  1. I think that it is the eating of the swine with which some religions have issues; living airborne pigs are probably ok. Meanwhile, here's another flag: Does the fact that it is an historic German flag make it ok to use? Meanwhile, on topic, if they were to try to limit religious log entries, does that mean I could not write "Han shot first" in a log because of its controversial nature in regards to revisionism of the history of the Jedi? Isn't that a religious symbol you just posted?
  2. I think the OP meant Jesus people that would paint a cryptic message on a tree implying secret knowledge about a missing child. I wouldn't have thought that implied all Jesus people are whacko, but since you seem sensitive about it, perhaps I'm wrong. If they painted words on the tree implying a secret relation between the missing child and geocaching, then I think "whacko geocacher" would be entirely appropriate. You're not wrong dprovan, that's exactly what I meant. Nicely put too. Perhaps it could be rephrased as 'Whackos claiming to be Jesus people'?
  3. You didn't mention what type of batteries you are using. Are they rechargeable? Do you have the correct battery type selected on your GPSr? A-Team's test is simple enough to do to eliminate the unit as the problem.
  4. I have W10 + Firefox on a 10" tablet and the communicator works with that. My desktop is still W8.1 + Firefox and a few weeks ago the communicator went AWOL for a while then came back. Have not been able to figure out why.
  5. Some time ago found some on Google. There are plenty there that can be downloaded and printed (and laminated if you want to go that far). Here's an example you could use to make up your own if you want. https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/228144217/geocaching-muggle-cards-swag?ref=market You could use Google translate for the foreign language but it would be beneficial to have them proff read by some one who speaks the language.
  6. I had an occasion to be "irked" last week. A high numbers German cacher was in the area doing some of our caches as well as with others. As each was found and logged I saw that they we logging just a couple of words, in German. I could recognise some words and had to translate others. It seemed these words were field notes, and a reminder to the cacher so that a later, more complete log, would follow. BTW the words indicated something about the cache that could only have been known if they were there and found it. I thought this was good and looked forward to reading the updated logs. Sure enough, a day or two later full logs appeared but this is where I got irked, they were all the same copy and paste type. I think boilerplate is the term? Not a mention of anything unique about the search and find, nothing. Also, there were a few caches missed (they were part of a series) and obviously DNF'd. Not one DNF logged. That irked me.
  7. It Lives Again! I decided today to do some open heart surgery on the little Etrex or, at least, have a look inside to see what, if anything, I could find that looks suspicious. I have previously taken this one apart to fix replace the toggle rubber so its not new territory to me. Anyhoo, I did find a tiny bit of corrosion on the circuit board connection to the USB socket, like that whitish stuff that sometimes appears on battery terminals. I brushed it off and sprayed a tiny little bit of WD40 into each of the micro switches then blew it all dry with a little compressed air. I then reassembled everything - taking care to get the gasket just right. Powered it up and all is good again. You bewdy, as we say in these parts. I can now put the Etrex 10 back on the shelf. I suspect a little atmospheric moisture may have worked its way inside and decided to have a little fun. Thanks to those who offered suggestions. If anyone, in the future needs to know how to take one of these apart just PM me.
  8. As I mentioned above it will connect and power up from the computer but does not go to mass storage like it usually does. It just displays a "locked" menu screen.
  9. And it continues. http://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/familyfriendly-game-linked-with-bombs-bodies-and-william-tyrrell/news-story/523d8628d3aed445eb5e679158b388b8
  10. It wont "connect" to computer. It will power up from the computer but I get the same result as mentioned above. Haven't been updating or deleting files. I was using it for tracking and using the trip computer. I switched it off when I got home. Next time I powered it up was when the problem occurred. Can moisture cause this? Reason I ask is I was windsurfing (hence tracking and trip computer) and had it double ziplocked but there was a small amount of moisture in the inner bag when I took the Etrex out. Just incase, I've left it in a box of rice for the last couple of days as this sometimes helps with moisture in phones. Another question. Could a dodgy "Back" button (upper rhs) be a cause?
  11. My good ol' reliable Etrex 20 seems to have had a hissy fit and decided not to play. It can be turned on and the menu screen comes on but after that nothing will work. No reaction to pressing any of the buttons or toggle. I can only switch it off by removing a battery. I have tried a factory reset but nothing happens. Have removed SD card, no affect. Replaced SD card, still no affect. Anyone had this happen or know what the problem could be?
  12. It was repeated on the major TV news tonight but they gave themselves an out by saying the connection between the cache and the graffiti was made by the police.
  13. I came across this today. It doesn't have a lot of detail but it is cute and may be of some interest/help, once you get your Garmin Communicator installed that is.
  14. Whacko Jesus people have left graffiti on a tree and given geocachers a bad name in the media. This relates to a disappearance of a little boy which, which is, sadly, a mystery of national note over here. http://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/william-tyrrell-message-left-on-tree-leads-to-police-lockdown/news-story/6d7bcd03f81c8c4aae75f0c44fe0a279 The cache was there well before the little boy went missing and the graffiti is only recent and most likely done by someone who had no idea that there was a cache there, at the base of the tree.
  15. I'm still using the Garmin plug-in on W8.1 (desktop) and W10 (tablet) with Firefox. I use it for individual cache downloads to GPSr when I don't need GSAK.
  16. Yes. I once solved a puzzle cache where the description was in Klingon. There's no requirement that a cache be written in the local language. This generally happens on its own, because most cache owners want the locals to read and find their caches. However, if someone wants to write up their description in Esperanto, Newspeak, or Dothraki, they can do so if they wish. Yep, understand that. It kinda struck me that why go to all that trouble if its not really needed as the coords are a given? I suppose it floats their boat.
  17. As a CO, reading logs where cacher XYZ logs "Found with ABC" and cacher ABC logs "Found with XYZ" and nothing else.
  18. What device are you using? More information required. Caches can be loaded to a car GPS as POIs which will show up on a map.
  19. Came across this one while browsing my GSAK. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC5E1T5_01110011-01100101-01100011-01110010-01100101-01110?guid=834bcc40-d337-40a6-890c-75f1d609a713 I guessing that its binary code but I'm thinking binary is not a foreign language alternative to English. Would a cache be published in Miami, or anywhere else in the country, if the title and description were in, say, Swahili? OK, it's not a mystery as the cache is at the coordinates, but a log suggested it as possible multi, and the first post (not by CO) pictured TOTT
  20. Typical of the logs on this one. Member [Caches Found] 82 Found it Found it 14/09/2015 I took a photo that I hope can be evidence of find as the cache has disappeared.
  21. I don't know if there is a FB page for Geocachers in WA but if there is that would be one way of getting the info out there. Locally, I believe reviewers look for maintenance a plan for caches over 160km (100 miles) from the CO's domain. I could be wrong.
  22. I have a series of 18 caches called the "Bison Trail" which is made up of mostly bison tubes. Very little maintenance is required for these as far as wet logs and O rings go. They have needed very little attention, muggled caches, have been a bigger nuisance. I decided to check on one today which has been exposed to the elements for 2 years and the log is dry and in excellent condition although the cache note was a little ragged at one end. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC4R3QY_bison-trail-11 I give bison tube O rings a very very light smear of lanolin grease which does a great job of preserving the rubber, or whatever it is they're made from.
  23. We're talking about the nice green colored one aren't we? Sorry, I don't know how to do sreen shots or send pics. BTW the new format comes up nicely on my desktop screen too. BTW, I have a Windows phone if that makes a difference.
  24. And another, after more than a year of photologs, finally, a throwdown. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC41PNW_jaisalmer
