  1. I guess I should add that this is in the Milwaukee, WI area! Thanks!
  2. Hello from a geocacher in VA! An after school group that I work with has a coin that we are watching. It's goal is to travel around the world before the end of the school year. Just today some very kind cachers placed this coin in a cache near the airport. If anyone here is traveling overseas (eastern bound i.e. Europe) in the next little bit could you please retrieve our coin and help it move along the way! The cache is: My Graduation Class: Alex V. (GC1CH32) and the coin is FBMP Globetrotter. The owner is MP@Fishburn which is our group account. Thank you very much!
  3. Has someone intentionally (or not) changed the dns entries on the website? Specifically geocaching.com no longer points to www.geocaching.com. Rather it results in a 'bad request' error in firefox 2.0 and a 'This page cannot be found' error in IE 6. Just wondering if this was intentional or not.
  4. without seeing it I am betting a wingless wasp. Don't touch that sucker! They do squeak when you push on them though. My little brother liked that bit until he got stung! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! This is what I saw. Thanks!
  5. Out hiking in the Roanoke, VA area today a particular insect caught my eye. Tried to get a picture but I wasn't fast enough. Anyway it looked like a very large ant, it was bright red and black and looked kind of fuzzy. It remonded me of a spider but it definately had an ant shaped body (six legs, head, thorax, abdomen). Any ideas?
  6. At the local Goodwill I found a bunch of copies of National Geographic National Parks Topo. software. They were selling it for $10 a copy. Is this software any good? Is $10 a good deal? Most importantly what does it include? Does it include the AT? Thanks!
  7. Like many others here have said I too am mostly immune. Grew up playing in the woods, never had it untill I was about 27. That summer I worked on a farm and weed whacked right through a patch of the stuff. I then had a horrible case of it. Seems after that I am sensitive but not that sensitive. Got one other bad case once when geocaching. Funny thing is while I am not sensitive to PI most pine trees will make me itch like mad within a matter of minutes. This is unfortunate since, while there might not be many caches intensionaly hid in PI, there are more than a few in pine trees. I KNOW my arms are going to be red and itchy if I look for the cache, somehow I just can't help myself!
  8. This could be a system error on your end. I know that after opening 20 pages or so I get a page file error and the pages all start coming up blank. Check your page file usage by typing ctrl+alt+del and then clicking on the performance tab.
  9. The lost and found thread I just posted to reminded me of a question I have often considered. Does the price/ value of an item effect how far you would go to retrieve it if it was lost or left behind? For example I imagine that very few of us would even walk a mile back for something such as a pen (unless it was a really nice pen!). However, what happens when the value starts to increase? This happened to me about a year ago: I had just finished a multi. It wasn't an extraordinary long or grueling multi, 2 miles at most. I had a nice insulated water jug with me and a soccer ball I had found on the way to the cache. I laid them down looking for the final stage. It was only after I had hiked out that I noticed they were missing. Now I only would have had to go a mile at most to retrieve them. On a normal day it may not have been a problem and I would have returned. However this particular day was blazing hot, the path back down was very steep and I was already late for dinner with the wife's family. The last part of that more than anything made me decide to forget the water bottle and count it as a loss. The soccer ball had been a find anyway and now it could be someone else's. How about it? How far would you walk back for a $8 water bottle? A $50 cell phone? A $200 GPS? How far HAVE you walked back for something? What have you decided to leave behind?
  10. Lost: Explorist 210 (deep in woods, lots of leaves and a creek, never seen again) Lots of pens Two one gallon water containers with in a moth of each other (I actually heard the car that drove off with one, who would want some one else's water bottle?! Yuck!) Found: Assorted knives Lots of pens (but not the ones I lost!) Assorted sports balls (golf, tennis, basketball, soccer) Nascar Watch Sunglasses I have thought I lost my cellphone a number of times. I actually get excited as it would be an excuse to buy a new one. I just can't justify it otherwise.
  11. I have Mapsend Topo 3D USA. When you are looking at a track in 3-D 'Overview' mode it shows a little red car that follows along your track. Is there any way to make the car something else (i.e. a hiker)?
  12. I don't see why that would be a problem or 'not allowed'. You can make just about anything a TB and I have seen cars with the TB number written on them or the license plate instead of a real tag. The only trouble is it wouldn't show up as a coin not even with the generic 'personal geocoin' icon. It would show up just as a travel bug. But if that doesn't bother you, go right ahead!
  13. If you go on the GW5 site and check the message boards it appears the order was actually sent off (for production) earlier this week. So despite the delay we will hopefully get our coins soon. I too am waiting and put my name in the 'notebook' Though I have no idea how long it takes to produce a coin.
  14. Hey, Bluefield, cool! I went to college there, plan to come up that way this summer to visit some friends and do some caching! I know it's not that close but check out our group located in Roanoke: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/roanokevageocaching/
  15. How is the battery life of the battery pack compared to the aa battery clip? I love my 500 but I got to say that the battery life sucks (compared to the 210 I used to have). I am using the clip with niMH rechargeables.
  16. That's all I can figure out. That I mistyped the TB number. Unless it was a problem with the WAP site. It seems that it truncated one of my logs to say just 'gw5' instead of 'going to gw5' . I was keeping it short as it is a pain to type anything over the WAP site. Also the other one that I did sucesfully retrieve just says retrieved from and leaves the cache name blank. Oh well, I won't try that one again! Thanks! I had previously contacted the owners as well so hopefully someone will get the message.
  17. When used properly I find Maggellan Geocache Mnager a very usefull tool. YES it is a pain when you are doing a list of individual caches to keep clicking the 'append' button, but I still use this program over others. wp things (besides clicking the 'append' button): 1) When it asks you if you want to save changes to the file say NO! Saying yes will make it revert. 2) The easiest way to upload a whole list is to make a PQ, download it to a folder and the drag the gpx file into the window of geocache manager. Voila! The whole list will be there. Hope this helps!
  18. If you are just starting out I can't say enough about the Magellan Explorist 210. It is the best unit for the money. Sure it does not have expandable memory but it has the largest internal memory of any unit in that price range. If maps are not overly important to you then it is the unit to go for. You can store a TON of waypoints on that thing! I had a Venture Cx and did not care for it. But that could just be me. Do not buy an Explorist 300 if you want to download waypoints. The 300, 200 and 100 have no computer connectivity without a hack. THAT is the most important feature IMO, much more important than maps. I would never have made it to GW5 last week if I had to enter all those waypoints manually! I would still be entering them! Again, I say go with the 210. For the money it can't be beat.
  19. Ok so I managed to make a mess of things here. Attended GW5 last weekend. It was awesome! However, on the way I retrieved two TB's (actually a TB and a coin) from a TB hotel to take to GW5. Here is where the trouble began. Arriving at GW5 late at night I found myself without WiFi access. So I decided to use the WAP site on my cellphone to retrieve them from the cache. Turned the TB and coin (along with some others) over to the guys at the trackable station. Then after arriving home I realized I had never dropped those last two TB's so I dropped them into GW5. It was only after I dropped them that I realized that one of those TB's was not the TB I actually left at GW5. I do not know if something went wrong with the WAP site or I was just tired and didn't notice but somehow I managed to 'grab' a TB from a cache in Arizona instead of the cache I actually visited in NC. So here is the break down: This 'TB' shows up as being in GW5 but is not and never was there: http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...bd-aa40d60cd26d It should still be here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b9-cadd48a910d1 This is the TB I meant to grab and drop: http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...2c-085273cd007b It shows up as being in the Mini-Zooki's TB Resort and should be in GW5 Now since I no longer have the TB to read the number off of it, and I don't even know the number for the Pulpito Perez TB, I can't straighten this out. I have emailed the owners but the TB's have remained as is. Neither of the owners have logged on since I emailed them. I guess that if someone retrieves the actual TB's they will just grab them and the situation will be straightened out. I guess what I am asking is, can this be straightened out any other way? Are reviewers able to move TB's?
  20. Looks likre a problem with the Jeeep site. Not owned by Groundspeak as far as I know. Did you try contacting the webmaster for jeeep.com as the error page suggested?
  21. Go to the image menu, choose "stretch/skew" type in a number smaller than 100 to make a smaller image that will fit the page. You mean that it won't PRINT on one page? Are you using a laptop or computer with a widescreen monitor? Try this: 1) Follow the same steps above EXCEPT: 2) Instead of Paint open up Word, Works, or another word processing program. 3) Under the file, page setup menu switch to landscape view. 4) Click paste or control+v. You now have an image that you can click and stretch to the desired size AND see what it will look like on the printed page. Also if you want just the map and not all the other stuff (Browser window, toolbars, etc): 1) Paste into paint as described in previous post 2) Use your cutting tool to draw a box around just the map 3)Click on 'Copy' 4) Open up Word Processing and follow steps above. Hope this helps!
  22. My very first thought! How many true HP fans are there around here? Though I am trying to think if there was ever a term used in the books for 'Muggles' who were aware of the Magical world (Harry's Aunt and Uncle or the Brittish Prime Minister for example) I don't think so. Ummm.. 'Mudblood' is a very offensive term in the book. Squib is better but still doesn't fit the true definition.
  23. Thanks guys! Turns out I didn't need to ask. The coin came today, wow that was fast! Can't say what coin it is because it is directly related to the theme of the cache and I know a couple local cachers who keep a close eye on this forum. I am impressed by Geoswag/ Oakcoins!
  24. How long does it usually take to recieve a coin from geoswag? I don't have any complaints, I'm just curious. I ordered a coin at the beginig of the week and I want to put it in a cache at the end of next week. Do you think I will recieve my coin on time? Do they send an email letting you know when they ship the coin?
  25. Recomeneded these to someone before. Still haven't tried them myself. They work under water and claim to last for 10 years w/o needing a battery: http://www.glowrings.com/
