to N 000 XX.XXX + --.-yy = location. I was adding to the very end, not the first two numbers directly after the decimal. Edit to add: Yes, I got the alert about the log. Thanks for that. I guess this needs to be done online, rather than in the field.
  11. I'm not sure where your note is on my coin page; I pulled up my tracking page and don't see anything out there. Sorry, I'm confuzzled. The cache I'm referring to is GC2HEFP. I want to find this cache because I live here and I've known about this site since I was a kid. When we'd pass by it, I'd always look for the mosaic because I thought it was pretty and it was a sign from the past.
  12. I'm a new Geocacher, having just joined in the last 30 days, and I came across a cache description in my area that I'd like to try to find. However, the cache is not actually at the listed coordinates. Without giving away too much, here's an example based on the information for the cache in question. This cache is listed at coordinates N 000 degrees XX.XXX' x W 000 degrees XX.XXX, but this is actually the location of a sign, intending to give a clue to the final location of the physical cache. Some math is involved, but the gist is that if you add XX to one coordinate and subtract XX from the other coordinate, you get the coordinates of the physical cache. My question is, HOW do you do the addition and subtraction to the coordinates? Do you: N 000 degrees xx.xxx' plus .yyy --------------------- equals xx.zzz or N 000 degrees xx.xxx' plus yy.--- --------------------- equals zz.xxx ??? I'm sorry if this seems like a really dumb question, but I haven't learned how exactly to read coordinates yet and because I'm using an iPhone, I don't even know how (or if!) I can enter coordinates by keying them in. If you can just point me in the right direction on where to look in the community topic postings, I don't mind researching stuff myself. Right now, I'm just too green to know. I will say that I am really enjoying playing this game. I've released a number of trackables and even picked up three, one of which I finally found a cache big enough to release it. (It was attached to a traveler that simply would not fit in any of the caches I'd found up until yesterday.) I still have two more that I want to release, but I have to find caches they'll fit in, due to the size of the attached travellers. On another tangent, I have found several caches that have listed trackables in their inventories, but when I get there, they're gone, without having been logged, I'm guessing, because they still show in the inventory. Since I haven't seen them, I don't have their tracking numbers to submit a note that they're missing. Is there a way to notify someone that they're no longer in the cache and have potentially been muggled? I tried to "Write Note" for one of the items, but without the tracking number, you can't submit a note. Suggestions? Thank you for your help! I appreciate any input I can get that will help me keep having fun with this game as well as helping me to explain it to others who go out with me looking for these things (like my kids and one of my coworkers - I haven't gotten them to sign up yet, but I'm working on it!).
  13. My GPS is my iPhone. There were quite a few trees in the area, so perhaps that coupled with the cloud cover made it difficult to receive accurate information. Thanks!
  14. My daughter and I went out on a drizzly gray day last week to look for a cache not far from our house. We followed the GPA to the general area and searched for about half an hour before giving up. Everytime I'd get "close" with the GPS, it would reset and show the cache was 75 feet in the opposite direction. I'd walk slowly, giving the GPS time to adjust, then be told it was 60 feet in the opposite direction, even if I only walked three feet. We gave up and I looked at the various caches in my area again. I discovered that there are two caches in the general area, apparently within 1000 feet of each other. Is it possible that this was causing the error? Is it possible that the cloudy, rainy day interefered with the GPS readings? I'm a newbie, but I found my first cache fairly quickly. I'm just looking for some tips on this. Thanks!!
  15. Thanks for the tips, guys. I went back and scrolled down to find the older logged information. And I went back to the travel bug and "placed" it in the cache online. I appreciate your help!
  16. I'm brand new at this... I found my first geocache today and put a tracking bug in the container and signed the log before putting it back in its hiding spot. When I got back to the office, I went online to make a note that I'd found the cache. After posting my comments, I looked at the post online and saw... just my own post. I thought the idea behind this was to see what others had written about the cache after finding it. Kind of like Where's George or Bookcrossing. Am I missing something or do I just not know how to look up these things?
