  1. Check out the glossary: http://www.geocaching.com//about/glossary.aspx? It is a wealth of information! Good luck out there.
  2. It was added on to my current outdoor activities. I love hiking, but was getting kid of tired of the same old trails over and over. The caches made these 'old' trails new again. I looked at everything differently, I saw things I missed before. Even when I am not out looking for a cache now, I have a new appreciation for that which I took for granted before.
  3. More to the point, this is a stationary antenna, and will only report the position of the antenna no matter how long the cable is. What if you carry such a 'stationary' antenna, but spin around a lot? Then it is moving in two directions, kind of like a planet in orbit, though probably not a very stationary orbit. But then before too long, I would either throw up from mimicking a whirling dervish, or trip over the miles of cabling required, or both.
  4. I was talking up geocaching to some friends the other day. Ths story started when I was describing how I proposed at a cache, and people wanted to know what exactly I was talking about. First of all, I must start out by saying that I am new to this. I have 3 finds so far. I am by no means new to hiking though. And what is geocaching other than hiking with an endpoint? So, the journey is not new to me, but the destination is. Most people, while possibly not interested, were at least intrigued. Two people, also hikers, are looking forward to finding their first cache now. A few others had less supportive comments though. One was "Why would you want to do that /*enter expletive for solid waste, the old number 2 here*/ ? (in relation to caching in general) and the other was "And this is fun why?" (in relation to tracking a travel bug) Now, I have gotten these comments for years. Why would I want to hike in a rainstorm, or showshoe, or ski? Why would I kayak in the dark? Who would want to carry a canoe over their head on a half-mile portage? Why hike 3 hours to see a waterfall when you can drive up to Niagara Falls? Each time I get asked such a question, I bite my tongue and go to my happy place, getting soaked by waves crashing over the gunwales while on the lake watching the sunset, breaking trail in several feet of new snow, narrowly missing stepping on an orange newt in the rain and taking its picture, and sometimes, logging on to see how far my dog tag has moved today. In my head, my answer to their question is another question: "Why is it fun sitting around all day doing nothing but eating oreos and asking why other things are fun?" [nothing against oreos, I like oreos, but the most recent question was asked by a guy eating oreos.] Anyone else out there have "And that is fun, why?" stories?
  5. I am not looking for a unit as complicated as the 60csx, It appears that I am looking for a unit as complicated as the 60csx, or at least the cx!
  6. I am not defensive about things that I own, so get as catty as you would like! If I designed it, I might take comments a little more personally. The etrex was a gift years ago, and served the limited purpose that it had relatively well. Now that I am in the market for a GPS, I am paying more attention than the gift-giver did. I am not looking for a unit as complicated as the 60csx, but would like something that could find me places other than in the middle of lake erie(the most common use of the etrex so far!). The rino, for example pairs a quad helix antenna with the 12 channel receiver(same as the etrex?), and I am curious if a unit like that maintains a better lock, in general. Thanks again.
  7. What is more responsible for a unit's ability to pick up a signal, the receiver(12 channel/High-sensitivity GPS receiver) or the antenna(Built in/Built in quad helix/Quad Helix)? It may be comparing apples to oranges, but I was out this weekend with a friend who has a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx, and I have the eTrex. Through most of the trip, I had no lock whatsoever, and he never lost us. The units are so different, but I am curious which feature has more to do with his ability to track us all day long. I will be looking for a new unit shortly, and would like to know what I should look for. Thanks
  8. yes, yes i have http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=141181
  9. Thank you. I was really trying to give her a good story to go along with our engagement, and it seems that I found a pretty good one. The reaction that I have gotten has been overwhelming.
  10. Yeah, that part does seem to be a winner with the ladies!
  11. I willingly accept that challenge. You have quite a headstart on us, but we will give it the old college try. And that is good advice, all of it.
  12. Nice job! I'd add the date to your waymark entry text, though, just to be clear that it was this year. Congrats again! Done. Thanks for the suggestion.
  13. The proposal's Waypoint has been approved and posted.
  14. Yeah, I thought about that. I told her that she had better not expect a grand gesture like that every time we go out caching!
  15. I submitted the story this morning, and it is pending approval. I am not sure how long that takes, but as soon as it is approved, it should be ready to go! Thanks
  16. Today's Cacher is on hiatus for the summer apparently. Once they get back, I will post it. Thanks for both links, to Today's Cacher, and to my log, I should have done it that way in the first place.
  17. I cannot wait to see that bug start moving around! I hope it moves frequently and far.
  18. She loves it now! She finds it 'interesting'. Which means she puts up with it for me, basically. This was her first time out, so hopefully I initiated her the right way. We will see how things go the next time.
  19. That says it all. Congrats! That line was a late addition to the post. I was telling a friend about it, and she asked "Why a hedgehog?", and then that line just came out.
  20. And her first! When you find the right cache, and the right girl, sometimes you just have to pull the trigger!
  21. [Responding to :Congratulations.] Thank you very much. We had a great day, and I hope to have many more ahead.
  22. I live in West Seneca(an immediate suburb of Buffalo). My family camped a lot at Sprague Brook Park. Somehow in all those years, I never even heard of Erie County Forest. Once I found it, I fell in love. I could not think of a better place to start my life with Mary.
  23. I just wanted to share my story. I proposed on a geocaching outing yesterday, her first, and she accepted. To read all about it, check out the log for GC3D0F - Genesee Road Geocache.
