  1. I would guess the difference between Google and GC is that Google probably has many different paths to get you where you want to go and GC probably has very limited paths and therefore can't re-direct you. Google servers come down like everyone elses but because they can re-direct you it isn't obvious to you.
  2. Hey mushroom420, I live in the area and while I haven't gotten down to your cache yet you sure have given me a lot more info on your cache then I probably should know. Might want to think about that in the future. Having said that I applaud your effort to make more interesting caches. I love that. I am doing the same thing as I have noticed in this area there are certain types of caches I haven't seen so I am working on making those. It will be great to have more of those kind of caches in the area.
  3. And remember just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.
  4. I have found the best time to do an urban high muggle area search is during a snowstorm or rainstorm. Not many muggles out and those that are just want to get where they are going and could care less what you are doing.
  5. more to the point, what is the premium membership actually paying for at the moment? all we've had recently is features removed and replaced with inferior solutions. here's an idea, let premium members have access to google maps, and non-premium members can have access to the poor-mans maps. My problem is that it isn't showing all of the caches that I have found with a smiley face. I do wonder about that for a long time. my membership is due soon and right now I feel my 30 bucks is paying for Groudspeak's wonderful benefit plans for their workers and high rent (Seattle) instead of the services I really paying for. Yup, got a point there judge! +4
  6. For me I would like to see it with a ? mark and not say the container is small. It will be more challenging. You could come up with a hint that would be useful without giving it away. I like your idea tho.
  7. You can also go to your pocket queries page and find where it says: "Pocket Queries Ready for Download". Double click on the one you want it will give you the option of saving it on your computer plus some other options.
  8. I have a Garmin etrex Legend HCx. When I use GSAK to send the waypoints to my Garmin does it replace what is already on the Garmin with what is being sent? I am asking as I live in Wisconsin and will be spending Christmas week in Orlando and would like to temporarily remove the geocaches I have for Wisconsin so I can put Orlando caches on my Garmin.
  9. I now understand that partial cache name searches must be at least 4 characters. Would you consider allowing 3 character name searches? My example in another topic was WSQ which is used at the beginning of most Wisconsin cemetary caches. I would like to get a list of them as I hope to visit all of them. Thought I would ask.
  10. I have tried to do partial cache name searches and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. For example if I enter WSQ which is the beginning of most all cemetary caches in Wisconsin I get nothing. If I enter Big 10 I get them all. Is there any reason why it doesn't work consistently?
  11. I just received my GPs and thru GSAK I uploaded a pocket query of caches. However when I look at my caches there are only 50. Surely I should have more than that on the GPs correct? If so how do I increase that number?
  12. I am a novice as well and looking for a GPS to begin with. I noticed that Cabela has a "Garmin® etrex Legend HCx Handheld GPS Unit" on sale for $129.99 and was wondering if this is a good one to start with. What are the negatives with this model? I don't know much about GPS devices. That's the unit I use and it works great for caching. It's a good starter unit, rugged and accurate and has a micro SD card slot (card not included) so you can add maps to it. The base maps that come installed on the unit are VERY basic (includes only major highways and bodies of water), so if you think you'll be wanting to add more detailed topographical maps the SD card slot is important. Topo maps can be purchased from Garmin (pricey) or downloaded for free (legally) from sites like gpsfiledepot.com. The features I'm starting to wish I had are paperless caching and an electronic compass. You can download caches directly to the unit via USB cable from your computer but the GPSr will only include the cache name, GC code number, and coordinates. This is enough to navigate to the cache but you won't have cache descriptions, hints, recent logs and all that stuff. The new Etrex line and some of the middle and high end units will hold all this info for you so you don't have to tote the printed cache info in the field with you. An electronic compass is another feature I'll look for in my next unit. The Legend has a compass mode but you have to be moving for it to calculate direction based on your location (just a few steps at normal walking speed will do it) A three-axis electronic compass will point in the right direction even if you're standing still. It's not a huge deal but it would be nice. Thanks I just ordered it. My guess is I will want a better one later but want to be able to get more caches and not do it using maps only.
