  1. I'm making my plans for GeoWoodstock in July and want to include the APE cache as part of the trip. How far and what kind of hiking is required for the APE cache? My non-hiking but cache-supportive spouse will be with me and I need to know if she'll have any trouble with the hike. Any APE-experienced cachers have knowledge that will help me out?
  2. Will there be a GeoHamsterWoodstock this year?
  3. Since this is merely a fantasy, I might as well go out on a limb. I'd likely submit a virtual cache, a locationless cache, and for good measure, I'd throw in a brand-new Project: APE cache.
  4. I have a former ALR cache with a similar concept and bogus hide date. Daylight Saving Time Machine GC1HTTN
  5. There may only be 200 of us Waymarkers, but we are an elite group. No new ones are accepted into the group (with hazing ceremony and blazer) until another of our group dies (usually by stepping off a cliff while watching the GPS).
  6. I've seen an "unstealable" ammo box chained to a tree. After seeing (and smelling) what the thwarted cache thief did to the cache, I'm inclined to believe that those who are motivated to do injustices to a cache will have their way, no matter what.
  7. I had warned several cachers against using my Daylight Saving Time Machine (ALR) cache (GC1HTTN) in a local Busy Day Challenge cache because of a conflict in the requirements of both caches. The Busy Day cache required cachers to find six different types of caches (traditional, multi, mystery, virtual, etc) in one 24-hour period. This conflicted with my ALR in that all on-line logs had to be dated in the past (via time travel at the cache vortex and the drop-down dates on the cache page). One cacher tried it anyway and almost messed up his carefully planned Busy Day Challenge. I guess he took me seriously when I deleted his non-ALR compliant log (accepted practice at the time). He was free to re-log his find after he figured out a way to meet restrictions on both caches (which he did after a flurry of emails to both COs).
  8. Here's an idea for a new ALS cache called Disclaimer. The ALS "suggests" that the cache finder agree to the terms and conditions in the geocaching.com disclaimer. This notation is included on all cache pages: Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.
  9. I am among the greatest of admirers of the Groundspeak volunteer reviewers and gratefully acknowledge their tireless dedication to the greatest of all outdoor activities. Many ALR owners are bummed because they are having to change previously approved caches. I don't know if past guideline changes have been this far- reaching in requiring changes like this without regard to grandfathering past caches. Even virts, webcams, and early earthcaches were grandfathered in when the rules changed.
  10. I'm still trying to find the VOLUNTARY CACHE Attribute on the cache page. I hate for anyone to feel like they were forced to find any of my caches, ALR or not.
  11. What do you carry in your first aid kit?
  12. Is anyone using this for creating puzzle caches?
  13. I'm using GSAK and Cachemate for paperless caching and have recently changed over to a new laptop. Needless to say some of my software settings are wrong. The hints on Cachemate are defaulting to Decode rather than Encode. Any ideas where this might be happening and how I can fix it?
  14. I think that there's an interesting mystique attached to some of these "in plain sight" caches. I often wonder how many times I passed such caches unaware before I started caching. I believe that many of those in the muggle world don't notice them because they assume that the objects belong there. Have you checked to see how long some of them have lasted in these "plain sight" hide locations?
  15. Here's a list of the Belly of the Beast caches in the Birmingham, AL area based on a similar series in Huntsville, AL: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b9-026f26315c83 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b3-21b29fb666bb http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...65-b59831a8f017 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...77-3e663258bc89
  16. Stung by a wasp which I am allergic to while seeking a local multi-stage puzzle cache. I ended up in the emergency room and still DNFed the cache.
  17. Add this one to your lexicon too. TAF=Text A Friend"
  18. My 60csx is named "Dudley" because of the sound he makes during turn-by-turn. "Dudley. Dudley" That means, "Dudley says, "Turn right here." Or "Turn left on Dudley Road."
  19. My signature item is literally that...my signature. Over the years, I've taught myself to "mirror-write" or write backwards. So I "mirror write" my note in the cache logbook. When I log my find online, I avoid cut & paste entries by making my log unique and entertaining. Cost? Nothing but my time.
  20. In addition to all the above stated AGA propaganda (which happens to be 100 percent true), what I like best about the Alabama Geocaching Association is the ability to connect geocachers of all experience levels. We embrace brand-new cachers and help them "network" with more experienced addicts. It makes learning about the world's greatest pasttime easier. Anyone looking for a caching partner for a cache trip can usually find one via the Dixie Cachers website even if it's someone you've never cached with before. That in itself makes the AGA the best in the country.
  21. FYI, the Wherigo website has been tagged as Games and is being blocked by WebSense. There's no specific forum for Wherigo.com so I posted this message here. Maybe there should be Groundspeak Forum categories for Wherigo and Waymarking as well as GC.com. Or am I missing something. (name change. Wherigo had too many e's - J)
  22. We could always try letterboxing. They use hints and location descriptions instead of sattelite coords. Do you have inside knowledge that we're losing our satellite signals. Hopefully the U.S. military won't shoot them down when they try to intercept the falling spy satellite.
