  1. Here's one I came acrossed in the Arizona desert last weekend. I tried looking it up on the benchmarking site but there is no zip code for the area and the coordinate search doesn't seem to be working. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  2. Surely one of us can meet up with this fellow geocacher. April in Sedona is very nice and this year there should be plenty of wild flowers from all the rain we've had. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  3. Glad there are plenty of AZ caches out there. We've been caching for a year now and live in Chandler. So many of the caches we've found so far have introduced us to neat places we had previously not known about. Happy AZ geocaching! ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  4. Oh my gosh, that is so tragic. Very sorry to hear that. My condolences to his family and friends. I hope you don't stop geocaching as a result of this tradgedy though. I think you kind of honor your friend Mike when you continue on. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  5. Yikes, so that's what an ammo box looks like after an inferno. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  6. Wohoo, FINALLY cooling off to around 105 and drying out some. Nights are gonna start getting cold here in AZ. Going to have to start bringing the doors and some blankets with us in the Jeep. ...it's all relative. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  7. Actually my father-in-law found one on 395 up there. Must have fallen out of a boat or slide across the dash and out the window or something. Works fine. It has what appears to be start of the owners trip in AZ and we're going to track it back to that point shorlty to try and return it. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  8. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there are any earth-shattering changes coming to GPS technology real soon, except the marriage of GPS with cell phones and Pocket PC's (maybe). I wouldn't wait. Jump in, the water's warm! ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  9. Just moved back to AZ from SoCal or I'd join you too. Although I know there is at least one geocache over in Truckhaven that was put there during the hude annual TDS Desert Safari (1200+ 4x4 vehicles attend). Anyway, check out the "Southwest" forum here. There were a few SoCal people looking for 4x4 geocaching buddies over there. BTW, you can find info on the TDS Desert Safari here: http://www.tds4x4.com It's the first weekend in March every year. We'll be there. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------

  11. quote:Originally posted by GoingBald: You were very lucky the dog didn't hammer your child. Next time, pick that young'un up!!!! Most animals that are hungry just naturally attack the smaller and weaker looking prey, this could have been one of those times. I hope I'm never in that situation myself. I probably didn't make it clear but my son was behind me so in the short time I had to respond I decided to put the backpack in between *us* and the dog. The dog came to me first then quickly went around me and started licking everyone. Thinking back I'm not sure what else I could have done that different that would have helped other than bring something that could be used as a weapon. I think picking up my son would have only left me without hands to try and fight the dog with. Luckily it didn't come to that. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  12. There is a cool one near Universal Studios - I think it's called Big Brother. You're supposed to be able to see the set for Big Brother at the cache site. Meant to go there ourselves but didn't have time. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  13. Coolest: probably a city worker action figure Lamest: beat up used toys ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  14. Check out Have Bug Will Travel. Maybe you can pick up a traveller looking to go your way when you head on home. Plus it's close to the airport if you're flying. Cache Page ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  15. I sometimes won't log a "not found" because I plan on going back within a few days to try again. If I consistently can't find it I'll log a no find. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  16. I bet I met you then. I camped with the same bunch! I wasn't there much though. Wish I could get more Jeepaholics into this sport. It would be a fun extension of our other hobby. You hang out on the Jeepaholics site? I'm "whooven" over there. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  17. What's the best place to find GPS accessories/books/RAM mounts, etc. in Phoenix? ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  18. Aw man, I would love to but next weekend we're moving from the Riverside area back to Arizona (Phoenix area). Guess we'll have to look for some fellow Jeepers out there. Good luck! I can sympathize. BTW, there is a cache hidden in the Truckhaven Hills near Salton Sea. I think someone hid it during the annual TDS Desert Safari (first weekend in March every year). We go every year and will continue to do so - it's only a 5 hour drive from our new home. 1200 or more vehicles attend and it's mostly Jeeps. 19. I like to take pictures and one day I bought a sturdy monopod that had a hand strap. I use this now as a walking stick and then as a camera monopod when I get there! As I'm sure others have pointed out you can also use your choice of walking stick to poke around before reaching your hand into some dark place to pull out the cache box. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  20. I was looking for a cache in Riverside, CA with my family. We found it and sat on a nearby bench to read the log and all. I look up and down the trail is a pit bull headed straight for me full bore. I'm a dog lover but those things look scary and I just about had a heart attack. I grabbed my backpack and put it between me and it but it (she) came around the backpack and proceeded to lick my 6 year old. Whew! Everyone laughs at me about it now but what would YOU think if you saw a pit bull coming right at you. The owner was nearby and I guess this dog was friendly. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  21. I'd recommend going for a Pocket PC based PDA with a color screen. The HP Jornada 525's are running about $150 in decent used shape. They also take compact flash cards so you can add memory, modems, etc. Sure it only has a serial cable instead of usb but you can get a usb-serial converter and besides, use a compact flash reader/writer for quicker transfer of data anyway. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  22. I'm gonna weigh in here. We're AZ people and have hiked and driven Jeep trails, etc. and have also never come across ruins or any archaeological sites that we know of. If we did, we'd look but not touch because we're pretty responsible about things like that. But I resent these people being so extreme as to wanting to make it so no one can ever see any of these things in person, just in pictures. Great way to sell magazines and books I guess. Sure, idiot geocachers that leave trash and destroy things should be punished. But I can see these guys trying to pass laws about geocaching just like they're trying to keep Jeeps and other 4x4's from being able to drive anywhere but paved roads and highways. I think the majority of geocachers are good people who play by the rules. The majority of Jeep people we go out with also play by the rules. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  23. Whoops, should have checked there. I just figured it would be a regional discussion. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  24. Just posted at AZ Central: quote:High-tech scavenger hunt threatens archaeological sites Article Link This is the one of the official websites of the Arizona Republic. So are lots of people really defacing ruins, leaving garbage and generally destroying places like this? I'm suspicious the environmentalists are at it again, trying to keep normal people from being able to see special places and making stuff up to bring attention to their cause. But maybe I'm wrong. Read the article - doesn't it seem like they don't want anyone visiting these places? I can understand not wanting people to be able to walk around inside the ruins but are we only supposed to be aloud to see pictures in magazines? ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
  25. Wohoo! Is this still on? Are they still going to open up the lands again? I hope so. ----------- Bill Jeeps Only! http://www.jeepsonly.com ------------------------
