  1. Do you have a problem with satellites? Only you can answer that question for yourself. However, taking the following quiz may help to put your relationship to satellites in perspective for you. If you end up answering "yes" to three or more questions, you may want to take a good look how your life is affected by satellites.

    1. Have you missed classes or work because of satellites?

If I was still in college I would definately have skipped class for this. Havn't missed work though

    2. Do you have trouble refusing satellites?

YES, they call to me in my sleep!

    3. Do you need satellites in order to have fun at a party?

If it's a geocaching event party I do!

    4. Do you use satellites to build up your self-confidence?

Found a 5/5 or that pesky DNF? You bet!

    5. Do you use satellites to help you relax?

    All the time.

    6. Have you tried to give up satellites and failed?

Once for three months, but that was because I didn't have a GPS.

    7. Do you crave satellites as soon as you wake up?

No because I never went to sleep, too busy with the satelites

    8. Do you get into trouble because of satellites?

Only when I'm late to dinner because I was off on top of a mountain somewhere!

    9. Do you crave satellites at a definite time daily?

    All day long!

    10. Do you lie to others about how often you partake in satellites?

    Only to my wife!

    11. Have you gotten into financial difficulties because of satellites?

Um, well I am on my FIFTH GPS in one year.

    12. Do you often wish people would just mind their own business about you and satellites?

    All those pesky muggles!

Remember, there are people who can help you control satellites, instead of satellites controlling you.

Don't think I'm gpoing to find those people round here!

  2. As someone else already noted please make sure you are downloading .gpx files and not .loc . Also, you should keep ijn mind that even with usin GSAK the 210 limits the space allowed for a 'hint' to 20 characters. If the hint is longer than 20 it will be truncated. For this reason I often find myself using the WAP site.

  3. I see the 7-digit thing is working how about fixing the usage of degree minutes?

For all those that keep asking for a different form of coordinates other than decimal format it already can be done. Simply input a space where the degree symbol should be. i.e. 78 64.523 -34 12.619

  4. 2. You can also play the Wal Mart Game. Try to find a family of 4 with one of the following two things:

2a) enough teeth among them to equal one full set

    2b) a cumulative IQ over 80

    I freaking hate that store...........

    [Edit]

Sheesh..... you can't use a letter b and a parend without getting a smiley face like this ;)

    I'm actually offended by this.

My wife and I are both college graduates with a kid and we shop there to save money. We certainly have all our teeth and we no doubt exceed the IQ test handily.

You don't have to be stupid to shop at Wal-Mart.

Perhaps you might try to think a bit before posting, pal...you might not come off as such an ignorant person.

Thank you! I get so tired of the whole 'Evil Wal-Mart' bit. If someone wants to blow a whole lot of extra money just to say they don't support 'evil' Wal-Mart, be my guest. But my question is this if so many people are of the oppinion that Wal-Mart is evil (and just think of how often you here that oppinion), then why are they so successful? They are building a new Wal-Mart in our town and of course a large group is bent on stopping them at any cost. I think that Wal-Mart should pay careful attention to who these people are and the first time they try to shop in the new store tell them they aren't welcome. Of course that would never happen.

  5. I'd like to try my hand at paperless caching. I already have a Palm IIIxe and even the GPS accessory for it. Problem is I have a serial cable and my laptop does not have a serial port. Does someone have an extra cradle that is USB they could part with? I can't offer much for it as the Palm itself isn't worth that much. But if someone has just a cradle and no Palm perhaps we could talk. Thanks!

  6. no one has mentioned TB's dropped before the cache is approved. Knowing the location of the TB's, some hardcore FTF'er types can "guess" the location of the cache, in many cases. It's been discussed in the past, although I'm not prepared to Markwell it (unless someone demands proof).

That happened to me quite by accident. I was watching a green jeep tb before it was ever placed in a cache. Saw when it was dropped into a cache that wasn't even published yet. From the name if the cache I THOUGHT I knew where it was. I still waited for it to be published however and boy was I wrong! I would have been seraching a very long time if I had tried to look for it.

I seem to remember something about unpublished caches showing up on WAP but I think that loophole may have been closed. It didn't give the coords from what I understand but some resourceful cachers could still use it to figure out where the cache was.

  7. If you used direct withdrawl from you checking account it can take a couple of days for it to clear. If you want instant money transfer you need to use a credit/debit card.

Correct. Paypal changed this to my primary method of payment, although I have no idea why, and getting in contact with someone to change it is like pulling teeth over there. But it works just fine for Premium payment (I pay by the month, for no particuliar reason). It just takes a couple of days.

You can change it yourself online. Once logging into you account go to 'profile' and then to 'credit cards' make sure your card information is current and then clock on 'make primary'.

  8. I absolutely NEVER used the maps on my 210. In fact the maps were the one thing did not like. Too slow and the darn thing always hung when I got to that screen. But the Garmin only has 1MB of internal memory and the explorist had 22 MB. I have always wanted to try something with a Helix attenna though.

Serial and USB per Garmins website with USB cable.

    http://www.garmin.com/products/gps60/

    But no maps.

The 210 was better. Call the regiaonl manager, get yours back. Then send it in to Magellan and get if fixed. You would be happier. Better still maybe the regional manager can get you a replacment.

  9. In my neck of the woods Circuit City is hurting . . . BAD, they have published that they are considering

firing all of their highest payed non-managerial (and probably some of them too) staff and offer (probably a

select few) their jobs back after 10 WEEKS, at a REDUCED WAGE ! It would seem that the 'Wallmart mentality'

is spreading, a further "white trashing" of American jobs. Heads up folks someone's got a firm grip on the

edge of YOUR carpet and they're gonna yank it. Comp USA is pulling out too . . . 40% off just about every

thing non-MAC. The only Comp USA store left in WA will be in Yakima . . . of all places. Sheesh!

    Norm

Considering? Try they have already done so. And this isn't local news, this is national news. They layed-off four people at our store who had each worked around 20 years for CC. They were making around $18 an hour each. Actually the two other ticked off customers who were in line with me and I had a discussion about this. We said that this was what the result was. The good help is now gone and the little kids making minimum wage are left to run the store. I am already boycotting Best Buy, now where am I going to buy my electronics? (We do not have a Fry's)

    edit: spelling

  10. If you read my other topics right now you will know what is going on. This is not meant to be a magellan vs garmin thread. Basically I had a Explorist 210 that I LOVED and I am looking to replace it. The 210 is not available to me at this time (I am limited to where I can purchace it). How does the Garmin GPS 60 compare? Mostly I need to confirm that the GPS 60 connects with a USB cable and not a serial cable. Does it come with a cable or do I need to purchace one seperate? Thanks!

  11. I probably shouldn't have taken the card. But after being on the store most of the day I was just ready to get out of there. I thought maybe I could end up trading it or selling it or something. Anyeay I cazme back to add that I just checked the Magellan website and they are still selling the 210. So I guess it has not been discontinued as I was told.

  12. Okay, circumstances have led me into the possession of a Circuit City gift card that has a value of $150.14. If you want to know the whole long story (rant) about how I came about this card you can read it here:

    http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...p;#entry2792896

Simply put I do not need or want this card. I am willing to exchange it for a good condition used GPS. Make an offer with what you have. I would prefer an Explorist 210, 400, 500, 600 (not happening, I know). But I am open to any GPS that will connect via USB cable for data transfer. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thank you.

Edit to add that I will be glad to let you call in and check the balance on the card before we seal the deal.

  13. Maybe that is a tad dramatic but that is how I feel right now. This has been going on for about a month now. At the beginning of March I ordered a Magellan Explorist 210 from the online store. I had it for about two weeks when it developed a dark spot on the screen. I called and was told that they couldn't take it back because it was outside the return policy. The return policy on a GPS was 14 days it had been 15. So I complained that I was going to have to return the GPS to the manufacturer because it was ONE day too late. They then said that maybe I could return it to a store and exchange it. The problem there was that the local store did not have any. So the online store customer service person said they would call the store and see what they could work out. Fine. They then come back on the line and say that the store manager was going to call me back that evening about getting a new explorist shipped to the store. They never called. I waited a week and called back. This time the customer service rep connected me directly to the store. This manager acted like he had no idea what I was talking about and why customer service would say that a manager would call me because they had no way of communicating with the stores. That was lie number ONE. After all I had just been transferred by customer service to the store. So I explain what was going on and his first response is "So why are we (sarcastic we meaning me not them) waiting so long to return this gps." I politely repeat that I had called a week ago and not been called back. He agrees to exchange the GPS for a new one, but it will have to be shipped. That’s fine, that is exactly what I wanted anyway a new 210 not a refund. He then proceeds into a long speech about how I BETTER have EVERYTHING that came with the GPS or he would have to charge me. This is lie number TWO as the website says that if a product is EXCHANGED and has missing pieces only the pieces that were returned will be exchanged. This was not a problem as I had everything I just wanted to point out another lie told to me. I also asked when the new GPS would arrive. He said he would no know until I came into the store. So I return the GPS to the store and the sales associate behind the counter accepts my return and orders me a new one. I asked her when it would arrive and she said she did not know because her system would not show her. She said I should check back on Saturday. I also questioned if they had any at all because they were no longer listed in the online store. She said it 'should be' fine because they weren't on backorder. So I call this morning and ask when the truck was to arrive. The associate asked me for my order number and she told me that the order had not arrived. Then she said the truck wasn't due in until noon (which is what I asked her). So I say "so you don't know if it will be there today?" and she says, with attitude, "well it's not noon yet!" I ask her how long it takes to check in the truck. "90 minutes" she says. Fine. I go to the store (I was in the area anyway) at 1:30. The associate again tries to check my order and says it is not there but that 'the truck is just now being checked in' Okay, so I left and came back two and one-half hours later. The truck was STILL being checked in. "How long?" I ask. "Fifteen minutes" I am told. So I go look around the store for another fifteen minutes. I go back to the counter and the associate still cannot find my order. She goes to get a manager and he looks at the screen and says "Oh, those have been discontinued, we aren't going to get one." "So they took my GPS, promised me a new one, and now you are telling me you aren't getting any?" I asked. "Well the status of the item must have changed after we ordered it." he replies. Remember that the associate could not tell me when it was coming in, and I questioned her about it not being available online before. I am fairly certain this is line number THREE as they most likely never had any at all. So I ask what they are going to do. They say that I can exchange it for another GPS. However they don't have any in the store. The only comparable one online is a Garmin Legend which I did not want because it has a serial connection not a USB and my computer does not have a serial port. Second they offer to refund to my original form of payment. PROBLEM was that part of my original form of payment was circuit city rewards cards and they expired soon after I used them. Plus if they refunded to my original form of payment I still would be stuck with Circuit City credit that I could not use because they DID NOT HAVE the gps they promised me or anything comparable for that matter. I then asked if they still had my GPS, the one I had returned. A 210 with a spot on the screen was better than no 210 at all. So the manager goes to the back and checks and my original GPS had just left the store an HOUR ago. That's right if someone had figured out earlier that day that they were not getting in the product my GPS would still have been there. So I tell the manager that since they took my GPS and cannot provide me with a comparable one, they should give me a cash refund so that I can go elsewhere and buy one. He refused to do this. So eventually I took a gift card (and the number of the district manager) and left the store. So now I have a $150 CC gift card and nothing to do with it. I do not have the money to just go buy another one. Besides I HAD one I PAID for one. I would never have returned it in the first place if they had told me they did not have one to give me. So that is my story, thanks for listening.

  14. ... is exactly what I want to do. An off site sound file that is needed to complete a puzzle cache.

I am not a Reviewer or affiliated with Groundspeak but

you might want to review the guidelines carefully on placing a geocache first, especially this excerpt:

    http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

    ...

Guidelines that Apply to all Cache Types

    ...

In the interest of file security, caches that require the downloading, installing or running of data and/or executables may not be published. ...

But I say good luck and hope it gets published as you intend it to.

I checked with a reviewer about that very line before placing my cache. Though some may see it differently I was told it was okay. In my opinion a sound file is not the same as an 'executible'. It runs through a browser plug-in and is not much different than an image. Those (images) too must 'download' to your computer. Sercurity risks come from .exe files and the like where trojans and viruses may be included. Not much danger from a WAV or MIDI.

  15. Okay, first of all you need somewhere to host your photos. You can host some types right here at geocaching.com but not others (such as animated gifs). The easiest way to add a background image is this:

    1) Fill out all the other details of your cache page. They don't even need to be the final details as long as you uncheck the 'This Cache is Currently Active' box.

    2) Once you have submitted your cache click on 'View Listing'

    3) Find the link that says 'Upload Images'. Click on it.

    4) Find the image you want to upload. Click on it. Click on 'Open'

    5) A window will appear with your photo you have just uploaded. Right click on the photo.

    6) Choose 'Properties'

    7) Find the URL for the image (begins with http://). Highlight the URL.

    8) Right click on the highlighted URL. Click on 'Copy'

    9) Return to your cache page. Click on 'Edit Listing'

    10) In the background image box right click and choose paste.

    11) Submit your listing again.

    12) Your image should now be displayed in the background of your cache page

As for HTML that is a pretty tall order. Here is a link to some basic html tags:

    http://www.web-source.net/html_codes_chart.htm

Basicaly to insert an image use this tag:

    <img src="paste your image url here">

    Hope this helps.

  16. Just finished a cache that requires sound files as part of the clue. No it does not play automaticaly. Yes HTML tidy no longer allows sounds to be directly imbedded into the cache page <bgsound source="">

You must find external server space to host your sound files (and it must be a commercial free site per Groundspeak guidelines).

If you have somewhere to host your files you can try two different things.

To click on a link and simply have the sound play try linking to the sound file directly

    (i.e. a href="http://www.anypage.com/mysound.wav")

With this option a new page will load with the default plug-in player control bar playing the sound file.

    or

To load a page with a graphic or background of your choice and the sound playing in the background, try this:

    Create your html page.

Use this tag in your html page <bgsound source=http://www.anysuchsomehost.com/yoursoundfile.wav>

Link from the cache page to your html page.

Note: on both options a link will take your viewers away from your cache page to somewhere else (again this must be noncomercial, perhaps your ISP provides you some space?) If you don't want them to leave your cache page (because they might never come back to it) have the link launch a new browser window. To do this you must insert --- target="_blank"--- into your tag (take away the --- before and after)

    Like this : <a href="http://www.yahoo.com" target="_blank">

Look at my latest cache and see if this is what you are trying to do:

Can You Hear Me Now (GC11G55)

  17. I purchaced a Magellan Explorist 210 for the Circuit City website on February 27. It was not the best price option I know, but I had some gift certificates. Last weekend the GPS developed a dark spot on the screen. So I called CC tonight and the customer-no-service represenative first tried to tell me to return it to the store, but no stores near me have any in stock. After asking me several times if I was sure the store did not have any he told me that gps units only have a 14 day return window. I received the unit on March 1st it is now March 16th. That's one day! Anyway he told me that I would have to call Magellan. I have heard other people had a hard time with Magellan's customer service as well. So my question is, in the experience of someone who has dealt with Magellan, what kind of turn around time should I expect if I send it to the company? I am going on vacation in a few weeks and I do not want to be without my GPS!
