  1. I'm going to try and make it. I haven't had the chance to do much caching lately. My New Years resolution is to get out and find more, so this will be a good chance.
  2. You could find my two: Bass Island Cache or Covered in Moss Covered in Moss is a miniature version of my favorite cache to date which is out at East Fork House of Raptor I just dropped two new TBs in Bass Island Cache.
  3. Welcome fellow Ohio cacher! Do a search for your zipcode or the zipcode in the area you found the cache and click on some to see if their description matches the cache you found. If that doesn't work, visit the cache again and see if the owner wrote the name on or inside the cache. If that doesn't work, don't worry about it. Just start searching for others in your area. And, yes, the Garmin eTrex is a fine unit to start out with. That is what I have and I've wished for a better unit on only a few occasions. The majority of the time, the eTrex does exactly what I need it to do.
  4. The problem I've run into when caching on my bike is I hate having to leave my bike unattended if the terrain requires. I just had a bike stolen from my driveway recently. I don't want someone to come across my unattended bike in the woods, grab it and take off.
  5. I love the skull idea. But, I'm wondering. If a muggle happens to stumble on it and calls the police rather than find out it is not real. Would you have any legal responsibility for that?
  6. I received a new cord from the supplier in the mail today and the program works without a problem. All this time it was the cable that was the problem. Thanks for the help!
  7. Hynr: I did everything you listed. Still the same problem. It says "ERROR: GPS Timed Out: Can't Init Comm 4" When I was checking the ports under the advanced menu, where you can change all the COMM ports, it did list COMM 3 (in use). So, I tried changing everything over to COMM 3 to see if that made a difference. Same problem. My dad also has a etrex and I'm going to see him this weekend. I'm going to try his etrex with the same cable and adapter and see if I can eliminate the GPS from the problem. Any other suggestions to try?
  8. Did this and it shows me COMM4 for the device. Driver has been installed from adapter CD, unistalled and reinstalled a couple of times. When I plug the cable in, the computer gives me the new hardward bubble then recognizes it as a Belkin Serial-to-USB. I'm using Windows XP if that matters. Also, when I use EasyGPS, it gives me the option to select COMM4 it just doesn't do anything after that. I'm not using anyother serial-to-usb devices. I use a digital camera, printer, and cell phone through USB cables. No PDA, Hotsync, Mapsource or anything like that. I'm having another cable sent to me and I am considering taking the adapter back and getting a different brand one somewhere else. I got this Belkin adapter at Circuit City. Has anyone gotten one anywhere else that has worked for them?
  9. Yes, it is. I've also tried GSAK and it give me a similar message that says "Can't INIT COMM 4" or COMM 3 if that is the case. I've done everything the help sections from both programs suggest, which really isn't very much, and still no luck. The green light comes on for the serial to USB adapter meaning it is working but no data is getting transfered through the cable. Should there be anything on the screen of my etrex indicating it is connected? For instance, when I plug my cellphone into my computer, the screen has an icon letting me know it is ready for data transfer. I'm trying to determine if it is the etrex, the cable, the adapter, or the computer causing the problems.
  10. bump....hoping someone can help me out. Thanks
  11. Thanks for the help. I now have my computer recognizing the port and I've set everything up in EasyGPS. But, when I go to send or receive information, it gives me this message: "No Data was received from the GPS" All the EasyGPS help tells me to do is set up the interface on the GPS unit which is already at the required setting. Any suggestions to solve this problem? And again, thanks for the help with the rest.
  12. I have the etrex and recently got the pc cable so I could download waypoints to it. I got the serial to USB adaptor and downloaded EasyGPS software. The problem is I can't get me computer to recognize where the GPS unit is. It keeps searching COM ports which it isn't connected to and when I try to select USB, it says no USB ports are available. If I try to do it through EasyGPS, the port click down menu is blank and offers no options. Any suggestions?
  13. I posted on FreeCycle and got a free one. Maybe you could try that?
  14. I need someone in Anchorage or vicinity to place a travel tag in a cache in Anchorage. Here's why.... I was born in Anchorage at Elmendorf. My dad and I are going camping in Shakamak State Park near Terre Haute, Ind for Father's day. I am creating a cache to hide in the park that my dad will find with his gift inside. I would love it if this traveling tag could make it from Anchorage to Indiana in time for Fathers Day. If not, my dad will have fun tracking it online until it gets near enough for him to collect it. If you can help me out, just email me your mailing address and I can send it to you. Once dropped, just email me the location and I can log it online so that its journey can begin. Thanks for anyone who can help.
