  1. I have to agree with StarBrand. The Palm interface automatically decrypts as it is transferred. Many's the time I have just had to scroll down in the Palm and the clue is all ready for me.
  2. I have 2 Blue Etrex units, one GPSMAP60, and a GPSMAP60cx. All will get me to within a reading of 15' accuracy in clear weather with no cover. Only the 60cx will give me an accuracy reading of less than 5 feet under a tree canopy. My conclusion is that yes, newer is better, but also antenna, programming, and cost are also factors.
  3. Well, I just forced myself to watch the first 6 1/2 minutes of video. I believe your idea will make a good show dedicated to those armchair watchers who sit idly by watching adventure movies that they will never have a chance of participating in. It may also appeal to Rambo wannabes looking for adventure doing things that they have no clue about. For adventure and exercise seeking families, the message is way too strong in touting the bushwhacking and the snake handling aspect. I have caches here, where bear scat is common on the trails, moose will face you down on a trail, or you may come face to face with a 30# porcupine guarding a cache. I have even stirred up a bobcat or two sleeping on a hide. My point is, your attitude and bush knowledge preclude about 95% of your target audience, if you want to convert the average couch potato viewer to geocaching. If you tone down the bleeps and the bushwhacking it may get families and individuals interested in taking up the sport. Of course, it's just my opinion, but I thought I would throw my 2 cents (Cdn) into the pot.
  4. Please enlighten us. Are you speaking about a microwave oven, or something else common that I fail to recognize from your description? Now you have me thinking!
  5. During my tests, I had 2 double A batteries inside the preform as ballast to keep it submerged. When smashing the ice block off the preform, and later, hitting the container direct on with an 8# sledge, the batteries were still bouncing around inside, with no padding. One more thing I have noticed in found logs, since introducing these containers to the wild here, are comments about how difficult it is to remove the log. It appears that the preform is tapered toward the bottom, and rolled up logs tend to become wedged in. My latest innovation is borrowed from nano caches placed by another hider here. Secure the rolled up log to a stick, straw, whatever, before rolling. Leave your stick slightly longer than the log to allow a finger grip in order to extract the paper. I have gone to the dollar store and purchased a package of bamboo skewers which are cut to the proper length. Total cost, $1 for 100 skewers. Mag Magician, formerly Team Magic
  6. Some members keep a running tally on archived caches, as I do. I use the numbers to calculate the total number of placed caches in an area. It is very possible that another member in your area has a list or database in his/her GSAK. Unfortunately for you, this is a hunt and peck type method of searching, and very few take the time or energy.
  7. Being that this is the most recent thread on this subject, I would like to bump it back up. I recently attempted to gift a premium membership to a friend, and was told quite nicely by Groundspeak that it was only possible by check, or credit card. I wanted my friend to access pocket queries that very weekend, so this was not an option. What I finally did was e-mail the friend, got her password to her new personal account, and signed in as her. At that point, I was able to use my Paypal to immediately convert her to a premium member. While this may be feasible with very close friends, it is not a valid method, considering security scares in this day and age. I would like to see Groundspeak reinitiate, revive, or renew the option of using paypal to upgrade or renew an account other than our own. Please? Pretty pretty please?
  8. So-o-oo, do you mean by first name, or just by their reviewer handle?
  9. So far, I have discovered that long weekends are terrible for attendance at a geo event. Most people have family commitments or other plans that keep them away in droves. JMHO
  10. Leaves turn yellow? I thought they turned red! Oops, I live next to a sugar bush. OK carry on.
  11. I just happen to own one, with Ibycus topo loaded. It travels on my ATV in the bush, and works great for that purpose.
  12. OK, put me behind BQ's corner on this one. Terrain means how vigorously my heart is trying to get out of my chest between car and cache. Of course that also includes how many rocks scraped the bottom of the Dakota in 4WD getting that far. Difficulty is how hard I have to think or search to reach my goal of nabbing a smiley.
  13. I own a 60 as well as a 60cx. The 60cx will get you to the right roads, depending on the mapping installed. After arriving at the jump off point, it is necessary to turn off the "follow road" feature and instead, lock onto the cache itself. It can, and will, take you to within 3 feet of ground zero depending on reception in the area.
  14. Is this what you want? http://www.gov.ns.ca/geonova/services/wfs/ns_topo1-10000.asp edit: On further exploration, Dale, you need to go here in IE. This link does not support Firefox. http://142.176.62.102/DataLocator31ASP/Sea...eofaction=login
  15. Very interesting! The above post in now part of the OPs profile.
  16. Hmm, is that why my spidey.....er-r-r-r..........geosense caused me to not reply in this thread? Oops, just to be on topic...........Who cares?
  17. He(double)l, back in 1965, I was accosted by a pedophile and that was way before any pictures, blogs, profiles or anything nearly resembling the internet was even thought of. If someone wants to abuse a kid, it is in their nature. It's not something that is made any easier or harder to a wierdo, by posting an innocent kid pic on a web site. In 1980, my son was accosted by a pedophile. Yes, it happens! Yes, we should take care of our children's education on how to recognize and deal with adversities. Posting an innocent pic on a website does not make some child the immediate interest of an attacker, but with additional information, a local abuser, and the opportunity, it could happen. So, it's 10 o'clock. Do you know where your kids are?
  18. Since I don't get Discovery channel on my basic satellite service, can someone tell me what this is all about? I have been to the web site, saw my cache featured (South River Inlet) and tried to find out more. Links are bad and don't tell you anything. Is this feature actually being run on television? If so, why is there no log on my cache pages by a television crew? Sorry, I am being confused by all this.
  19. One of the caches being represented belongs to me. I have no idea why or how, or from the website determining what this is all about. Can anyone fill me in? Is Ed McMahon planning to visit my cache, or should I just count on it being muggled in the next few weeks.
  20. On another tangent, why not a regular cache hidden behind the water curtain of a small waterfall? The only way to retrieve the container would be to get your arm and/or head wet during most of the year. Mag Magician, formerly Team Magic
  21. I would suspect, because of Signal's preponsity to continually jumping off of hard objects being inserted in his/her nether regions, that Signal may just be a male. It seems that every one of those metal objects were very carefully inserted with love and concern, but Signal has managed to elude the constant probing on more than a few occasions.
  22. WOW! There are posts in here from both sides. And, most are so adamant about their own stance on the subject. If I made an honest attempt to find a cache, and did not get the opportunity to sign the on-site logbook, as stated in the guidelines, it is a DNF, and I will post that to the on-line log. Most times the explanation is included in the on-line "just because" it keeps the owner updated on the condition of their hide.
  23. OK, I would be tempted to err on the safe side of this one, as in NOT! It is well known that capsicum is used as a bear repellent, and the main ingredient of MACE, but many backwood hikers have been killed or maimed by bears who just don't care. I can see some unread animal smelling the Tobasco and investigating just for the helluvit, thereby destroying someones well thought out cache.
  24. IMHO, bragging rights for a FTF are all in whether you put FTF, or whatever keyword on your on-line log. Then, when you distill your "my finds" PQ from Groundspeak, it shows automatically as a first to find in whatever generator you want to use to post your stats. I have been offered a co-FTF on a few caches but because another person was the first to sign the on site log, you will not find these as a FTF in my stats. It's just the way I play the game, and others will play it the way they want. You have made the offer on your cache page. Let the next person who actually signs the log claim whatever rights he/she deserves, and let the liar claim whatever they want.
