  1. I am hooked on my Magellan Meridian Platinum. True, I am not a newbie, but months ago when I was, I made the newbie mistake and bought a yellow eTrex. BAD IDEA, imho. The mapping features that units like the Meridian Platinum have are crucial. For me, being able to see where I am on a map is so much cooler and more useful than just seeing my coordinates. True, you can get the yellow eTrex for $99, but why waste that money when you're gonna want a better one soon anyway? Check out TigerGPS.com, you can get a great Magellan Sportrak Map unit for only $170!
  2. From my experiences, the sportrak is the way to go. It's a brand new product line, whereas the eTrex has been around for a while, so the technology is much newer overall. What people are saying about reception is definitely true: the antenna on the Sportrak is MUCH better! Don't think of the antenna as just one of many components on the GPS: if you can't get reception out in the woods on your eTrex, what good is it at all? The antenna is crucial! Also, pricewise, check out Tigergps.com, they have the Sportrak Pro for only $233 with a $50 rebate on top of that. Definitely cheaper than the eTrex!!
  3. The compass on my Meridian Platinum simply refused to work, no idea why. I called Magellan and they said it was defective, so I returned it to the store where I bought it. Those guys handled it perfectly, they sent me a replacement at their expense the same day, had my new one the same day I sent the bad one back, and it worked perfectly!! Couldn't ask for better service. Check em out, tigergps.com, I highly recommend.
  4. Not to beat this to death, but I definitely recommend the Meridian! My Platinum is outstanding, and the yellow eTrex I had before it can't even compare. Also would like to recommend Tiger GPS where I bought mine, they are very courteous and helpful, and amazing prices! One stop there and half of my Christmas shopping is already done
  5. I had a yellow eTrex last year and was not really into it at all. Seeing my coordinates wasn't so special, but once I got myself a nice Sportrak Pro and some Mapsend Streets & Destinations, I was totally hooked. If you look, you can get pretty good prices right now - you don't have to spend that much on Mapping over regular. Check out TigerGPS.com, they have a Sportrak map for only $170 I think, and if you get the software too there's a $50 rebate. FAST shipping too, highly recommend.
  6. I have a 13-year old son and when I got him a basic eTrex last year he used it once. Something about a bunch of coordinates didn't really do it for him. If you really want to get a great present, I recommend a Magellan Sportrak Map so he can actually see where he is on a Map! I think TigerGPS.com has em for about $170. There's a $50 rebate too, so if you buy software and 2 units that's not so bad....
  7. Bought mine at TigerGPS.com, they have amazing prices and will ship same day even when you order late in the day. Also I noticed someone mentioned harmony computers? They rip you off on the software! Check out this site, they're great.
  8. I just picked up a Magellan companion - they have a $100 rebate going on so it's only $65 in the end, not bad. I must recommendTigerGPS.com, I ordered at 3pm and they emailed me twice and shipped my order the same day. Thats also where I got that price. Works great for me!
