  1. I flew from Portland, OR to Dayton, OH with my 60CSx and the altimeter wasn't even close to accurate, then I got to thinking that the altitude on that GPSr is not based on the altitude calculated by the satellites, but by the barometric pressure, and the airlines pressurize the cabin to around 6,000 feet. Is that assumption correct and why my altitude was always so low? I was on an American Airlines flight from PDX to ORD with no problems then the puddle jumper to Dayton got the flight attendant all riled up when she told me GPSr's are forbidden on aircraft. I am an amateur radio licenced operator, and to my knowledge, a GPSr sends out no harmonics or any kind of signal that will multiplex and affect any aircraft frequency. It is only a receiver.
  2. I use GSAK to download waypoints to my 60CSx. I used to do it using MapSource, now directly with the new patch. Either way, If I choose %smart=6 %con1(%dif1 %ter1) for example, then download the waypoints, when I go to the Geocaching icon on the 60CSx and look at the downloaded cache names, I see 8 characters, then everything is truncated after that, even though the 60CSx appears to have much more room across the display to show more characters. Does anyone know how to make the 60CSx show more characters? Under the Note section, the same thing occurs. It appears there is alot more room in the notes window on the 60CSx to put info, but it truncates as well. Thanks, Geofindr.
  3. The beauty of geocaching.com and PQ's, is the ability to filter out micro's if you only want to search for standard caches. If a person does not want to search for micros, they can just search for traditional caches. I prefer the standard traditional caches, so I filter out the micros. What is one person's frustration is another's joy. That is what is so great about geocaching and the variety of caches it provides.
  4. I have the GPSMap 60CSX, and it always directs me within 20 feet of a cache or closer. I purchased a Legend Cx for my daughter and family and we were both out geocaching. We only were able to search for one cache with both gps'r working, so the sample size is pretty small, but as usual, my gpsr took me right to the cache. My error was 20 feet. The legend Cx showed an error of 25 feet. it directed my daughter probably 40 feet in a different direction from the cache. Is that just part of the variability from unit to unit? Thanks, geofindr.
  5. I am pretty new to geocaching. I have a travel bug that was picked up yesterday from a cache in Western Oregon and dropped of in what appears to be an event cache near Bend. That cache currently has 32 travel bugs in it. What happens to all the TB's when the event is over? Do those at the event go back to the cache and pick up a different TB and take it with them to be placed someplace else? Thanks, geofindr
  6. I sure have been missing alot of perks! how did is miss all those?? Seriously, I don't think it is a question of "what are the benefits." Even though Pocket Queries are worth it to me alone, there are other more important reasons: 1. Geocaching.com is THE only place where we as geocachers have to really make our hobby work. It is the central clearing house for all caches. It tells us when new caches have been placed, we can track TB's, etc. etc. etc. For no other reason, we as geocachers should support Geocaching.com as a matter of principle. We drive 30 miles and spend $3.00 for gas, but balk at spending $3.00 a MONTH for something that gives us so much benefit. 2. See #1. 3. See #1 4. See #1 That about says it. If we gain benefit we should support it. geofindr.

    Missing Tb

I am pretty new to geocaching. Our first cache, Peavy Arboretum, shows that "lost lock key chain" TB was logged into our cache. Later someone logged that there were not TB to pick up. I checked the cache today, and the "lost lock key chain" TB is not there. I have started contacting folks who visited the cache between the time it was dropped and reported missing. If none of them say they picked it up, what do I do, as a cache owner, to remove that TB from being listed in my cache? I really hate to see a TB go missing! Thanks, geofindr.
  8. I own the 60CSx and just bought the Legend Cx for my daughter. I have used both and they are both very good units. The Legend Cx is so lightweight! The only real difference is the receiver sensitivity, but if you are not in heavy tree cover, it won't make any difference which unit you choose. Both will autoroute if you want them to, the software in each seems to be about the same. The buttons are different to access things. I actually like the LegendCx because you can do it all with one hand, whereas the 60CSx requires one hand to hold the unit and another to push the buttons on the front of the gps. You can't go wrong with either. Geofindr.
  9. I just purchased an automotive navigation kit from GPSNow for my daughter's Legend CX. I ordered it specifically so I could upload the City Select software on her computer and download the software. She is driving 500 miles and will leave for home Monday. The garmin automotive nav kit arrived today has City Select V6.02. Any ideas how I can get Garmin to get me an updated version quickly? I assume they will substitute the latest version 7, or even City Navigator 7, since it is a Legend Cx and could use that software as well? Anyone else ever have this problem getting outdated software in a new purchase? Thanks, Geofindr
  10. I recommended that my mom get Garmin StreetPilot c330. She has almost the exact same needs as your daughter--user friendly, touch screen, easy to input addresses/locations/POIs. It also does not require any uploading of maps(it comes preloaded) and is set up around a very simple interface. Is it possible to update the map data in a C330 with a new release of Street Select or Street Navigator when they come out or are you stuck with the pre-loaded maps forever? Need a simple unit for my wife as well. She fell in love with the GPS her last business trip, but I don't want to be locked into sharing it all the time. I am not greedy, but sometimes she leaves for weeks at a time and while she is gone is my prime time for going cache hunting. Sort of defeats the purpose to have the GPSr gone with her while I am home alone spinning my wheels. I bought the StreetPilot 2720 in January and you can upload maps to it. I love it! It is a bit more pricey than the c330. I wound NOT get the 2730. It runs almost $!000 and it has XM radio and ability to store and play MP3 files. For $45 a person can get an XM radio that is a far better interface than the 2730. So, if you want uploadable waypoints, POI's and maps, the 2720 is a good unit to consider. Geofindr.
  11. It seemed to fix itself. I will remember that for later, though. Thanks
  12. Depending on how often you use the Cx, you may want to consider regular alkaline batteries. Any rechargable will lose its charge while sitting in your unit even if it is off. That is the nature of all rechargeable batteries. Alkaline batteries don't. A 15 minute charger is sure the way to go if you do choose rechargables, because you will find yourself always recharging prior to going out for the day. I just decided to use alkaline for now until I see what my usage pattern is. I have the GPSMAP 60CSx. I just ordered the Legend Cx for my daughter and it will arrive today. It looks like a great GPS and I think the user interface and button position is easier than my 60Csx. Just remember to set the hardware to let it know which type of battery you are using. Geofindr
  13. I bought my USA TOPO for the CSx on Amazon.com for as good a rate as ebay. geofindr.
  14. I have read somewhere on this site that the problem is the number of map segments are limited to a certain number. You may want to do a search on that. Practically, I load only the areas I am going to be in and that is typically Oregon and Washington, and I add the topo maps for that region too. That takes about 118 mb and that is fine for my 256mb card in my6 60CSx. Do a search on map segments, and that should tell you what the upper map segment limit is. That would be one advantage of City Navigator over City Select. Geofindr
  15. I have a Garmin StreetPilot 2720 and a GPSMAP 60Csx that I use personally and have just bought a Garmin Legend Cx for my daughter. I would not even consider a Magellan right now. They seem to be focusing on automobile units. Their technical support is not as good as Garmin's and the firmware updates to make their products better are few and far between. The firmware upgrades on my Garmins have been nice and frequent as well. It is nice to see a company listen to their users and improve the units after you buy one and can reap the benefits of that improvement at no cost. Garmin is the way to go. Now you just have to decide which unit to buy. There are many threads on the verious products. I would encourage you, if your budget allows, to buy either a Legend Cx, Vista Cx, GPSMAP 60Cx or 60CSx. All of these have a removable/upgradeable memory card to store maps and POI's on. All will autoroute if you want to use them for car navigation as well. They are not as good as the dedicated units like the streetpilots, but they work jiust as well, just no verbal cues. Good luck on your choice. Geofindr
  16. I sure don't see anything wrong with that, as long as the same amount of items go back in the cache. I am new as well, so I am not an authority on this. Perhaps a more experienced cacher could reply. It just make sense to me that as long as the amount of items is the same when you leave as when you arrive, then it shouldn't make any difference.
  17. And people wonder why once good companies struggle and finally go out of business...There is just one simple rule of building a strong business: Meet and exceed the needs of your customer in all areas. Sounds like Magellan doesn't care that much about their customer base, especially the loyal customers who built their business using handheld units. I had an old Garmin III. I was in the market for a new GPS. I read the reviews, went to the Garmin and Magellan website and it was pretty clear which way I would invest my dollars. I bought the Garmin StreetPilot 2720 and last month, the GPSMAP 60CSx for geocaching....and autorouting when traveling by plane and renting a car. I just purchased a Garmin Legend Cx for my daughter. That is money that Magellan could have had, if they just had a better product, firmware updates, and support. All my units are awesome. Firmware updates have been frequent and each seems to improve performance. I will say that tech support has been a bit spotty, though. I could not get my second unlock code on City Nav NA7 NT that came with my StreetPilot to unlock my GPSMap 60CSx. One tech support guy emailed me back and forth and said that Garmin only issued one onlock code for units with preloaded software. I called Garmin back a couple weeks later to ask some questions abouth the Legend Cx I am buying for my daughter and was told that CN NA7NT is not compatible with handheld units, at least not the NT version. When I got home, just for grins I tried to unlock one last time doing the same thing I had done many times before and magically, I got an unlock code for my GPSMAP 60CSx. Now I can view CN NA7 maps on it. I am glad I could do that, but it would have been nice to get the correct info from Garmin. On other calls I have had excellent support. I guess no one can be perfect, but my units sure have been great! Geofindr.

    Tb Mileage

I am a pretty new geocacher and started three travel bugs. They have left my cache and each have traveled to their next cache. When I look at them on geocaching.com, i can see how many miles they have traveled since this is their first drop, but they still show that they have traveled "0" miles. Is there something I need to do to update the miles traveled, or is geocaching.com just not doing that right now. Thanks, Terry
  19. My 60cx shows GPS SW Version = 2.30. How does one know if that is up to date or not? It also shows BETA Software - 2.62 I could find nothing on the Garmin site regarding the SW Version. I think the GPS SW Version is the original version that was put into the machine at the factory. I could be wrong, though. Just so the top version is the current one, that is important.
  20. I have the CSx and love it. I like the compass and altimeter both. If you think you would ever use either of these, I would just bite the bullet and spend the extra 40 -50 bucks and get it. You will spend more than that on gasoline on your first few geocaching trips and probably never even think about it.
  21. I must be blind, but I cannot find any reference in the manual that discusses the round blue circle that surrounds the arrow pointer in map view on my 60CSx. Can someone tell me how to turn that off? Thanks, Terry
  22. Thank You! Thank You! I did not realize I could press menu again when the informaiton icon was showing the list of maps. When I did, I found the screen in Sputnik 57's example. That is so wonderful to find that. Now I can load up my card with all the segments I need! I love this resource and all the folks willing to share information! Terry
  23. I have a 60CSx with a 256MB Transflash card. I also use Garmin's MapSource to download maps to the GPSr. I have both City Navagator North America 7 and USA Topo maps on MapSource. I highlight areas on the Topo Map to download and areas on the CN7 and then download both maps. I know that the CN7 takes precedent even if the topo maps are loaded, too. Here is my question. When maps are displayed and I go to the menu and to the MapSetup screen, it lists all the map segments downloaded, and all my topo maps are first. There are many loaded for all of Washington and Oregon. The last two entries are the OR and WA CN7 maps. Is there some way to order the download sequence in MapSource so that when I look atht he MapSetup screen, it shows the CN7 segments first then the topo maps? It would be so much easier to uncheck the two CN7 map segments if they were first on the list instead of last, to be able to get to my Topo Maps. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks, Terry (geofindr)
  24. I am buying a Legend Cx for my daughter and husband for geocaching. I assume that if I buy the Garmin City Navigator North Amarica 7, that it will work with that GPSr? For those of you who have this unit and CN7, do you need a larger SD card than what comes with the unit? Will it autoroute for you and stay on the highways from origin to destination? Does it give audible tones or something like that when it approaches a turn, or just show it on the screen? Thanks for the info. Terry
  25. Thank you for taking the time to answer my original post. I have been rethinking things and may decide tp bite the bullet and buy a Garmin legend Cx. It has the SD card, and with the investment in additional mapping software, they can get auto routing and use it for finding their way in there car. Anyone with the Cx? Your opinions? Thanks, Terry
