  1. :anibad: I am happy to have the new features, but I admit that the delivery mechanism is significantly less convenient. Previously, I had an outlook filter to save the pocket queries to my GSAK folder. Now I have to fire up a browser, log in, find the new query in the list, save it, unzip it, and move it to the folder. I’m not really that disgruntled, but it’s a pain Raine. : ) Doing this several times a week, possibly 35 times a week (if I were to max out my PQs per day) is not super fun. I know that Groundspeak always works to delight their customers/users, so I’m providing feedback in an attempt to be helpful. Keep up the good work!

There should be no need to unzip when using GSAK. GSAK can handle that just fine.

  2. Alright, thanks, I knew that method...wasn't sure if there was some slick method attached to Google that'd do it via their mapping.

I am assuming those two counties have cache locations now...have to look that up.

Unless some have recently gone away, there are traditional caches in all 99 counties of Iowa.

  4. Thanks for the reply, whistler & co. I'm H2OBob's daughter.

I have checked and re-checked my list of finds and it is definitely not listed there... as the original name (CASEMT SITE 2) or any other. I have not been keeping track of my find count other than through my profile. The number isn't a big deal to me... but this particular cache was my first and only FTF, so it was kind of special to me. I had listed it as my first FTF in my profile, and was making a "milestones" bookmark list the other day... that's how I came to find it was gone.

Dad has an email into the cache owner, but hasn't gotten a reply yet. Hopefully he lets us know what's up.

    How about this one?

  6. You might check to see if it created a pocket query. I got a query created, but was not able to edit it after the fact. My other queries work just fine. I only had problems with the "along the route" queries.

  7. Lots of good suggestions on the mapsource. I will call him and try to explain it.

He tried to call me on Father's day. AT 0500 !!!!! I was sleeping in a motel in Rio Rancho NM. My cell phone was off. So I tried to return his call later. It rang and rang and rang. I was about to hang up when he answered. I heard the roar of a diesel motor and the squeek and clatter of tracks. He shouted into the phone "I don't know who you are and I couldn't hear you anyway... I am driving my Bradley in convoy right now - goodbye. I smiled and hung up. I still miss it.

He will not have the opportunity to download anything - and there isn't any easy way to send him a CD. Kinda funny - but it was easier to get things to him in Iraq than it is at Ft. Irwin. Unless they blew up the mail - it happened a few times.

NTC is pretty realistic and intense training. He has had two combat tours, but there are many new soldiers in the unit and they need to get up to speed. And he can always learn something new too.

Next time he gets home I will have to make sure he has some other software too.

Thanks Y-all for all the great suggestions. As a dad and a retired soldier myself - I cannot express to you what it is like to be out in the field and needing something that you don't have. But even the littlest things mean a lot.

    Thanks again.

    Mike.

ExpertGPS and GPSBabel are two programs that will always come in handy. I realize he doesn't have access currently, but they are good to have right there with mapsource.

  8. I first notice the slowdown about 16:00 CDT last evening (Sunday). I marked two queries to run. One ran almost immediately and the other hadn't run by this morning. It still appears to be slow. A cache that normally runs early on Monday morning hasn't run yet at 13:00 CDT.

    Thanks

  9. I was near and in RMNP today what a nice trip. Took some Cachers in Training on their first foray, now Dad has to get a GPS and take the boys caching.

And there are no traditionals in RMNP, though a few have been placed and promptly archived and removed. I have one that is on the East side of the park, and you need a 4 wheel or find me and If I'm off I could take you to X9416. There is a nice damp micro on Rt. 7 near the memorial to Enos Mills, and if you look up that cache on TOPO ZONE, you won't believe what it shows. Something I use a lot these days.

That pretty cool. Hope to get back that way this fall.

  10. Currently, I think I have Poison Oak. Got it along the Chesapeake and Delaware canal last week. Looks like a Gambel Oak or Dwarf Live Oak (bush-like oak trees), but acts like the Poison Ivy vine. Also, makes your clothes look like you were downwind when a fountain pen went through the fan.

Can anyone expound a little more on the fountain pen through a fan annalogy. I have come home a few times with black spots all over my light colored pants. I never knew the cause. I am not particularly sensitive to PI, but I do try to avoid it if possible. I just never knew the source of the black spots. They certainly don't wash out.

  11. I'm impressed, 600 miles and 10 caches - that is quite a day!!

My wife and I generally never plan to drive more than 350 miles in a day to give us time to enjoy the trip and not feel bad about suddenly taking a side stop at unexpected places. While traveling I sometimes plan to stop at 5 or 6 caches in a day but I don't feel bad if I go 350 miles and only bag 4 as long as we take the time to enjoy the scenery and the unique sites that roadtrips in the heartland offer.

That's pretty doable. Last September we motored thru your neighborhood (Casper to Kansas City) and picked up 11 along the way. We normally wouldn't do that, but I had broken a tooth and had a dentist appointment the next morning. We even grabbed 4 of yours along the way.

  12. I was down there a month or so ago. Just one day too late to catch the L&C keelboat return. It is a short distance off Fairfax Trafficway. It was my first time there and I just followed the signs through the industrial district and past the warehouses. There is a boat ramp there and a nice city park and historical site. If you get close the signs should lead you the the area with little trouble. The biggest problem right now is that by the end of the month 2 of the interstate bridges across the river will be closed and traffic could be really bad during rush hour.

  13. Oh...and what happened to all my cool macro buttons on the GSAK toolbar?  It's easy enough to do this thru the file menu, but I LIKED 'em!

Additionally, I am reading a lot about the CM2GPX files.  Do I understand correctly that there is a way to do a hotsync with my PDA, and have my PDA tell GSAK (via the PDB file) which caches I found and when?  Right now all I am doing is waiting for the updated GPX from my PQs, but if I could have it done immediately, that would be pretty cool, too, tho not really necessary, since my "daily update" PQs give me all caches in my state than have had anything changed on them in the last 24 hours.  I have not thus far bothered with the LOG feature on CacheMate, as cool as it is, because my 60CS tracks which caches I have found automatically, and if I find the cache without needing any info from CacheMate, then my PDA stays in my pocket.  HOWEVER, that means I have to go in and tell GSAK which caches I found, one by one.  If cachemate can tell GSAK which ones i found, then that would make it worth updating as I go.  The additional information would be kind of fun to have too.

I have been using this process for the last couple of weeks. It really is a quick two step process.

    1. Hot sync your palm device.

    2. I run a macro that brings in all of the "found" notes from the palm and integrates them with the GSAK database.

Here is the macro that I use.

    RUNPGM pgm="C:Program Files\GSAK\CmConvert\FromPalm.bat" Wait=Yes

    Cachemate settings=PalmFound

    FILTER <Name="FoundByMe">

    SORT By="FoundByMe;UserSort"

The batch file that I call is as follows:

    "C:\Program Files\GSAK\CmConvert\cm2gpx.exe" -f -o "C:\Program Files\GSAK\CmConvert\PalmFound.gpx" -z "C:\Program Files\Handspring\Brian-0\Backup\DefaultItems-cMat.PDB"

This assumes some settings and filters that need to be set up one time only.

    Hope that helps

  14. That is correct. It is set up that day so you can't run 5 PQs, delete them then run 5 more in the same day.

that makes sense. is there a way we can have a longer list? i have a number of them that were either a pain to set up or that i use frequently. i'm totally good with only 5 a day and rarley use them all, but when i run them i'd like to be able to run 5 without deleting ones i want to keep.

that would come in very handy if i wanted to set up a big string of PQs for a roadtrip and run them in batches of 5 in order to cover my route AND i'd get to keep the PQs i run when i'm at home.

I use a program call RoboForm. The free version allows you to save up to 20 (I believe) forms. I just save the forms using RoboForm and then can recall them when I want to change the parameters of the query.

  15. Pssssst . . . Could you tell me how to get GSAK to do that? I just edited, by hand, all the caches from a Pocket Query after putting them in EasyGPS. :(

It would have been great to have a program do that instead. What a time saver . . . ;)

Take a look at this GSAK On-line help which shows the export to GPS screen. Note the "waypoint name" box. Here you can add 'tags' to build the name you desire.

For help on tags here's a link to Special Tags

I'm trying, but the names it created looked like "Traditio." How do I get TR, followed by the rest of the GC.com site name.

I tried this and it didn't work: :(

    %typ%con1%code

You are on the right track. Change the %typ to %typ1 and it should return a one character type.

  16. I've been using the geocaching mode on my new 60C for the last couple weeks and am wondering if the extra memory this mode takes up is worth it.

The icons have to be the a set of two. ie. the closed chest and the open chest so the software knows if you found it or not. Idealy, it would be great to have an icon for multi, traditional, virtual, etc. This way you know immediately what kind of cache it is.

Sure you can include that kind of info in the notes area, but it is annoying to have ot enter into the waypoint info to find out more info about it.

I am thinking Garmin has a bit more work to do to make this a fully functional geocaching tool.

I feel I am better off giving the waypoints the icons I need to tell what they are and not worry about the specific geocaching function.

    Any other thoughts out there?

Not using the feature will not save you any memory. With or without using it, you can only upload 1000 waypoints to the unit. You can however, if you like, change which icons you use for the geocache and geocache found. I personally use small city (which shows on the screen as a small dot) for geocache found. This reduces the screen clutter as I mark caches as found.
