  1. So, how was the caching adventure in Stockton??? I try not to do much up there... hehehe, but just wanted to see what you thought.
  2. I too am looking for Jeepin caches... not much my way (modesto), bunch around pinecrest and some of the other lakes, but they are hiking trails, not jeepin trails. I've been thinking about doing some too, but thoughts haven't made their way to actions yet!!!
  3. Wow, that is amazing... The first 500 I got would not lock sats even if I was out in the middle of a field, the sky was clear, and I inputtied the coordinates manually. I returned it and just got it's replacement yesterday, hoping to have the good luck that you guys are talking about!!!
  4. Yeah, Ghost your a dork for not using cachemate... Everyone lighten up, he's my friend, I just thought I would hijack the thread to harass him!!! I am a GSAK/Cachemate fan... very easy... I never had a GPS or a PDA before this, but with those two programs make it soooo easy to set up and run!!!
  5. OK here is MY experience. I got a Etrex Legend and was happy with it for geocaching. Very simple always found sats (even in the worst overcast and fog!!!). But I was looking for something I could load auto routing software into and topo maps. When I saw the Explorist 500 I thought, nice, this will do what I want it to do and an added bonus, I can get a GPS and not need a Palm Pilot because it says that it shows the description and hints. Well it logs only some of the info on the description, and some of the info for the hint (I still needed a PDA, my bad for not looking into it enough). I liked the unit, how it felt in my hand, how it looked, and what it did. One thing that disappointed me was the fact that there were several major highways and roads in my area not in the base map (The Legend had most of them). Then after a couple caching days, it would not lock sats. I could not get a fix. I tried several "unlocks," but nothing worked. I tried updating the firmware, no help. Fortunately I only had it a week and I sent it back to where I bought it. Hopefully this was a lemon, and when I get it back, it will work as good if not better than the stupid Legend. All in all I wish that it would have worked better, had better maps, some better solutions to the firmware (which if you read these forums, it appears, Magellan is trying to accomodate). But the one thing still in the back of my mind is how well the stupid little Legend has performed!!! I have a buddy with a Vista (Garmin), he has had nothing bad to say about the unit, and I have a friend who has a Sport Trac (Magellan), and she has nothing bad to say about it!!! Garmin or Magellan??? Good luck deciding!!!
  6. yeah, it's not a dealer issue, I think I got a lemon. It was wierd it started tracking fine at first, then got worse... and worse and now it won't even locate itself!!! On the purchase side, Cumpuplus was great. It appears they will be great with the exchange too, but we will see in a couple days!!!
  7. I tried the restart as suggested... 30 minutes later, nothin... it is packed up and headed back to compuplus as per their directions... just in time too.
  8. should I send it back to the place I bought it, or Magellan?
  9. After another day of no fix'ing, I reset everything. I set it in my driveway... I have 2.5 acres and there are no buildings in the area... clear sky... left it there for an hour and it didn't even locate any sats!!! I sent in a survice request with Magellan, so I am just waiting on them to return my request.
  10. I am having the same problem with my explorist 500, I am wondering if it is a physical problem with the antenna or the unit. I put in a service request with Magellan, but still no reply.
  11. I cleared all my tracks and routes today and after that it seamed to get a fix and track... I was thinking that might have been a fluke, though. I didn't get to play long after it fixed sats, but i will be able to play with it more tonight.
  12. Well on startup it seams to be good, tracks 8-12 sats, no problem. I get a fix and the unit will work for an hour or so, but then it loses fix easily, and has a hard time keeping sats. I was with a friend with a sport trac... her's held sats all day!!! Anyone else have an issue like this? Any suggestions?
  13. Actually I figured it out... once I started downloaded pocket querries or groups of caches, I was able to get all on the caches to pop up at once... Magellen's geocachemanager isn't exactly all that user friendly!!!
  14. Why won't my explorist find list my gaches in order... wether I click nearest to position or cities or other, it lists them in the order I downloaded them... I updated the firmware. ARGH!!! I should have kept the Etrex legend!!!!
  15. (one of ghost's friends) I imagine we would be wheelin up by Long Barn or Strawbarry. I have a Stanislaus National Forrest trail map, but how would we look up the trails that have caches? Is there a forum for trail caching?
