  1. I have no problem using "TFTC" if there's a string of caches along a trail. Take a look at this map and tell me which caches you think I might use a generic "TFTC" on when I hit up this area this summer... https://www.geocachi...,-97.11507&z=14 I suppose the easy thing to do is just use the program I use and have it store a generic log statement that I can just paste in there with one button press... I see a number of people did just that and logged the exact same couple of sentences for the entire string of caches. On another note, it's got to be work to maintain and keep track of hundreds of caches like that.
  2. nothing so bad around here, it's a low population area, the worst actually comes from the cache creators using substandard containers and then abandoning the hobby, leaving their faded, cracking peanut butter jars to fall apart after a few years. I've got a stash of lock N locks, 2 liter preforms, and trinkets for when i get back into geocaching again here in the next couple months. I plan to put instructions under the lids of the lock n locks specifying closing the lid securely and hiding it as found, because not closing the lid has the same effect.
  3. http://tbo.com/news/...ammer-20140429/ He has to pay the $48,000 fine based on the 3 days that the FCC tracked him, although he admits using it for 2 years. haha... if only cops would do the same thing to people who park it in the passing lane on the interstate going the speed limit and refusing to move over... some people who think they have some supposed moral high ground love to take the law into their own hands and it's great to see when it comes back to bite them. Nobody should be using a cell or GPS jammer to interfere with other people's right to use their phone. At worst it could get you major fines or lawsuits if it jammed an important conversation. Most of the people who go to such lengths are mostly jealous of other people's social lives more than anything. Yes it's annoying when someone opens their phone up in a movie theater but there are other ways to go about dealing with it.
  4. I use the popular unsupported free android app that starts with the letter C. I load it up with pocket queries and offline maps as to not burden the server in any way except perhaps to log a find. Also saves data usage. Getting my mother into it next weekend (bought her a moto G and loaded it up with everything needed)
  5. if it's in a muggle heavy location it's probably a tiny container the size of an eraser head and I never even bother to open them up, I just see where they are, mark them as found. I don't open any cache smaller than a film container. If you are just staring down at your phone people won't really pay much attention to what you are doing.
  6. Just thought I would let people here know that Best Buy has the motorola "G" for verizon on sale this week for $49.99. I also got my local wally world to price match, and target price matches as well. Here's the thread on the deal. http://slickdeals.net/f/6966184-motorola-verizon-moto-g-50-bestbuy-6-1-6-7? I tested the signal with the "gps tester" app and it's as good if not better than my Galaxy S4 active, and far better than my Dell Venue 7 or Droid 2, and gets a good enough signal in my apartment (which has a metal roof by the way) to get an accuracy of around 30 feet or so. Go outdoors and the accuracy is around 10 feet. It's a very low priced, high quality unit for multimedia applications, even if you don't activate it with verizon. By the way you can look up on youtube the video on how to bypass the activation so you can just use it like a wi-fi tablet. A steal for $50.
  7. I find it amazing there are that many people that would loot/plunder caches and leave them exposed to the elements. I found a cache purely by accident before I knew what geocaching was and had enough common sense to put everything back as it was when I was finished. I guess humans come in all types.
  8. The hate on generic comments when a cache is found is kind of amusing... it reminds me of a post on the road bike forums where someone got angry that a fellow biker did not wave at them when passing by. Some people just don't wave. I'll comment on all non nano sized caches, but nano ones I'm not going to give my life story because in general I find anything smaller than a film container to be blah and often don't even open them to sign the logs. I'm not a big time cacher by any means though but planning on placing a few more around here in the coming months. My smallest are 2 liter bottle performs.
  9. thanks for the replies. I will revise the description a bit to indicate it's a infrequently used dirt road and appeal. It's also down in a valley so it's unlikely anyone from anywhere is going to see anything unless they are out boating on the lake, then they'll just think someone is fishing from that spot. I'd never put a cache in a super busy area just because I don't like looking for them around lots of muggles myself.
  10. One of my caches didn't get approved because it was under a bridge.. here's what it said " A cache may be disabled or archived if... Cache is problematic due to its proximity to a public structure including and not limited to highway bridges, dams, government buildings, military bases, schools, hospitals, airports and other such locations. Please find a more appropriate place to hide your cache. In general caches should be far enough away from a bridge so that a cacher searching for the cache will not mistakenly start to search the structure or any of it's supports." However there are caches along bridges all over the place out here. Heck, there is one located right next to a dam. Is this a new rule and the old caches just got grandfathered in? Can they not be hidden around any bridge?
  11. I think people are over paranoid in this culture about child predators. I can understand not wanting one's child abducted but I think the risk is way overstated by the media. Plus if a predator wants a particular child bad enough, it will happen. Keeping adult males off playgrounds isn't going to prevent anything. Maybe I just live in a safe/sheltered area though. With that said I don't like caches in any densely populated residential areas, playground or otherwise, and would not go for any cache when there's lot of muggles around, children or otherwise.
  12. Adding QR codes would be neat, got a laser printer and laminator at the ready. As for google maps, greasemonkey can take care of that problem just fine. I can understand google's position allowing for profit sites to basically make money off of using google maps without paying.
  13. I have a bunch of 2 liter preforms and I cut pens down to size to fit in them. Haven't seen that around here so it's something different. Also the small lock and locks where an actual spiral-bound notebook can cut down to fit inside, got some of them. I do wish they'd distinguish between the 2ml sized 'nanos' and film canisters and 2 liter preforms which are more appealing to me. Though the nanos have their place, there's a couple people in this area that are overdoing it with them, so I have no interest in them. I'm not really a numbers guy, just want to take friends and family out to get some quality caches every now and then. Hopefully I can place some larger ones, with my smallest ones being 2 liter preforms, and give other people the same satisfaction. Maybe some unique ones, will have to troll online to see what's all available.
  14. they should add a 'mini' option to make a distinction between 2 liter bottle preforms and film containers which I'd consider minis, and bison tubes, 2ml plastic tubes, etc. I cut down some pens to fit into my 2 liter bottle preforms. There are lots of true micros out here. I'd be a bit more willing to drive out of the way for minis, but generally ignore all 'micros' now and will not bother with them unless they are directly along my route from one larger cache to another. I'll probably just end up doing a pocket query and filtering them out completely. Would be nice to have the option of including the bit larger sized caches in the query.
  15. I got my mother, sister, and nephew into caching yesterday and although they had a blast, are not interested in micros. I think some are alright but every time I check the map I see new micros pop up in areas I was thinking about placing regulars. Dozens in just the past month alone. To make a point I've decided to not go and find any micros anymore unless they are directly on the way to a regular I was going to get anyways. At the rate it's going I'm afraid that every unique spot in the eastern part of my state will be filled with micros in due time. It's just not beneficial to the hobby imo, and to be really honest, I have no interest in getting off my road bike every 528 feet on one of my rides just to pad my find count. Don't care about find counts... seems more like work to me. It's the sheer quantity being placed around here, not so much that they exist. I'm afraid it may end up pushing more people away from the hobby than it attracts. As for Folgers cans and peanut butter jars that one's I've found have been in remarkably good shape.. it only takes a cache owner to go and replace the container every 3 years or so and it seems to be fine. But I probably won't ever use em just because of their reputation.
  16. I agree. I don't like to tell other people how to live their lives, but I feel that too many micros in a given geographic area is a turnoff for new cachers.
  17. compared to where I live just about anywhere in that part of the country would be interesting.
  18. People that take the or better part of "rehide the cache as you found it or better" as a personal challenge to make the cache unfindable. Typically by moving it to a new hiding spot, usually more than 30 feet, away from the original spot. I don't bother searching forever, if it's not within 20 feet of where the GPS says.. irresponsible to move it anywhere than where one found it in my opinion (within reason) Other then that wet logs and micros in state parks are my only peeves. (State parks and woods are at a premium out here) Anywhoo I plan to be more a cache placer and not so much a cache finder this year. My micros will be 2 liter bottle preforms assuming they keep the moisture out, with a pen cut down to fit, otherwise small to regular containers. I've got 5 preforms, 3 smalls, and 2 regulars sitting in a drawer ready to place right now.
  19. I would like to add anything in a remote, unpopulated location to your state parks comment. Anything out in the sticks/woods.... It is pretty disappointing to go for a bit of a hike to some beautiful location, and only find nothing but a bison tube with a piece of paper jammed inside it. For the most part I agree but there are some well done power trails done on unassuming gravel roads in remote areas that I don't mind. North of watertown, south dakota... just dirt roads, no major landmarks or anything that would warrant full size caches... And again in the southern part of the state, SE of Freeman, someone spelled out the word 'geocaching'.. I wouldn't expect power trails in these remote areas to all be full size caches. People drive to these expecting micros I'd imagine.
  20. admittedly not a big micro guy because one or two people in this area have gone micro-wild but if all caches were large then large ones would get boring fast. Nice to have the option of doing a power trail, I just wish micros would be kept out of the state parks, of which there are not many to choose from around here. Leave room for cachers to hide regulars there. I bet if I asked nice the person would archive their micro and let a regular be put there though. Best to just use pocket queries for what you want to accomplish that day. For what it's worth, all of the guy's micros have all had dry logs and been in good shape. The ones with damp logs I've found were placed by people with few hides/finds in comparison.
  21. I have a premium account but am still listed as a 'member' .. what's a 'premium member' ? Or is it a system glitch?
  22. you could start by changing 'any container' to 'selected containers' and only check 'small', 'regular', and 'large' .. and perhaps 'other' ... if you are just looking for more interesting caches. Most micros are the same. However looking for interesting locations will take more work. Maybe check some of the attributes like the poison ivy leaves to add a little fun to the search.
  23. it's hard to get the logs out of those plastic 2ML containers so I'd thought about bringing a tweezers along or simply not signing the log if I can't get it out. Other then that, spare items to repair regular sized caches such as extra pens, spare full sized log books, swag. And of course the droid for finding the caches, and whatever clothing is appropriate for the temperatures. If on the road bike, just the phone, and a pen. Haven't' done that yet though. There's a 'power trail' I'll nail with the road bike up north this spring.
