    Missing Bugs

quote:How many sites must a team visit before they aren't newbies any more? I have to agree with Leprecahuns. You've shown that you're not a newbie with your first cache find, seeing a need, and helping out the cache. I don't think most newbies would've done that the first time out. I don't think I would have done that the first time out. I was more surprised that I found the cache in the first place, thinking at the time, "is this some elaborate joke that someone is playing on me, and are they going to jump out of the bushes yelling GOTCHA! when I get close to where the cache is suppossedly hiding?" If more people could follow your example, we'd have less bugs lost. On another note, I finally decided to ressurect one of my lost travel bugs. I found something else that fit the theme of the bug and am ready to send it on its way in place of the original bug which got trashed along with the cache that it was in at the time. So I guess, I really only have one bug that's totally lost now. Webfoot Tromping through the underbrush looking for Ammo cans, Tupperware containers, & little round disks.
  4. quote:Originally posted by HearingTurtle:It goes beyond being a naked monkey. If someone finds this with his or her children & they ask what it is, you can say it is the monkey’s penis. However, kids don’t just have _one_ question… When they ask why would someone put a naked monkey in a cache? You could say for humor probably. Then they might ask Why is showing his penis funny? What would you say to that? I think your answer to the second question might be a little off. Why not say, "Monkeys in the wild don't wear clothes, so I guess neither does this one." Might they also interpret it as it's tail, being the innocent children that most kids are? Questions become moot at that point. Getting back to the original question, I have to agree with others, that it's not really appropriate for something like that to be in a cache, and if accepted by the bulk of cachers, then we have no one to blame but ourselves when someone else tries to push the envelope further. There is one cache that was placed by the NPS. I guess it's ok for them to place a cache, but not the rest of us? In reality, I understand what the NPS is doing by not allowing caches. I had http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=3037 wash away in a flood, along with the cache it was in. Gone, right? I started a "reincarnated" bug with the same number. 9. quote:Originally posted by FullOn:As far as get-togethers go, there is a picnic happening on March 22 in Irvine that is an entire Southern California regional event. In the IE, Uneakone and Happy1 hosted a picnic last year that was a lot of fun. Hopefully they'll decide to do it again as we have added so many new IE cachers. Just in the year and couple of months that I've been caching there has been a huge explosion of cachers out in the Riverside and Corona areas. Unfortunately, I'll be indisposed in the mountains north of Yucaipa on the 22nd. Orchestra retreat as a chaperone takes precedent. I won't even be able to get away and bag a cache out here either. I actually think the next time I'll be able to go caching is the weekend of the 29th. I know, I know. I need to get my priorities straighted. What can I say, I have other hobbies too. Find a place that's cool, green and shady. Personally, I think July would be the most pleasant. June, you'll have the possibility of June Gloom and it being overcast and cold. August is hotter overall than the other two months. I'm wondering if you're planning something like this though, you might need permits? Just thinking out the logistics of the entire thing. What if we scheduled a week-end conference with a swap meet,to sell or purchase used caching equipment and group caching for sometime this summer when the heat is on the inland empire and the air is cooler up in the moutaines? What's your thoughts on this. I think a summertime conference, either for a day, or for the entire weekend is a great idea. I don't have anything to sell at the moment, but you never know what might come up in the next three months. As long as it's in the summertime. My time is way too impacted right now to even think about anything like that. Webfoot Tromping through the underbrush looking for Ammo cans, Tupperware containers, & little round disks.
  14. quote:Originally posted by Dave_W6DPS: quote:You can just post a note to the cache. This doesn't count as a find but will allow you to pick up the little bugger. Just to clarify, you don't need to post a note to grab the bug. You just need the number stamped on it. You go to the "Track a Travel Bug" page, enter the number, and go from there. You do need to use note to put the bug in a cache you have previously found.... My two cents worth, refunds available on request. (US funds only) If you're dropping off more than one travel bug, you don't need to post separate notes for each bug. Just drop the first bug off when you log the cache or post the note, then go back and click the edit button on your post. It will allow you to drop off another bug at that time without doing anything else to the note or log. My son is less and less likely to go with me on the spur of the moment. I could have used the company and the encouragement on this cache I did today. This was a great hike because it really got my cardiovascular system a real workout. Needless to say, I'm tired now after an 8.2 mile round trip hike. I would also encourage other Inland Empire Cachers to attempt this one. Actually, if you haven't been to the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, you should. There are four caches along the trail loop in the park including the Potato Mountain one. I passed two of the others on the trip up and would have passed the fourth one if I had completed the loop, but lunch was calling. There's also an interesting benchmark there as well. I was going to try and document that as well, but as I stated above, my hunger pangs and the pains in my feet and legs told me to hold that benchmark for another day. 16. quote:Originally posted by camp637:We have just activated our second travel bug. After we entered a full description, we went back to upload photo. That seemed to go okay, but the actual photo does not appear with the description. Instead, the name of the image is listed at the bottom of the page, and you must click to view it. We did everything the same as for our first bug, and the pix for that one appears with the description. This second bug has a rather long description -- could that be the reason? Try going to your bug's page and clicking on the edit this item link at the top right. There should be a pull down menu where you can Select an image to be displayed for the Bug. See if that works. Life Thru Geocaching...Geocaching Thru Life http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/usa.gif Carivercpl, I've been doing this for about two years now. I'm more of a casual cacher, doing about two per month or so since I started back in March of 2001. The closest one to me at that time was Wilderness Park over in Claremont. Now, there's about three of them over in that park, plus the one I've hidden behind my house and a couple of others as well. What I'd like to see is a couple more mountain caches in the Lake Arrowhead/Running Springs area, or perhaps on the back side in the Wrightwood area. There was the Cajon Cache that I found almost two years ago, but it's been archived. That was a nice hike right along the PCT. I'd probably be more than just a casual cacher if I could find a regular caching buddy to go out and cache with. My son likes to cache, but he only wants to go about once a month. I may be able to persuade him to go more than once a month, but it's a rare month, especially during the fall/winter/spring time. During the summer, he seems more willing to go. Sorry, after looking back, this really became a ramble. Anyway, if anyone is interested in going caching this weekend, or on other weekends, let me know. I'm up for some more caching than I do right now. Webfoot Tromping through the underbrush looking for Ammo cans, Tupperware containers, & little round disks.

I downloaded the EasyGPS software and to create a map of my geocaching travels I would have to pay $67.00 for the map features. Not that it isn't worth it. I just can't afford it or justify the expence right now. I just got my new bunch of travel bugs yesterday. I created a personal bug and hooked it on to my keychain. I like when you view the map that you get an ongoing personal log of your successful geocaches. And, no, I didn't log any locationless caches on this one. Didn't think that would be the right thing to do with this bug. I only wanted to log the ones I'd actually physically been to. 22. quote:Originally posted by Agent Okie:Being a newbie to benchmarking, should I go to the benchmark reports and log them as missing or destroyed? What if I'm wrong? Should I state that I searched and did not find the marks, but the culverts appeared to have been replaced? Any ideas? Agent Okie, I have to agree with Jeff on this one. No firm evidence that it's destroyed, so a "not found" might be more appropriate. Keep it up though as you will find others eventually. I went out three times before I found this one. My first two times out, I couldn't find the marks, although I realize now where one of them is that I could not find. I just need to get back and document that one. Other two, I'm not sure are there. On the same trek where I found the one above, I did get to document this one as well. Good luck in your pursuit. He has a red plastic key chain attached with a note that reads on one side "To Nana and Papa", and "Mass. or Bust" on the other. The note is written on an index card that is folded and taped. I did a search for Dopey in the Travel bug section and came up with three different Dopeys. One was Dopey and Sneezy, so that probably rules that one out and the other two aren't stuffed cotton fabric, so was that the name or was he named something else? 25. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:They must have a minimum of 30 miles before they show miles travelled. Tommy TowTruck only has 26 miles on it and the mileage is showing. I think you need 30 miles for a map to show. Miles might not show because people are grabbing it before the person before logs it into a cache. That would cause the mileage not to show. That's happened to my Rusty Spike travel bug. It looks like he was picked up, dropped off at another cache, then picked up again before he got logged into the cache. So right now he has no credit for any mileage, even though he's probably been in a cache. Webfoot Tromping through the underbrush looking for Ammo cans, Tupperware containers, & little round disks.
