  1. There's much for me to learn, like... How do I convert my waypoints to POI and put them on my card? And thanks for the reply.
  2. I use a GPSmap 76CSx. My 128 mb SanDisk is evidently maxed out. ( I get the "waypoint memory full" message.) I'm thinking of getting a 1 or 2-gigabyte card, but I thought I remember hearing or reading that the unit can't handle cards that "large". So, experienced users, what's the largest card I can use? Or should I use smaller cards and label them by region? All suggestions gladly accepted.
  3. We live in Wyoming, where there is a lot of public land with a lot of old dried cow pies. (From old dried cows of course.) Think a fake would make a great hide. (Call it a cowhide?...never mind.) We would appreciate any tried-and-true recipies and/or pictures.
  4. Thanks for the replies. I'll log them by date found, with explanation.
  5. Due to a combination of spotty wireless and forgetfulness, we have failed to log several 4-6 week-old finds from our last foray. Read somewhere that logging now with old dates would create confusion. Should we log them with today's date? Or not log them them at all? No FTF's or travel bugs are involved, and each cache log was signed at the site. What to do??
  6. I've about had it with Garmin's antiquated MapSource topos, and I'm thinking that my next GPSr should be one which will have access to better--or at least more current--maps. Any ideas?
  7. I just downloaded a pocket query (gpx), unzipped it into GSAK, exported it to Cachemate, and synched it into my Palm. All data, hints, descriptions, etc are fine, with one exception: All "past logs" are in 2005, the most recent being 12/31/05. This happens every time, and I don't have any idea where the problem lies, or what to do about it. Any ideas??
  8. Thanx. I think that's just what I needed to get things going.
  9. When I download from GC to GSAK (online),and then to Cachemate to Palm Pilot while off line (just before going out), I get waypoints, distances, etc.---but no logs, hints, or discussion. I presently solve the problem, when I'm able to get online, by selecting a previously downloaded cache in GSAK then downloading the exchange file. This not only requires many mouse clicks, but involves rather lengthy loading of each site individually. There must be a more efficient way of getting the full information package for 50 or so on to my Palm. I'm kinda new at this, and not a real techy, so I'm always looking for an easier way. Help??
  10. Years ago I went online and downloaded a "translator" to allow me to view 1:24000 USGS topo quadrangles in digital raster graphics (DRG's) I could move my cursor to an interesting spot (shore of a mountain lake) click the cursor and record the waypoint. Or I could type in a waypoint and it would show up on the map. The maps would meld together seamlessly, and it was all great fun for planning or seeing where you had been. The system was being upgraded constantly. I think I could even download waypoints to my Eagle expedition. Oh...and it was all free! So, now that I'm a newbie geocacher...Anything like that today?
  11. I can't figure out what a pocket query is, but it seems like they're kinda important. Could someone give me an explanation and how-to? Or maybe just a link to a thread that has already dealt with it?
  12. Hey---it worked! I've done it both with the routes method and the map method. Thanks much for the help.
  13. There's something I'm not getting. I can't find a pull-down menu on the map page of my Legend. When I push the thumb stick in I get a menu that includes "distance", but I can't select it. More help??
  14. How do I find the distance and bearing between two waypoints when I'm not at either of them? I used this feature often with my old Eagle Expedition, but can't figure out how to do it with my new Legend.
  15. Well that was easy. Thanx 4 the help.
  16. Found my first cache 12/31/05. Logged and submitted it on the form that came up after I ticked the button on upper right of the cache details page. I haven't seen the log since. Where do I look? Or do I need to log my experience somewhere else? Aren't newbies fun?
  17. Okay, I'm hooked. This is fun. Went on a good drive, found a steaming well, and was steered to a great rock formation like a maze. Uncovered the cache. Woohoo.
  18. Scratch the GO2--finally realized it doesn't have PC connectivity. Would still like suggestions, though.
  19. Want to get started geocaching, and my old Eagle expedition cratered. I want to hold off on the big purchase until the new generation of chips (SIRF III?) are available. What do you pros think about the Lowrance IFinder GO2 for starters? Other suggestions?
  20. After reading lots of comments on this forum, I've about decided that one "necessity'' for my next gps is expandable memory. Does Garmin make an expandable handheld? If not (and I haven't heard of one yet), maybe I should be doing some rethinking. Doesn't seem smart to write off a whole major company on the basis of one criterion. Appreciate any comments or suggestions.
  21. The "New Poll" option is not available, so: In your experienced opinion, and assuming cost is not a consideration, what gps receiver+software+accessories package would you choose for geocaching? And why? (This is actually a serious question.)
  22. I like my old Lowrance Eagle for hunting and fishing, but it has some faults that render it kinda obsolete. Can it be upgraded via the internet? I have yet to go on my first little gc expedition, but will try to get out tomorrow. How soon will I feel the absolute need for a new unit?
