I am worried that if I get out on the water tomorrow, with my glands this large, they'll get in the way of my paddling. So... Alistair ---- Mr Peabody and his fabulous WABAC Machine. I could be into that... Call me 604-614-2704. Soonest. I'm going to go pick up the canoe but I'd rather not paddle it by myself. Oh and I have an FSR and might have a spare or 2 if needed. anyone have a list of the caches we need to have in our gps's? Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL Some have graceland, some have mecca. 2. Ack! The buddy I was counting on has a b'day party that his wife is requiring him to be at. So My options are Find a paddiling partner. or rent a single kyack. I'm to old and out of shape to paddle that old canoe all the way by myself. That said If I use the canoe, gear storage is no problem. Whats the cost of a single? where is the best place to rent one? Anyone want to paddle a canoe with me? Got a single for sale cheep? Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL Some have graceland, some have mecca. We have the side of a gravel road in Oregon.... 3. Woo Hoo. I'm now confirmed to have Saterday and Sunday off, as in not working altho I was confirmed for today but had to go in anyway As $$$ will be tight I'll be using a canoe that I own instead of renting. 4. As a non US citizen I have to place my vote for McD's house. It's the only one mentiond that is international And doesn't have other offensive afiliations. ie: most of the green freeks that would prefer to rule our lives and keep sus locked up at home so that nature would be left pristeen for their exclusive use. As for pics. I think all should have at least a gps in it. Or something else that says "This was taken while Geocaching" without looking at the front cover. oh and I don't mean a sign that says this was taken while Geocaching Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL Some have graceland, some have mecca. 6. I recently did a Very religious themed cache, It so happend that it was my wifes religion But I knew that before getting to it. and as it turned out it has been one of my top 5 cache containers. The container is left as a suprise so I wont tell where or what the name is but I do have a pic if I can figure out how to post it. Didn't work go here http://www.hot4x4.ca/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=albuo29&id=aaf here's how it was done. and here http://www.hot4x4.ca/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=albuo29&id=aag Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL Some have graceland, some have mecca. 7. quote:Originally posted by carleenp: quote: Both inconsistent AND incorrect. If you are going to say "African-American" then why not "European-American"? It is a moot point, though, because I doubt any of your BLACK kids have been born in Africa or have dual citizenship. You are correct. That shows how far PC, especially institutional PC could go. Basically, your comment illustrates the point that RK was making and which I agree with. Obviously, I am going to be generally PC in the classroom for professional and politeness reasons, but of course the possibilities of how far the instituional PC could go are endless. PC wise, it already is often silly and could get even more so. Politeness wise, I guess it is hard to say, but at some level the people offended would also get increasingly silly in their level of offense (Like with "European-American). At that point, I think my job would not be in any danger. http://outbreakcorp.hypermart.net/animation/pokemon/pokeanim3.gif Actually the due the fact that many countries other than Africa have "black" people African-American is the wrong term. The correct scientific racial terms <which will probably get me kicked off the board> are: Caucasian, "white" people hehe only after I've been in the tub to long. Negroid, "black" people. <the last I'm not as sure on> Mongoloid. Asian or "yellow" people. osama and the people the mid east are mostly Caucasian, and decidedly not white. Mongoloid includes Eskimos and several others not considered "asian" The terms come from the original Latin names. It's only white north American culture that has given Negroid it's negative connotations and contracted forms. We've all herd them so I wont <and probably can't list them> As Carlin would say there just words, 7 of them .... oh sorry different topic. I have sunday but I still need to confirm sat. oh ya J5, will poached salmon, potato salad with capers, cucumber salad, and blueberry strawberry whipped cream dessert be served again? 10. I'll stick some of my thoughts in here cause one of my methods might be of use to others. First, I never look at the rating. to decide which cache for the day I simply search closest, and go to the first one, if it's a virt or if the co-ords don't at least corispond to the start or parking spot I go the next one. once I have 4 or 5 posibles for the day we all get in the truck <I'm leaving out the ones I specificaly do alone but they have the same selection choices at the start> once we get on-station we check the distance to go and the terain. If it's close and on firm level ground we all get out and go look. If not <3+> My wife <Muscular Dystophy> and youngest <9 mo> stay in the Jeep with an FRS and cell. I then hit the trail with my oldest <11yr> if she thinks she can keep up. That way they get to be part of it but not exHurt themselvs. I also make sure I take LOTS of pics with my digital so that when were back at the truck gulping fluids she can "Go to the cache" on the laptop. I think if I hit 3 hard ones in a row I might think to look at the rating and chose a 1/1 for her but not likly kinda makes me a bad hubby huh? Not perfect but it works for us. BTW if it was going to be hours that I was away fromt he truck we go and I come back alone or once her and the kids went for McD's while I hiked oh and my avg.... 1.7 not as good as I was hoping altho I don't have the ones for a traveling cache that I've done 3 times it's curently a 1 but has been more. highest was a 4 And my wife even came with me, allmost got a divorce tho only 12 of the 35 logs I used were 1's 9 1.5's 9 2's 3 3.5's and one 4 seems even to me. oh and I'm missing 3 logs I have to repost cause it didn't work ;o( how that for caring about my stats. 11. That reminds me of playing hide and go seek at dusk and laying in the shadow of a big tree. I say go for it. it will probably last a long time. you could do it as the first stage in a 2 step multy that way the olny thing you loose is the film can or match box and a slip of paper with the real co-ords on it. It would seem to me that some virts could be better handled this way. The real cache could then be in a much safer but ugly spot. Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL Some have graceland, some have mecca. 12. quote:Originally posted by Dusty668:Sometimes the cacher needs some help too. Earlier last month I was hunting a micro, crawling on my hands & knees in a parking garage when a car came around the corner. Ok, show me how to subtle out of that. I'll give you 5$ cash american. Before you start looking on hands a knees it a compromising spot get about 15 coins preferably silver and spread them around. If someone comes start picking them up. I have also used my keys if I've allready spotted the cache. "whoops! ****", bend scoop stuff. go away read, sign, watch until the person that saw you drop your keys is gone and do it again. My camera and tripod come in handy for "stalling" I kneel by cache and my subject goes ??? works good with a new baby ;o) They will almost always watch the subject and not me. 13. This is what I use in conjunction with my 5d mag. http://www.uwkinetics.com/D_D4.htm Out of water I get way more burn time than they list here. The trigger lock is nice casue you never reach into your bag to find it on with dead batts. The range is not much tho, it puts a lot of light in a 18" circle about 10' away at 50' it's just "lit up" so I use the mag for long distance stuff, but for the most part when caching the huge 18" spot at 10 to 15 feet is all I need cause thats where I'm looking and it won't attract much attention. Also it burns cold unlike the half mil candle stuff. Just want to add that outside that 18" spot it's daylight inside were talking sunspots, Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL Some have graceland, some have mecca. We have the side of a gravel road in Oregon.... 14. Couple of thoughts. I've never woried about a human problem probably due to the fact that I'm a guy and don't normaly take a vagina with me when I'm alone < sorry it's a rip from a Paula Poundstone joke> For night caches one of my BFL's is a 5 cell mag. I figure if a cop thinks it'll work up-side-the-head it's ok for me ;o) I did however have a dangerus incedent recently but it was due only to my own stupidity. I was night caching with only one light. I had no info for the cache just the waypoint in my gps, and a cell phone to a friend sitting at her computer <Thanks Goofy!>. Coverage was spotty as usual. I found the cache 120 meters from my car as the gps flies. while filling out the log my gps was having a hissy and beeping cause of "poor coverage" so I turned it off. I finnished the log and put the cache away. I must have put my brain and common sence in the cache too cause from then on it was dumb thing after another. I had seen a trail that I was sure had been made by other cachers bushwacking in from the street so I followed it. it ended and I pushed a bit more hopping It would pop out on the street. I turned my gps on hoping to find the street 10 feet away. for some unkown reason I never let it aquire. I just paged to the track view and tried to figure out how far I was. I had driven past on the road with it on so I figured all i had to do was find the track from that. pushing another 10 feet I gave up and turned around.!!! or did I crap where did the trail go?????? Long story short. I was lost! if I could maintain a straight line the max distance I could walk before finding a trail that would get me out <I mean those bark mulch things> was 200 meeters the closest was about 75 feet, Road was 200 feet. Yup totaly lost in a rectangular box surounded by trails 300 meters by 120 meters. lol As I stubornly pushed my way to the street I realised that this was the only smart direction for me to go. The cell had died, the gps wouldn't lock, but I could just barly tell which direction cars were going by . I hit roadside 30 ft from my car with 3 scratches on my eyelids a grase on my inner thy from a broken stick that I jumpped down onto, and a sore ankle from a step down from a log that turned out to be a 6 foot drop. Had I managed to hurt myself badly my body would have been found..... eventual cause someone did know what cache I was looking for but the people that would notice that I was missing would not think to ask them for most of a day if not longer. So they wouldn't know to tell anyone to look for me So don't be stupid carry a compass ;o) and lookk at it once a while. And even if I had never looked at it I could have figured out from my gps what direction I needed to go even if it didn't know And don't bushwack ever but espeshialy at night. 19. My brother in law <a bit stupid> has had 2. One was the first gen. It had a phone cord and power suply. If the power was disconected it phoned in instantly, The cops would phone it every 1/2 hour. So to alow him to come out and sit with his kids by the pool. we took the phone off the hook unpluged the phone added an extention, then unpluged it and plugged it into a custom extention cord. I built a battery backup for the power so it could be moved to the limit of the 50 ft cord. He couldn't move his ankle more than 50' from the base. the only time he got caught we were sitting in the back yard in the kidds wadding pool. 30' from the base. The water degraded the sig till it thought he left, it called the cops they show up and find us and all my alterations. He had 2 days left and they said they could make him have 2 more months but after seeing that no matter what we <I> did he would always be corded to the house. All we did was give him and extra 100'. With care he could eat at the neighbours. The second was the gps stile. if the base moved more than ??? distance from the house or his work < prepland route> it would call in via cell. They also checked on it remotly. He could only get 20' from the base and it needed to be in the same room or it would beep a warning. I'm guessing that the house and work are waypoints and it has something similer to an anchor alarm if it strays it freks out and calls in. Not perfect you can run fast and far and beat it but if your that kind of risk you don't get it. Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL 82CJ7 & 79F250 Herd of Turtles 4x4 club

  21. This is a huge one for me. I havn't looked much and may actualy be able to <hope hope hope> I'd like to be able to put 2 points in and have it list all the caches in a set corredor inbetween. Ie; home and edmonds wa where I was for a bbq. give me all the caches 10 miles left or rigth of that line. Then when I'm going on a trip I get a lat, long for my destination and then surch for all the caches that would be on the way. Also when looking for nearest, check boxes for only east of here <or any other direction.> Pat Patterson Garmin 12XL 82CJ7 & 79F250 Herd of Turtles 4x4 club

  24. quote:Originally posted by orange:I have always thought this limit was too close. I think a 0.5 mile is at least better but the 1 mile Bassonpilot proposes is okay too. I will admit I have violated this rule with at least one of my caches but I play by the 0.1 rule until it is changed. Why should geocaching let us carpet bomb a park or trail? Along a 1 mile trail you can technically have 10 caches. Great for up-ing the find count but how about just one at the end of the trail. For me the thrill is that last 10 feet. The rest is just work. I like the idea of a micro park. Sort of like a gps easter egg hunt. The truth is that anythig that gets people out of their chairs is a good thing. Anyone can get to within 100 feet of a cache but can you find it? once there would it not be more fun to be able to find more than one? It's sorta like hunting once you shoot your deer that trips fun is over. Once you find the cache all you have left is the walk to the car. You did remember to mark it as a way point right?
