  1. I can't believe that in that time no one has brought along an extra log and a baggie with them. If I am out for a day of caching most of the time I bring a few extra goodies including a spare logs and mini baggies. If I see that a cache needs an extra or dry log I replace it and let the owner know.

  2. If you can't correctly answer the question then it is a no find. During my summer vacation I can recall two virtuals in which I visited and emailed what I thought was the correct answers. One in Sleepy Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the other outside of the White House. I received an email that my answers where not correct so no smiley for me.

  3. I bought a used Palm m125 from ebay for around $20. It has worked great and I don't know how I cached before it. Unless you plan to use your Palm for work I would not get an expensive one. Too much can happen to it while caching to get an expensive one. One feature that is nice is a SD slot. That way you can load as many chaches onto your Palm as you would like. I have thousands of caches on mine with a 128 card in it. I believe that my internal memory is only 8MB. Good luck.

  4. I enjoy finding all types of caches. I love running around in the woods looking for ammo cans. It is also nice to find a few micros while running around town or doing errends. I would do a lot less caching if I only hunted regular caches in the woods. If you don't want to find micros don't look for them! It is idiotic to say that just because you don't like them that no one should be able to find them. What are you, a geonazi?

  5. You cannot store the caches onto your memory card. When you load caches you are using the internal 1000 waypoint memory. You can however store many thousands of caches on your memory card by storing them as Points of Interest (POI's). You will need to download POI loader from Garmin.com. There are many threads there about how to do this. Below is one thread.

When you use geocaches as POI's though it does change how you use them. They do not function like traditional geocaches. Read up about doing this. The clear advantage to loading your geocaches as POI's is the million's of caches you could potentially load onto your receiver. Good luck.

  6. After Garmin changed the number of unlock codes available to us it has become a difficult choice. If you get a preloaded card you can switch the card between any Garmin units with an mini SD slot but have no backup if you loose or damage the card. If you buy the maps on DVD you can load the maps onto your computer to view and manage your trips but can only unlock the maps to one particular GPS reciever. If you damage that receiver or get a new one you are out of luck. A tough choice to make. If you want to use the maps between two units go with the preloaded card. I am in the middle of making that decision myself.

  7. I have a problem using GSAK 6.6.4 and Cachemate 4.1.2. I download my PQ's into GSAK and then export them to my Palm using Cachemate. Everything works as it should except for one thing. When I view the cache logs in cachemate, review notes do not appear in the logs. This is a problem when a cache has been archived and I do not know it because the archive log does not appear in Cachemate. The last log that appears in cachemate is the last found it or DNF log. The later review logs do not appear. I'm sure that this is a setting thing or a box that I have not checked but I cannot find it. I'm tired for looking for caches that are not there. Help!

  8. Some of my most memorable finds are ones that I really had to work for. Many caches I had to go back several times to find. Although I love finding all caches, it does get a bit repetitive to drive up to light pole skirt lifters. It is interesting and unique caches that makes me love our recreation. There are pleantly of easy caches around. Please place a cache that people have to work for.

  9. Stop urban micros.

Never quite understood why people have such a hatred for one type of cache or another. They are all good to me. If you don't like urban micros, fine. Don't look for them. I equally love tromping through the woods to find a regular cache or being able to grab a few urban micro caches while running errends or visiting a new city. Better yet are urban regular caches that are hidden in a clever way. Find the caches you want. It's all good.

  10. There is a GPS for Dummies book as well as a book offered on amazon called A GPS User Manual: Working With Garmin Receivers. I would not recommend these though because of the changing nature of GPS receivers and software. When I first purchaced my GPS receiver I also bought an instructional DVD. To be honest it was a waste of money showing me only basics which I could have figured out myself. I think your better bet is to read these forums and post questions and get instant answers. Beside have the fun of these toys is playing with them. Good luck.

  11. Just wanted to let everyone know that I emailed Shieldzone with the same problem. After two emails here is the responce that I received today. I will let you know the results once I get the screen. After the last posts I do not hold out a lot of hope that it will be totally correct. We will see.

  12. Many of us who have recently purchaced new Garmin units have been waiting to see when the 2008 update would be shipping with the full version of City Navigator NT v8 DVD. In months past you had to buy the update seperately. Lately there have been posts here and there stating that retailers are now shipping the full updated 2008 version. If this is true I imagine that it will take awhile for retailers to get rid of their old v8 stock and then will ship the v8-2008 stock. There also have been various reports of Garmin's willingness to upgrade old v8 data for new purchaces. My question for anyone who has recently purchaced this product is where did you order from and did you receive the updated v8-2008? Also here are the latest prices that I have found including shipping to my area.

  13. This is the best article that I have found about paperless caching. It has step by step graphics to walk you through the process.

It seems that most people use GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) to organize all your cache data and Pocket Q's and Cachemate to work with the file on your Palm or Pocket PC. With this set up you only have to download the Pocket Querry once into GSAK. From there you can send the info to your Palm by simply choosing File - Export - CacheMate PDB file. And then you are ready to hot sync with your Palm! It's just that easy.

  14. Although it may be possible I have not heard of any way to load the SD card map info onto your computer. Most people go with the DVD version for a few reasons. First, as you mentioned, is the ability to store and use the map info onto your computer. Second is the fact that loading the DVD info onto your own miniSD card allows you to keep other info on the card such as additional POI's. The one big advantage to a preloaded SD card is that you can load it onto what ever GPS receiver that you want to. The newer versions of City Navigator NT may only be unlocked to one particular unit. That is to say if you get a new GPS unit you also have to buy a new copy of City Navigator (or purchace another unlock code for the same amount of money). With so many online resources you should not feel like you have to only buy from your local store. In most cases you can find it cheaper online anyway. The NT simply stands for "new technology". As you said it is just a different way to compress the information. I have heard that it was originally developed for the car set GPS models. On certain models of Garmin GPS receivers use the NT version so make sure yours is the right one. The NT has nothing to do with Windows NT. Good luck.

  15. Same with me. I purchaced a Vista Cx screen for my new Vista Hcx. Sheildzone does not carry a specific Hcx screen. As stated the screen protector is just a millimeter to big. Because the screen is slightly recessed in the housing the extra bit curls and does not fit correct. I will be contacting the company but will also try to use a razor to cut the excess off of one edge.
