  1. Just moved back to AZ from SoCal or I'd join you too. Although I know there is at least one geocache over in Truckhaven that was put there during the hude annual TDS Desert Safari (1200+ 4x4 vehicles attend). Anyway, check out the "Southwest" forum here. There were a few SoCal people looking for 4x4 geocaching buddies over there.

BTW, you can find info on the TDS Desert Safari here: http://www.tds4x4.com

It's the first weekend in March every year. We'll be there.

I probably didn't make it clear but my son was behind me so in the short time I had to respond I decided to put the backpack in between *us* and the dog. The dog came to me first then quickly went around me and started licking everyone. Thinking back I'm not sure what else I could have done that different that would have helped other than bring something that could be used as a weapon. I think picking up my son would have only left me without hands to try and fight the dog with. Luckily it didn't come to that.

  4. Aw man, I would love to but next weekend we're moving from the Riverside area back to Arizona (Phoenix area). Guess we'll have to look for some fellow Jeepers out there. Good luck! I can sympathize.

BTW, there is a cache hidden in the Truckhaven Hills near Salton Sea. I think someone hid it during the annual TDS Desert Safari (first weekend in March every year). We go every year and will continue to do so - it's only a 5 hour drive from our new home. 1200 or more vehicles attend and it's mostly Jeeps.

  5. I like to take pictures and one day I bought a sturdy monopod that had a hand strap. I use this now as a walking stick and then as a camera monopod when I get there! As I'm sure others have pointed out you can also use your choice of walking stick to poke around before reaching your hand into some dark place to pull out the cache box.

  6. I was looking for a cache in Riverside, CA with my family. We found it and sat on a nearby bench to read the log and all. I look up and down the trail is a pit bull headed straight for me full bore. I'm a dog lover but those things look scary and I just about had a heart attack. I grabbed my backpack and put it between me and it but it (she) came around the backpack and proceeded to lick my 6 year old. Whew! Everyone laughs at me about it now but what would YOU think if you saw a pit bull coming right at you. The owner was nearby and I guess this dog was friendly.

  7. I'd recommend going for a Pocket PC based PDA with a color screen. The HP Jornada 525's are running about $150 in decent used shape. They also take compact flash cards so you can add memory, modems, etc. Sure it only has a serial cable instead of usb but you can get a usb-serial converter and besides, use a compact flash reader/writer for quicker transfer of data anyway.

  8. I'm gonna weigh in here. We're AZ people and have hiked and driven Jeep trails, etc. and have also never come across ruins or any archaeological sites that we know of. If we did, we'd look but not touch because we're pretty responsible about things like that. But I resent these people being so extreme as to wanting to make it so no one can ever see any of these things in person, just in pictures. Great way to sell magazines and books I guess. Sure, idiot geocachers that leave trash and destroy things should be punished. But I can see these guys trying to pass laws about geocaching just like they're trying to keep Jeeps and other 4x4's from being able to drive anywhere but paved roads and highways. I think the majority of geocachers are good people who play by the rules. The majority of Jeep people we go out with also play by the rules.

So are lots of people really defacing ruins, leaving garbage and generally destroying places like this? I'm suspicious the environmentalists are at it again, trying to keep normal people from being able to see special places and making stuff up to bring attention to their cause. But maybe I'm wrong. Read the article - doesn't it seem like they don't want anyone visiting these places? I can understand not wanting people to be able to walk around inside the ruins but are we only supposed to be aloud to see pictures in magazines?
