  1. I found a cache a few days ago that was very large. Contained in the cache were several Travel Bugs that need to be moved along. I will be traveling out of state a couple of times this summer and would like to find caches that are suited to accept Travel Bugs. What is the best way to identify such caches? Would simply filtering on the cache size (i.e. Large) be the best way or is there another identifier that may work better? Thanks for your help.
  2. Hence the -wpts - way points - makes sense. Thanks.
  3. The results of my pocket queries is a .zip file. I download this file to the HDD on my PC. When unpacked, the zip file contains two files with identical names except one has -wpts on the end. The size of the -wpts is much smaller than the other file. Both files are of the GPX file type. In the past, to get these records on my Garmin, I have simply copy and pasted the non '-wpts' file to the GPX directory in my Garmin's directory structure. I have pretty much ignored the -wpts file altogether. It seems to have worked but I have had some odd things occur like missing records. So I now asking what is the best way to get the results of a PQ on to my Garmin? Thanks.
  4. Yep. Sorry. I just caught that. My bad!! Thanks.
  5. Like many others, I'm interested in filling out the D/T matrix. To date I have logged 11 D4/1.5T caches yet the cell for the 4/1.5 is blank. Can anyone help?
  6. My daughter and I were recently traveling across country and grabbed a trackable in Colby, Kansas. She logged it and the records now say, as they should, that I have it. I want to now put it in a trackable hotel cache (cache made especially for trackables, etc) . But how do I log that I have now placed it somewhere? I see logs for this trackable that X-person took the trackable from some place and then the next is where the same person dropped the trackable in a new place. Am I making this too difficult?
  7. Thank you all for the very quick responses. Stay well.
  8. Is there a way to create a file of my finds that includes the distance from my home location to the cache? Thanks.
  9. A fellow cacher and I are trying to learn ways to manage the cache files stored on our Garmins. Today's topic is managing the "Found" caches. Is there a way to review/edit/delete the caches that have been previously marked as 'Found'?
  10. I am trying to solve a Mystery Cache that requires I find a cache whose owner's handle matches each letter of the alphabet. So I need to find 26 caches. To date I have a cache for 25 of the letters but still need to find one whose cache owner's name begins with an 'X'. Is there a way to filter caches by owner name so I can find one with beginning with a X (and one that is near where I live)? Thank you in advance.
  11. I have (mistakenly) created two lists with the same name (Local). I have learned via another discussion topic that some how the Garmin tracks the 'list name' with a GC that is added to the Garmin via the feature in the Geocaching website. I may have this wrong but this is what I understood. I have discovered that if I create a list of GCs and then download them to the Garmin and then, later, change the list by adding more GCs and deleting some of the original GCs that when I download this same list again, the original GCs that I had deleted are also deleted from the Garmin. But as stated above, I have two lists (not sure why) that are both called Local. They have different GCs in them. I am afraid to use one (to add more GCs to) as I'm afraid if I do, it will effectively delete all the GCs from my Garmin that are in the second one. Is this true, can I combine the two lists together such that one of the Local lists has all the GCs from both list? And then I'd delete the other list. I think I ended up with two due to how quickly the Geocaching website does or does not update changes to the lists, both names and number of GCs. I must have created a list named 'Local' and not seen my new list added immediately and thought a mistake was made so I duplicated the effort only to end up with two after the changes were properly reflected (say after I logged out and logged back in).
  12. Ok. I'm back with a related question but I'll post it as a separate topic.
  13. I have a Garmin 64s. Currently, it appears order of the caches listed in the 'found' bucket are sorted on distance from my current location. Is there a way to change the sort criteria? It would be convenient if the 'finds' were sorted by 'date found' or even order found as in "most recent" to "first find". Of course this assumes such data is stored about the 'finds'. Thanks.
  14. Thanks Kunarion! As I suspected it was my error. And you make a great point by refreshing all the GCs in the 'Local' list I will get a current refresh including any current logs, which can be helpful. Thanks again.
  15. I have learned how to create lists and the download them to my 64s using Garmin Express. I've noticed lately that when I download a list of GCs some of the GCs that were the 64s are now gone. It may have been happening all along and I just hadn't noticed. What am I doing wrong? More details: I have a list name I've call 'Local'. I use the list for new GCs in my immediate area that I want to add to the 64s. Before I download a new batch of GCs I first clean out (delete) the GCs in the 'Local' list and then add the new one. I am thinking that deleting the GCs from the download list also signals Express to delete them from the GPS. Because after the download, the new ones are there but I've noticed that some of the ones that had been there are now missing. I didn't check all of them but I have noticed a few missing. I first thought it had something to do with the feature that reorders the GC based on proximity to my current location. I may have toggled a setting such that that feature is not working correctly and the GCs are still there but down in the pile somewhere. Or there could be a bug in the software. It is probably my procedure that I need to change. Any help would be appreciated.
  16. I need to clarify.... After reading the responses I don't really need a route but the projected coordinates. If I have the cords then I can easily get to where I need to go as they will be in the middle of a park area - completely accessible. I can't do the problem with trig formulas but I need the cords of the end location and not a x-y spot on a graph. So again, I am starting at N-xxxx and W-yyyy. From this starting point, the new cords are 1300 ft in a direction ABC radians. In order to get to the new cords I'll need to walk around a small lake and through some trees, etc. normal stuff. I will take a look at Basecamp as I am not familiar with it. Thanks.
  17. I have the coordinates for the start of my route. I have the straight-line distance to the end of my route. I have the direction (in mils) from the start to the finish. The distance is approximately 1/4 of a mile and there is a small body of water between the start and the finish that I'll have to walk around. Using my 64s is there a way to plan a route that will spot my ending coordinates? Or is there another way. Seems like a pretty simple trig problem but I'm new at Geocaching and this is the first time I've run across this problem.
  18. Thanks JohnCNA! This make perfect sense. I was having the same trouble today and was trying to figure out if I was in Live Maps or Dead Maps. Often times I drive the cursor to one side or the other to center my target so it makes perfect sense that the cursor is not in the center of the screen. I am now wondering what the guy from Garmin was even talking about. I'll send them an email and let you know what I get back. Thanks again!
  19. Thanks Geo Climber, I contacted Garmin. What I learned was in order for the zoom to stay centered you must be in Live Maps mode. If you're looking at a different map then it won't stay centered. I'm not sure now what Live Maps is or how to be assured I'm in Live Maps because I was, apparently, not in Live Maps over the past few days. If you can shed some light on Live and 'Dead' maps I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
  20. I recently bought a Garmin 64s which, so far, has been a great step-up over my eTrex Legend - older eyes benefit from the nicer screen - for one. My problem, and I'll admit it may be due to my not being familiar with this new unit, is when I zoom in, what was in the center of the screen moves off to one side and mostly such that I don't know where it is. And the direction it moves appears to be random. If I'm zoomed at 0.5 miles I will eventually want to get to 20 ft. But I find I spend more time trying to relocate my present location and cache location than I do moving toward the cache. Is this to be expected or do I have a set-up issue?
  21. Thanks for the reply. I made a couple of adjustments and now things seem to be working fine. I have the plastic in place behind two batteries. When the unit is on I get a charging status now on the screen I described above. And when I turn it off I get a screen that has Garmin and a battery with a lightening bolt and the standard indication the battery is being charged. I'm using a cellphone-type charging hub that is actually used for some other battery powered device with a USB interface. Things are now good and all is happy!
  22. Ok. I have to jump here. I bought a 64s a couple of days ago. I have been learning about how it is different that the eTrex Legend I used to use. And the issue about battery charging has caught my attention. I have placed a strip of plastic under the batteries and have installed a couple of eneloop Pro NiMH 2450 cells. The battery type option does not appear on the system screen as it did before adding the plastic so I am assuming my plastic strip is depressing the switch at the back of the battery compartment. I've plugged the USB cable into the GPS and into a generic single port USB charging hub. I can navigate to a screen the shows time/date, backlight level, battery charge status and GPS signal strength. But there is no indication that the batteries are charging, yet I know that must be nearly dead as they quit on me earlier today. When I turn the unit off the screen goes and stays blank/black. I can't find anything with a blinking charging segments or lightening bolts or the picture A-Team shows on his display. Should the unit charge the batteries using the hub I'm using? I tried plugging the USB cable into a USB port on my computer and I don't see anything any different. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
