  1. Is this a good forum for me to post my description for some feedback on content before I set up and submit a cache page, or is there a better place for critiques?
  2. Yes, the rock was chosen because it's typical of the region: it's limestone and excellent for making a beer cave. Many beer barons of yesteryear utilized the cave system under the city for such storage. This particular 'created cave' happens to be outside the city limits in the county.
  3. I have been wanting to create an earthcache about caves and have researched the topic, but the location I wanted to use is a privately-owned commercial entity which would be an EXCELLENT place to learn about caves, but I have never received a response from them. That sucks, but with some modifications to my description, I can rewrite it to be applicable to almost any cave in my area. There happens to be a cave in a local park which supports geocaching and because of the relationship between our local organization and the county, geocachers have blanket permission to place caches in the public parks, which means that this cave would be a good place to consider placing an earthcache. Here's the rub: The cave is not 100% "natural". It is certainly a cave. It is certainly not man-made; it is a natural area, not bricks, for example. However, it has been MODIFIED by man. This is a natural area which was excavated to become a "beer cave" back in the days that brewers needed some place to keep their wares cool. Given this information - that the cave is a natural stone formation, but it has been modified by man in that it was excavated for commercial purposes - would this cave still be considered a "cave" and "eligible" to be described as an earthcache? Your thoughts?
  4. Hello! I was one of the lucky recipients of a Celebration Event. I'm in the process of planning the event and want to have a cake with a geocaching logo on it. I know there are free-use logos on the internet, but I'm looking for the anniversary logo. Has one been released yet? If not, is there a release date planned? (Maybe May 2?)
  5. After the latest update, when I tap on a new notification, the cache opens up on Safari instead of in the app. This has happened in the past but I don’t recall how to fix it. Can anyone help?
  6. PS, just to clarify, since earthcaches are geology-based, it is not necessary to include chemical reaction equations in descriptions even if they're present, right?
  7. There are no earthcaches nearby. I'm not sure why this location hasn't been the subject of one before now. It's a pretty obvious place to set one up. That said, I plan to visit it over the weekend to see if I can speak with the staff/rangers about obtaining information to create an earthcache. Yes, there is an admission fee, however, the entryway of the cave - probably 50-75 feet? - is accessible for free; it's the waiting area for the tour into the fenced-off area. This is why I want to visit the location to see what lessons can be done just from this area, but I would include descriptions of the formations on the inside of the caves. I'm also planning on taking a tour of the cave so I can get my own photos of formations to be used in the description as visual examples so that visitors do not HAVE to go into the cave. I want to make this earthcache easy enough that a child could do it, so I'm writing it with terminology but with simple definitions. I'm hoping that this will make it more 'publishable'. Thoughts?
  8. I've been reading the FAQs on both geocaching.com and the links provided to the Geological Society of America and I've found that to be helpful. Right now, I'm just doing general research on the various topics to see what might be feasible as lessons. I still have to revisit the actual cave site to see if the lessons are still applicable. (One has historical significance, but that alone is not acceptable for an earthcache, according to the rules. I can still turn it into an earthcache - I think - but only if I can show the geologic value.)
  9. I'm looking at the possibility of wanting to create an earthcache at a well-known cave. It's a tourist attraction, so the place is manned by rangers and staff; it's not just some hole in the ground in the middle of nowhere. Presuming that when I contact the managers at this location, that I obtain permission to 'place' an earthcache here, can anyone tell me if it's 'allowable' to set up more than one earthcache at a single location? I'm asking because there are potentials to do an earthcache based on the geologic makeup of the place; significance of the same place as a mineral source for gunpowder at one time; the types of formations within the cave; the river system at the same location, etc., etc. I'm in the beginning stages of research for ideas for this area, but I can see where there might be potential to set up a 'cluster' of earthcaches because the subject matter available here could be overwhelming for a single earthcache. (It would be very, very long.) I recently visited and logged a small cluster of earthcaches, and while they were related, they weren't all on top of one another - though they were within an easy walking distance. I really enjoyed the opportunity to check out these natural phenomena, especially since it allowed me to log multiple types of earthcaches within a small area: cave, river, bedrock, etc. In looking at the area I'm considering, there's potential for so many earthcache-type lessons, so I'd like to maximize the potential for smileys. Is this me being overexcited and ridiculous, or...?
  10. Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions! I have bookmarked several pages you have suggested and will look at them this weekend. (They tend to frown on it during work hours... imagine that...)
  11. Then let me ask you this: What are the various types of acceptable earthcaches these days? In my area, they mostly focus on limestone, crinoids, seismic activity (how high is the upthrust at this location?!), and such, however, I have visited earthcaches on marshes and other non-rock (which is what a lot of earthcaches seem to be about... rocks). Science was never my strong subject in school, but I've done enough earthcaches that I'd like to try my hand at actually learning something and presenting it in a way so that others can learn about it, too. It would help if I know what's fair game for publication these days. Someone else suggested I contact a local university's geology department for help, but before I can do that, I need to know what's okay to even be submitted. I have to admit, I'm bummed about the horsetails because I thought they were very interesting and I loved that the earthcache wasn't about rill erosion in a karst topography with limestone nodules found in down-thrusted layers. (Lots of that sort of thing in my state, which is why I was interested in doing something completely different, like the horsetails.)
  12. This is exactly why I wanted to get some feedback from one of the geoaware reviewers, but I've gotten no responses when I've tried contacting them. I don't know who else to ask.
  13. Yes, the CO of the one I want to replicate did offer some advice, but I need more. I tried reaching out to one or two of the publishing reviewers and got no response.
  14. This is the earthcache I would be replicating: https://coord.info/GC1VNRG, but in Missouri, as it applies here. I would not be duplicating it, but the descriptions would be similar in that they are for the same earthcache feature: horsetails. These living fossils are also found in my region, along river areas, in abundance. I definitely want to make the lesson my own, but I'm not an expert. In searching for state-specific information, I've found that there's actually very little written about horsetails as it pertains to my state. On the other hand, I'm not a Google master, and sometimes I just can't come up with the right combination of search keywords to come up with the jackpot of information. If anyone can help me to find a good source of information, I'd really appreciate it.
  15. I have an idea for an earthcache based on one I found in another state, but which can easily be replicated in my home state. I have a location and some general information, but I'd like to discuss my topic with someone who is knowledgeable about earthcaches before I go through the process of writing it up and submitting it, in the hopes that I can do it right the first time. Are there any earthcache 'mentors' out there who are willing to talk about submission guidelines and offer pointers on what makes a good earthcache? I know that there are websites and some FAQ pages available, but I work better with discussion and feedback.
  16. If it's any help, the cache in question is GC77BDN.
  17. I saw that a new geocache was published, when it came across my phone via the geocaching notifications. I clicked on it and saw it on my map, but as I wasn't ready to go hunting for it, I clicked on another nearby cache. The cache that was just published VANISHED FROM THE MAP. I refreshed my app. I closed my app and relaunched it. I tried turning my phone completely off and back on. I relaunched the app. The new cache does not appear on my geocaching app map. I checked with my friend and it shows up just fine on hers. The only way I can view the cache on my phone's app is if I either go to the original link in the notification or bring it up using its GC code. Once I select another nearby cache, however, it vanishes from my map. I don't know what to do about this. Any suggestions?
  18. Email sent. I hope you have some left!
  19. I received the coins Monday - they are OUTSTANDING! The artwork and design are gorgeous! I gave a coin and proxy to my dad, have another coin and proxy for my brother and am keeping the last for me.
  20. Brilliant! I've sent an e-mail to you about ordering details for the coins. The images look beautiful!
  21. I received a flyer for this item in an order from GxProxy.com. That's all fine and dandy... but no instructions on HOW I can order them! This would be a great gift for my brother who is a Buster Keaton fan. How/Where can I get a couple?
  22. I'm a derp. I found this: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/default.aspx If anyone has more information, please let me know.
  23. Can anyone provide a link to the description of benchmarks? How do they differ from Geocaches? How do I get them to show up on my Geocaching app so I can search them out?
  24. Nope, unfortunately, what has been done cannot be undone. Sorry.
