  1. PPC Mogul w/Built in GPS

    Cachamate

    Garmin Mobile XT

    Google Mobile Maps

One thing to keep in mind in your count for arguing about the larger user base and supporting Wherigo was mentioned earlier.I am not sure how much memory and processor is needed to run a Wherigo cartride is needed but if its a decent amount many of the palms people are using might not work. The reason palms seem to be far more prevelant in Paperless activities is the number of older palms which can be had for $30 or less of ebay or craigslist and I have heard many of these work great with cachemate but not for more complicated programs.

  2. Although I have not used the Treo 750 I have used the Treo 700wx as well as several others windows mobile devices and they work great for paperless caching.I would highly recommend getting cachemate for your Treo

there are several free options and ways to do paperless but the $8 for Cachemate is well worth in my opinion.

If you have unlimited Data make sure you bookmark wap.geocaching.com it can be quite useful when out in the field.I also like Google Mobile Maps which can give you maps as well as aerial views. This is most useful when used with a GPS attached to your phone but can be used without one, once again I would only recommend if you have unlimited data.Have fun and enjoy the phone if you get it.

  3. I too would like to add a vote for a direct url.I dont know what the screen scrapers are about but dont understand the difference how having a direct url to the main vs a direct link to the wap site would help or hurt them.If not like another user recently said a GPX download option. These would make it more useful to use with cachemate when you are in a new area or going after that FTF.

    Thanks

  4. I just found out today how to make cachemate with with Garmin Mobile XT on my phone. This integration is perfect and makes it really easy to Navigate to the cache. It seems like Cachemate is more complete to me as it does most things I could expect from a Paperless caching solution. Thanks for the Software Maegllin

  5. You have to options to do this one is sending them directly from Google maps.If you do a search and have waypoints on the google map you can click the send link in the upper right corner and select send to gps.It should be right above where it says Map/Sattelite /Terrain on the map.If there is more than one result you have to send them one by one to the gps.If you want to get multiple waypoint to your Garmin from google maps you can use a program call Gmaps to Gpx to create a gpx file and sned that to your GPS using Mapsource or whatever your preferred method is.This is really nice because it isnt really a program to install just a bookmark in your browser. You can find it here as well as instructions on how to use it.

  6. I am so glad you made this thread otherwise I may not have known about the throwdown. I have no doubts that my setup or one very similar will come out on top.I am gonna have to fine tune my setup a little since I havent been caching much lately but have no fears my paperless will come ready to crush. The only area of concern is the same with most of the paperless devices is durability.I know for sure it will take some good tumbles as it has the scars to prove it but no where near what my handheld could survive.

oh and your post on the GW forum

"If you are not sure whether your "paperless solution" might compete well, then post a note here and we'll figure it out."

Good try to try and size up the competition but youll have to wait and see :P

  7. Just a quick question on this: If you put it on the GPS, in my case a Garmin Vista HCx, can it be removed later on for whatever reason; space limitations, bugs, etc. or would you need to do a hard reset of the device.

Every time you reload maps onto your unit the old ones are written over with the new mapset you put on the gps.In your case if you want to completely erase them all you can either put the card in a card reader and format it or access the card through the gps as a usb drive.

  8. Actually Windows Live Search has mapping features similar to google maps.I have never been able to get live search to accept coords but you can do it with Google mobile maps.Go to www.google.com/gmm/ on your tilts browser andthis will let you download goggle maps. Then just just do a search for the coords you are looking for and It will put on arrow on the map. When I search I use format like n37 14.400 w121 48.600 and it works great. One other nice trick I used a while back was to use google earth to pull up several caches I wanted to search for then create a KML file.Host this file somewhere and then if you enter the url of the kml file in the gMM search it will bring up the placemarks of those caches for you without having to hand enter all the coords.

  9. I have not seen any solution for topo 2008 map, although you can find on the web someone wrote a tool to redefine the old topo 3.02 map tile to fit within 2025 segment.

For topo 2008, there are two issues to address to fit the entire topo on one chip:

    1. need a tool to merge map tiles, from 6633 down to less than 2025.

    2. make the whole map image less than 2GB (required by many handheld GPS). Perhaps use NT-map-like-compression, but then this may not work for some old GPS which does not support decompression.

Some device like vista hcx, appear to be able to load image with segments more than 2025, but actually not, as the first time map scanning process silently abort before reaching 100%, leaving part of the map unrecognized.

I using 2 microsd (damned cheap these days), or leave the other region .img copy on my laptop, so I can easily use the SD card reader to swap map set (instead of building the mapset each time).

The tool has been discussed here for the 3.02 Topo as you disussed and yes I realize the size to fit the whole us would be too much but if the tiles were bigger I could load well over half the continental us w/o running into the segment limit

  10. Hey Saacnmama,

I got your email so I came to check the post.I haven't used any of verizons offerings but from wha i know about VZNavigator is it would really only be useful for driving directions.Unless he has one of the newer pdaphones with gps capabilities I don't think the solution would work very well.Do you happen to know what phone it is? If you can find a cheap hanheld it might be the better way since i dont think many uilt in phone gps chips are going to do any better in hills or trees than even a basic handheld unit

  11. So far you are off to a good start.I have used ppc based caching systems for quite a while.I dont use BGN because it seemed to take forever to load the maps I needed and I already had other mapping programs. You do know CM will route you to the cache with an arrow and distance like found on many handheld gps so unless you need the topo maps this could cut one program out of the equation.I like express logger for logging the caches but I use gsak to store a huge database on my computer and usually use it to filter the caches before I send the gpx to my ppc.

My current setup when I am not using my 60csx is

-HTC Mogul with built in GPS

    -Cachmate 1.3

-Garmin Mobile XT With CityNav and Topo2008 maps

-Using Pocket IE I can access the internet and download GPX files on the go for when I am trying to get a FTF or to find caches I may not have loaded when I am out of my home area

-Google maps mobile so if I have cell coverage I can always pull up high resolution areials of where I am at

  12. I have the Freedom GPS unit and loved it when I didn't have a phone with built in GPS.The fact that it attached to my keys made it great since I never go anywhere without my keys I never had to worry about not having the unit with me.Signal acquisition is on par with any of the newer devices in that it can obtian fast satellite lock and also have a lock in some indoor locations as well.It works well with Googlemaps,Live Search,Mapopolis and Cachemate.I still have it on my keyring even though my new phone has a built in GPS.

  13. I love my 700WX.I would make sure you get unlimited data as it will be the most useful that way.You can log onto geocaching and get full functionality.I get great download speeds on mine. You can use cachemate on it and if you have a bluetooth gps(700wx doesnt have built in)it will give you the compass screen with direction and distance to the cache.I have found quite a few caches with mine since I always have it with me but not always my Garmin so its great for when you have some unexpected time to kill or if you like going after FTF's like me.

I also use Google mobile maps or also live search which I have been using a lot more lately due to more features I like than Google. Both will show you location on the map in high res aerial photos which is nice for some caches. If you have any questions feel free to ask
